A recent study reported that heat stress stimulates osteogenesis in an in vivo rat model using alginate gel and magnetite cationic liposomes. However, for clinical use, the efficacy for promoting osteogenesis needs to be investigated using clinically approved materials, and preferably with animals larger than rats. The aim of this study was to evaluate multiple heat stimuli-triggered osteogenesis in rat tibial defect models using already clinically applicable materials (Resovist® and REGENOS®) and determine the efficacy also in the rabbit...

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have shown a beneficial effect of obesity on bone health; however, most of those studies were not based on bone biopsies. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) could have an effect on bone remodeling. However, there are no data on the effects of MetS in the presence of renal osteodystrophy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between MetS and renal osteodystrophy using the bone histomorphometric turnover-mineralization-volume (TMV) classification...

Novel hybrid elastomer/regenerated chitin (R-chitin) composites were developed, for the first time, by introducing chitin solution (dissolved in alkaline/urea aqueous solution at low temperature) into rubber latex, and then co-coagulating using ethanol as the co-coagulant. During the rapid co-precipitation process, the chitin solution showed rapid coagulant-induced gelation and a porous chitin phase was generated, while the rubber latex particles were synchronously demulsificated to form the rubbery phase. The two phases interlaced and interpenetrated simultaneously to form an Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) structure, which was evidenced by SEM observation...

Exploring non-precious metal electrocatalysts to replace the noble metal based catalysts for full water electrocatalysis is still an ongoing challenge. In this work, porous structured ternary nickel-iron-phosphides (Ni-Fe-P) nanocubes were synthesized through one-step phosphidation of Ni-Fe based Prussian blue analogue. The Ni-Fe-P nanocubes exhibit rough and loose porous structure on the surface under suitable phosphating temperature, which is favorable for the mass transfer and oxygen diffusion during electrocatalysis process...

Implantation is a frequent procedure in orthopedic surgery, particularly in the aging population. However, it possesses the risk of infection and biofilm formation at the surgical site. This can cause unnecessary suffering to patients and burden on the healthcare system. Pure Mg, as a promising metal for biodegradable orthopedic implants, exhibits some antibacterial effects due to the alkaline pH produced during degradation. However, this antibacterial effect may not be sufficient in a dynamic environment, for example, the human body...

The Palos Verdes Shelf (PVS) and the continental slope off the Palos Verdes Peninsula are highly contaminated by degradation products of the pesticide DDT (1-chloro-4-[2,2,2-trichloro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl]benzene). Sediment samples from two box cores were analyzed to obtain further information about the fate of DDT and its degradation products within the environment. After solvent extraction, an alkaline hydrolysis procedure was applied. A comprehensive screening for 26 DDT compounds revealed that DDT and its degradates contaminate not only the extractable fraction but also the fraction released by alkaline hydrolysis...

The removal of Cr(Ⅵ) by chemical reduction-precipitation is widely applied in wastewater treatment plants. Nevertheless, the formation of Cr(OH)3 with gel properties has weak settlement performance, making it necessary to add a coagulant aid to reduce the settling time and improve the settling effect. In this investigation, a high concentration of Cr(Ⅵ) was removed using Na2SO3 as a reducing agent and CaO as a coagulant. An improved reduction and precipitation experiment was modeled by applying a three-factor central composite experimental design (CCD)...

The extracellular acidic milieu in bones results in activation of osteoclasts (OC) and inhibition of osteoblasts (OB) causing a net loss of calcium from the skeleton and the deterioration of bone microarchitecture. Alkalinization through supplementation with potassium citrate (K citrate) has been proposed to limit the osteopenia progression, even though its pharmacological activity in bone microenvironment is not well defined. We evaluated if K citrate was able to prevent the adverse effects that acidic milieu induces on bone cells...

ZSM-5 that uses TPAOH as a template has an Al-rich exterior and defective Si-rich interior, thus it decouples the alkaline treatment difficulties of Al-rich and Si-rich crystals. Alkaline treatment selectively removed the Si-rich interior while the Al-rich exterior was protected, this catalyst showed no change in stability comparing with parent ZSM-5 during the MTP reaction that attributed to enclosed hollow structure and acidity-rich exterior. Pre-treatment by NH4F, however, both removed defective Si-sites and caused distortion in tetrahedral aluminum that made the outer shell susceptible to alkaline treatment...

Exploring efficient and earth-abundant electrocatalysts for water splitting is crucial for various renewable energy technologies. In this work, iron (Fe)-doped nickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam (Ni1.85Fe0.15P NSAs/NF) are fabricated through a facile hydrothermal method followed by phosphorization. The electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the Ni1.85Fe0.15P NSAs/NF electrode possesses high electrocatalytic activity for water splitting. In 1.0 M KOH, the Ni1.85Fe0.15P NSAs/NF electrode only needs overpotentials of 106 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 270 mV at 20 mA cm-2 to drive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively...

This study describes the fabrication and biological evaluation of core-shell bilayered bioceramic microspheres with adjustable compositional distribution via a coaxial bilayer capillary system. Beyond the homogeneous hybrid composites, varying the diameter of capillary nozzles and the composition of the bioceramic slurries makes it easy to create bilayered β-tricalcium phosphate (CaP)/β-calcium silicate (CaSi) microspheres with controllable compositional distribution in the core or shell layer. Primary investigations in vitro revealed that biodegradation could be adjusted by compositional distribution or shell thickness and that poorly soluble CaP located on the shell layer of CaP or CaSi@CaP microspheres was particularly beneficial for mesenchymal stem cell adhesion and growth in the early stage, but the ion release from the CaP@CaSi exhibited a potent stimulating effect on alkaline phosphatase expression of the cells at longer times...

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key reaction for water electrolysis cells and air-powered battery applications. However, conventional metal oxide catalysts, used for high-performing OER, tend to incorporate comparatively expensive and less abundant precious metals such as Ru and Ir, and, moreover, suffer from poor stability. To attempt to mitigate for all of these issues, we have prepared one-dimensional (1D) OER-active perovskite nanorods using a unique, simple, generalizable, and robust method. Significantly, our work demonstrates the feasibility of a novel electroless, seedless, surfactant-free, wet solution-based protocol for fabricating "high aspect ratio" LaNiO3 and LaMnO3 nanostructures...
