OBJECTIVES: Noninvasive models have been established for the assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B(CHB). However, the predictive performance of these established models remains inconclusive. We aimed to develop a novel predictive model for liver fibrosis in CHB based on routinely clinical parameters. RESULTS: Platelets(PLT), the standard deviation of red blood cell distribution width(RDW-SD), alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and globulin were independent predictors of significant fibrosis by multivariable analysis...

Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is not a uniform bone disease; it is a heterogeneous group of metabolic bone diseases due to chronic kidney disease (CKD). The traditional term of ROD does not accurately include the wide spectrum of "CKD-mineral and bone disorder" (CKD-MBD) and has been restricted to define the several specific histologic disturbances of bone disease associated with CKD. Circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH) and total alkaline phosphatase levels do not always reflect bone turnover in CKD-MBD, whereas bone biopsy provides precise information regarding bone pathology...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There are no reports from Saudi Arabia documenting the picture of osteopathy in celiac disease (CD) and the adherence of physicians to the guidelines and recommendations to screen for bone disease. We conducted this study to document the prevalence of CD-related osteopathy and the Saudi physicians' adherence to the screening recommendations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified the biopsy proven CD cases diagnosed between 2003 and 2012. In addition to demographic data, we collected laboratory (serum calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, 25-dihydroxy vitamin D, and parathyroid hormone levels) and imaging [Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA)] data...

A key element to understand developmental and reproductive processes like germline development, double fertilization, and embryogenesis is the study of cell-specific gene expression patterns which is best analyzed by RNA in situ hybridization. Different visualization techniques have been established to mark either the region of mRNA production (using the classical chromogenic detection system) or the specific localization of mRNAs (using fluorescent labeled probes). In this chapter, we describe and compare whole mount RNA in situ hybridization techniques on ovules and young developing seeds from Arabidopsis thaliana using three different detection systems...

Cell walls are not only a protective barrier surrounding protoplasts but serve as signaling platform between the extracellular environment and the intracellular physiology. Ions of heavy metals and trace elements, summarized to metal ions, bind to cell wall components, trigger their modification and provoke growth responses. To examine if metal ions trigger cell wall sensing receptor like kinases (RLKs) of the Catharanthus roseus RLK1-like (CrRLK1L) family we employed a molecular genetic approach. Quantitative transcription analyses show that HERCULES1 (HERK1), THESEUS1 (THE1), and FERONIA (FER) were differently regulated by cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb)...

High levels of ammonia (NH3) have been suggested to elevate ambient particle pH levels to near neutral acidity (pH = 7), a condition that promotes rapid SO2 oxidation by NO2 to form aerosol sulfate concentration consistent with "London fog" levels. This postulation is tested using aerosol data from representative sites around the world to conduct a thorough thermodynamic analysis of aerosol pH and its sensitivity to NH3 levels. We find that particle pH, regardless of ammonia levels, is always acidic even for the unusually high NH3 levels found in Beijing (pH = 4...

Persulfate (peroxydisulfate, S2O8(2-)) is the newest oxidant used for the in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remediation of soil and groundwater. The present study investigated impacts of solution pH, temperature, and persulfate concentration on the reaction rate constant (k1), activation energy (Ea), and reaction order of the heat-activated persulfate process. Phenol was chosen as the model organic contaminant. As temperature increased from 30 °C to 70 °C, k1 exhibited a significant increase from 0.003 h(-1)∼0...

Graphene was successfully employed as a catalyst for the activation of sodium persulfate, towards the effective degradation of propylparaben, an emerging micro-pollutant, representative of the parabens family. A novel process is proposed which utilizes a commercial graphene nano-powder as the catalyst and sodium persulfate as the oxidizing agent. It was found that over 95% of micro-pollutant degradation occurs within 15 min of reaction time. The effects of catalyst loading (75 mg/L to 1 g/L), sodium persulfate (SPS) concentration (10 mg/L to 1 g/L), initial solution pH (3-9) and initial paraben concentration (0...

To develop an ultra-efficient and reusable heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst at a wide working pH range is a great challenge for its application in practical water treatment. We report an oxygen vacancy promoted heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction mechanism and an unprecedented ofloxacin (OFX) degradation efficiency of Cu doped Fe3O4@FeOOH magnetic nanocomposite. Without the aid of external energy, OFX was always completely removed within 30 min at pH 3.2-9.0. Compared with Fe3O4@FeOOH, the pseudo-first-order reaction constant was enhanced by 10 times due to Cu substitution (9...

Mutations of the human ATP6V1B1 gene cause distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA; OMIM #267300) often associated with sensorineural hearing impairment; however, mice with a knockout mutation of Atp6v1b1 were reported to exhibit a compensated acidosis and normal hearing. We discovered a new spontaneous mutation (vortex, symbol vtx) of Atp6v1b1 in an MRL/MpJ (MRL) colony of mice. In contrast to the reported phenotype of the knockout mouse, which was developed on a primarily C57BL/6 (B6) strain background, MRL-Atp6v1b1vtx/vtx mutant mice exhibit profound hearing impairment, which is associated with enlarged endolymphatic compartments of the inner ear...

Vermelha Lagoon is a hypersaline shallow transitional ecosystem in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). This lagoon is located in the protected area of Massambaba, between the cities of Araruama and Saquarema (Brazil), and displays two quite uncommon particularities: it exhibits carbonate sedimentation and displays the development of Holocene stromatolites. Due to both particularities, the salt industry and property speculation have been, increasingly, generating anthropic pressures on this ecosystem. This study aims to apply a multiproxy approach to evaluate the trophic state of Vermelha Lagoon based on physicochemical parameters and geochemical data for the quantification and qualification of organic matter (OM), namely total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), total phosphorus (TP) and biopolymeric carbon (BPC), including carbohydrates (CHO), lipids (LIP) and proteins (PTN)...

Herein we report the synthesis and crystal structures of three light alkali metal salts of the dianion of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 5,6:11,12-di-o-phenylenetetracene (LDOPT). The compounds are obtained by reaction of LDOPT with an excess of lithium or sodium metal in different O-donor solvents (DME, diglyme) and crystallize as naked, solvated-cation separated dianions exhibiting no interaction between the alkali metal ion and the aromatic π-system of LDOPT. Depending on the aprotic etheral solvent and the hardness of the alkaline metal agent a significant structural perturbation of the conjugated carbon framework of LDOPT is observed resulting in a bowl shaped curvature of the anionic π-perimeter, in contrast to its fully planar neutral state...

We present a spectroelectrochemical setup, in which Raman microscopy is combined with scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in order to provide both spectroscopic and electrochemical information of the very same location of an electrode at the same time. The setup is applied to a subject of high academic and practical interest, namely the oxygen evolution reaction at Ni and Ni/Fe electrodes. It comprises a transparent substrate electrode, onto which Ni and Ni/Fe thin films are deposited. An ultramicroelectrode (UME) is placed closely above the substrate to obtain electrochemical information, while a Raman microscope probes the same sample spot from below...

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours are a heterogeneous set of bone and soft tissue neoplasms that can cause a number of paraneoplastic syndromes such as tumour induced osteomalacia. The term phosphaturic comes from the common finding that these tumours secrete high levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 which causes renal phosphate wasting leading to hypophosphatemia. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumours are rare and diagnosis is difficult. A very active 68 year old male presented with bone pain and muscle weakness...
