Identifying predictors of treatment outcome for nicotine use disorders (NUDs) may help improve efficacy of established treatments, like varenicline. Brain reactivity to drug stimuli predicts relapse risk in nicotine and other substance use disorders in some studies. Activity in the default mode network (DMN) is affected by drug cues and other palatable cues, but its clinical significance is unclear. In this study, 143 individuals with NUD (male n = 91, ages 18-55 years) received a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan during a visual cue task during which they were presented with a series of smoking-related or food-related video clips prior to randomization to treatment with varenicline (n = 80) or placebo...

To maintain upright posture and prevent falling, balance control involves the complex interaction between nervous, muscular and sensory systems, such as sensory reweighting. When balance is impaired, compliant foam mats are used in training methods to improve balance control. However, the effect of the compliance of these foam mats on sensory reweighting remains unclear. In this study, eleven healthy subjects maintained standing balance with their eyes open while continuous support surface (SS) rotations disturbed the proprioception of the ankles...

For the analysis of massive samples containing multiple analytes, the enhancement of detection efficiency is crucial. In this study, a facile method was developed for sequential detection of chloramphenicol (CAP) and gentamicin (GEN) in complex samples, e.g. milk, using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based biosensor. Based on the immune inhibition format, two conjugates of antigen and bovine serum albumin (BSA)-denoted as CAP-BSA and GEN-BSA-were grafted on the same channel of the SPR sensor chip. Two standard curves for CAP and GEN were separately obtained by first mixing a single antibody with different concentrations of the relevant antigen...

Urban parks play a key role in the provision of ecosystem services, actively participating in improving the quality of life and welfare of local residents. This paper reports on the application of an index designed to quantify the allergenicity of urban parks in a number of Spanish cities. The index, which records biological and biometric parameters for the tree species growing there, classifies parks in terms of the risk they pose for allergy sufferers, graded as null, low, moderate or high. In this initial phase, the index was applied to 26 green areas in 24 Spanish cities; green areas varied in type (urban park, historical or modern garden, boulevard, square or urban forest), size 1-100 ha), geographical location, species richness, number of trees and tree density (number of trees / ha...

Essential criteria for the methodological quality and validity of randomized controlled trials are the drop-out rates from both the experimental intervention and the study as a whole. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed these drop-out rates in non-pharmacological schizophrenia trials. A systematic literature search was used to identify relevant trials with ≥100 sample size and to extract the drop-out data. The rates of drop-out from the experimental intervention and study were calculated with meta-analysis of proportions...

The paper presents the Infrared and Raman spectra of the powdered [C3N2H5(+)]2[I(-)∙I3(-)] crystal at the temperature intervals of 11-270K, covering two low-temperature phase transitions: discontinuous at 182/188K (cooling/heating) and continuous at 254K. The research shows that the vibrational states of the pyrazolium cations change significantly during discontinuous phase transition (III→II), while the continuous nature of successive structural transformation is more subtle and displays an insignificant change in the temperature coefficient of numerous vibrations during the II→I PT at 254K...

Nonlinear registration is an important technique to align two different images and widely applied in medical image analysis. In this paper, we develop a novel nonlinear registration framework based on the diffeomorphic demons, where a reciprocal regularizer is introduced to assume that the deformation between two images is an exact diffeomorphism. In detail, first, we adopt a bidirectional metric to improve the symmetry of the energy functional, whose variables are two reciprocal deformations. Secondly, we slack these two deformations into two independent variables and introduce a reciprocal regularizer to assure the deformations being the exact diffeomorphism...
