Alpha-ribazole (α-R) is a unique riboside found in the nucleotide loop of coenzyme B12 (CoB12 ). α-R is not an intermediate of the de novo biosynthetic pathway of coenzyme B12 , but some bacteria of the phylum Firmicutes have evolved a two-protein system (transporter, kinase) that scavenges α-R from the environment and converts it to the pathway intermediate α-RP. Since α-R is not commercially available, one must either synthesize α-R, or isolate it from hydrolysates of vitamin B12 (cyano-B12 , CNB12 ), so the function of the above-mentioned proteins can be studied...

Polyetheretherketone is attractive for dental and orthopedic applications due to its mechanical attributes close to that of human bone; however, the lack of antibacterial capability and bioactivity of polyetheretherketone has substantially impeded its clinical applications. Here, a dual therapy implant coating is developed on the 3D micro-/nanoporous sulfonated polyetheretherketone via layer-by-layer self-assembly of Ag ions and Zn ions. Material characterization studies have indicated that nanoparticles consisting of elemental Ag and ZnO are uniformly incorporated on the porous sulfonated polyetheretherketone surface...

Rational design of complex metal-organic framework (MOF) hybrid precursors offers a great opportunity to construct various functional nanostructures. Here, a novel MOF-hybrid-assisted strategy to synthesize Co3 O4 /Co-Fe oxide double-shelled nanoboxes is reported. In the first step, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67, a Co-based MOF)/Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) yolk-shell nanocubes are formed via a facile anion-exchange reaction between ZIF-67 nanocube precursors and [Fe(CN)6 ]3- ions at room temperature...

The vast majority of the reported hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts perform poorly under alkaline conditions due to the sluggish water dissociation kinetics. Herein, a hybridization catalyst construction concept is presented to dramatically enhance the alkaline HER activities of catalysts based on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) (MoS2 and WS2 ). A series of ultrathin 2D-hybrids are synthesized via facile controllable growth of 3d metal (Ni, Co, Fe, Mn) hydroxides on the monolayer 2D-TMD nanosheets...

Scabies and pediculosis are common parasitic infestations of the skin and hair, manifesting with intense pruritus and effectively treated with modern medications. Because of the attached social stigma linking it with poverty and poor hygiene, patients will often attempt alternative folk-based remedies before confiding in their physicians. We conducted a comprehensive bibliographical study of historic folk literature and interviewed 70 individuals experienced in everyday application of folk medicine in order to categorize available remedies and provide a modern, scientific comment on their effectiveness and dangers...

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are present in a variety of tissues and can be differentiated into numerous cell types, including osteoblasts. Among the dental sources of MSCs, the periosteum is an easily accessible tissue, which has been identified to contain MSCs in the cambium layer. However, this source has not yet been widely studied. Vitamin D3 and 1,25-(OH)2D3 have been demonstrated to stimulate in vitro differentiation of MSCs into osteoblasts. In addition, vitamin C facilitates collagen formation and bone cell growth...

As a vital enzyme, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has great clinical significance in diagnoses of bone or liver cancer, bone metastases, rickets, and extrahepatic biliary obstruction. However, there is still no really portable chip for the ALP assay in blood. Herein, a simple electrophoresis titration (ET) model was developed for ALP detection via a moving reaction boundary (MRB). In the model, ALP catalyzed the dephosphorylation of a 4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate disodium salt (4-MUP) substrate in the cathode well to 4-methylumbelliferone ([4-MU]-) with a negative charge and blue fluorescence under UV excitation...

Most photoanodes commonly applied in solar fuel research (e.g., of Fe2 O3 , BiVO4 , TiO2 , or WO3 ) are only active and stable in alkaline electrolytes. Silicon (Si)-based photocathodes on the other hand are mainly studied under acidic conditions due to their instability in alkaline electrolytes. Here, we show that the in-diffusion of nickel into a 3D Si structure, upon thermal annealing, yields a thin (sub-100 nm), defect-free nickel silicide (NiSi) layer. This has allowed us to design and fabricate a Si microwire photocathode with a NiSi interlayer between the catalyst and the Si microwires...

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have recently emerged as a new class of pre-catalysts that can efficiently catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, how the OER activity of TMPs varies with the catalyst composition has not been systematically explored. Here, we report the alkaline OER electrolysis of a series of nanoparticulate phosphides containing different equimolar metal (M = Fe, Co, Ni) components. Notable trends in OER activity are observed, following the order of FeP < NiP < CoP < FeNiP < FeCoP < CoNiP < FeCoNiP, which indicate that the introduction of a secondary metal(s) to a mono-metallic TMP substantially boosts the OER performance...

Cyanidiophytina are a group of polyextremophilic red algae with a worldwide, but discontinuous colonization. They are restricted to widely dispersed hot springs, geothermal habitats, and also some human-altered environments. Cyanidiophytina are predominant where pH is prohibitive for the majority of eukaryotes (pH 0.5-3). Turkey is characterized by areas rich in volcanic activity separated by non-volcanic areas. Here we show that Cyanidiophycean populations are present in thermal baths located around Turkey on neutral/alkaline soils...

In the recent decades, flavonoid metal complexes have been widely investigated for their multifaceted role in enabling osteoblast differentiation and bone formation. Silibinin complexed with copper(II) ion has been synthesized along with two mixed ligand complexes, namely copper(II) silibinin-phenanthroline and neocuproine as co-ligands, and their positive role in promoting neovacularization and osteoblast differentiation was investigated. Silibinin mono complex [Cu(sil)(H2 O)2 ] and [Cu(sil)(phen)] showed similar UV-visible absorption in the region of 315 and 222 nm, whereas Cu(silibinin)(neocuproine) [Cu(sil)(neo)] showed a blueshift in the 320 nm transition...

This work examines the use of mild heat treatments in conjunction with 2-pass microfluidization to generate cheese milk for potential use in soft cheeses, such as Queso Fresco. Raw, thermized, and high temperature, short time pasteurized milk samples, standardized to the 3% (wt/wt) fat content used in cheesemaking, were processed at 4 inlet temperature and pressure conditions: 42°C/75 MPa, 42°C/125 MPa, 54°C/125 MPa, and 54°C/170 MPa. Processing-induced changes in the physical, chemical, and microbial properties resulting from the intense pressure, shear, and cavitation that milk experiences as it is microfluidized were compared with nonmicrofluidized controls...

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is a highly resistant viraemic virus with devastating socio-economic impact. Its present epidemiology in Eastern Europe and Russia warrants increased biosecurity measures in Western Europe. This includes proactive precautions on traffic of pork products within and between areas that are officially free from ASF. Namely, delayed notification of clinical signs or introduction of a low-virulent strain in ASF-free areas could result in presence of ASFV in veterinary inspected pork and pork by-products...
