Occlusal splints to treat bruxism are commonly made from polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in a manual workflow (powder-liquid technique). Today digitalization allows a machine-based manufacturing in subtractive (milling) and additive (printing) means using industrial-made PMMA or comparable resins. An in-vitro study should assess the surface finish and screen the wear resistance of conventional and industrial materials. Therefore, a total of 30 specimens made from conventionally PMMA (group C; powder-liquid, Palapress), polycarbonate ingots (group S; innoBlanc splint plus), and light-curing resin (group A; VarseoWax splint) were polished to examine the surface roughness (Ra) by profilometry and further analyzed by SEM...

OBJECTIVES: To describe the prevalence of e-cigarette users who use them in selected indoor public and workplaces, and private venues in Barcelona (Spain) in 2015. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of a sample of e-cigarette users (≥ 18 years) from Barcelona (n = 600). We calculated the proportion of e-cigarette users who used the device in public and private settings (in the last 30 days). We fit multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for sex and age to calculate the odds ratios (OR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CI) of e-cigarette use by socio-demographic factors, dual use and nicotine-containing e-cigarettes...

BACKGROUND: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) has a high survival rate, but cancer-related late effects in the early post-treatment years need documentation. Hospitalizations are an indicator of the burden of late effects. We identify rates and risk factors for hospitalization from five to ten years after diagnosis for childhood and adolescent ALL survivors compared to siblings and a matched population sample. METHODS: 176 ALL survivors were diagnosed at ≤22 years between 1998 and 2008 and treated at an Intermountain Healthcare facility...

The ultraviolet spectra and electron transition information of 209 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in gas were first calculated via time-dependent density functional theory using Gaussian 09 software. The main and second-order interactional effects of substituent characteristics on the photodegradation of PBDEs were then analysed using a full factorial experimental design. Solvent effects were considered to research the effect and promotion mechanism of solvent molecules on the photodegradation of PBDEs compared with that in gas...

Tracking sewage wastewater in a large lake is difficult. Concentrations of pharmaceuticals that can be used as indicator compounds are quickly diluted and not easy to measure. In this study, we examined the potential of using medically-derived iodine-131 ((131)I, t½ = 8.02 d) as a tracer for Milwaukee sewage effluent in Lake Michigan. (131)I activities in sewage effluent from two Milwaukee wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were measured in conjunction with (131)I activities in water, sediment and biota in the Milwaukee Outer Harbor and Lake Michigan...

BACKGROUND: Headache is a common disorder which may lead to substantial socio-economic loss. Treatment options include self-management strategies, medication and physiotherapy. Physiotherapists need to be able to screen for the presence of migraine and tension-type headache (TTH), so they can adjust their treatment strategies to the type of headache. A quick screening questionnaire to recognize migraine and TTH in the physiotherapy practice is needed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to create a headache screening questionnaire based on the ICHD-3 beta criteria for migraine and TTH, and to establish its content and criterion validity...

BACKGROUND: Hantavirus disease is characterized by endothelial dysfunction. Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) and its antagonist angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) play a key role in the control of capillary permeability. Ang-1 is responsible for maintenance of cell-to-cell contacts whereas Ang-2 destabilizes monolayers. An imbalance of Ang-1 and Ang-2 levels results in enhanced permeability and capillary leakage. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the involvement of angiopoietins in hantavirus-induced disruption of endothelia, we measured the levels of Ang-1 and Ang-2 in hantavirus infection...

Deforestation and forest degradation cause the deterioration of resources and ecosystem services. However, there are still no operational indicators to measure forest status, especially for forest degradation. In the present study, we analysed the thermal response number (TRN, calculated by daily total net radiation divided by daily temperature range) of 163 sites including mature forest, disturbed forest, planted forest, shrubland, grassland, savanna vegetation and cropland. TRN generally increased with latitude, however the regression of TRN against latitude differed among vegetation types...

PURPOSE: Previous studies have supported an association between serum insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and IGF-binding protein 3 (IGFBP3) levels and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the results were inaccurate. It has recently been proposed that IGF1 and IGFBP3 play roles in the time-to-progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) of HCC patients. Our results revealed that serum IGF1 level is predictive of the progression and survival of HCC patients. RESULTS: HCC was associated with a significant reduction in serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels compared to cirrhosis (p = 0...

In this paper, a dual-target electrochemical aptasensor has been developed for simultaneous detection of carcinoembryonic antigen and mucin-1 based on metal ion electrochemical labels and Ru(NH3)6(3+) electronic wires. When targets are present, the interaction between targets and their respective aptamers leads to the dissociation of double-strand DNA because the targets have higher affinity to its aptamer than the complementary strand. And the qualitative and quantitative analyses of the two targets are realized by the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) peaks generated by metal ion electrochemical labels...

PURPOSE: Epileptic seizure detection has been a complex task for both researchers and specialist in that the assessment of epilepsy is difficult because, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are chaotic and non-stationary. METHOD: This paper proposes a new method based on weighted visibility graph entropy (WVGE) to identify seizure from EEG signals. Single channel EEG signals are mapped onto the WVGs and WVGEs are calculated from these WVGs. Then some features are extracted of WVGEs and given to classifiers to investigate the performance of these features to classify the brain signals into three groups of normal (healthy), seizure free (interictal) and during a seizure (ictal) groups...

The use of gamma irradiation technologies generates a number of complex scientific and technical problems; for example, the target is manually loaded onto turntables and is rotated during the entire irradiation process and the MCNPX three-dimensional geometry simulation is kept static. For this, it is necessary to introduce additional approaches. In this paper, two new methodologies are proposed for the simulation of irradiation process in panoramic gamma irradiator. The study was performed at the gamma irradiation facility at the Nuclear Technology Development Center of the National Nuclear Energy Commission, Brazil...

Modulation-doped III-V semiconductor nanowire (NW) heterostructures have recently emerged as promising candidates to host high-mobility electron channels for future high-frequency, low-energy transistor technologies. The one-dimensional geometry of NWs also makes them attractive for studying quantum confinement effects. Here, we report correlated investigations into the discrete electronic sub-band structure of confined electrons in the channel of Si delta-doped GaAs/AlAs core-superlattice NW heterostructures and the associated signatures in low-temperature transport...

We present, within Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory calculations, a quantitative method to identify and assess the partitioning of a large quantum mechanical system into fragments. We then show how within this framework simple generalizations of other well-known population analyses can be used to extract, from first principles, reliable electrostatic multipoles for the identified fragments. Our approach reduces arbitrariness in the fragmentation procedure, and enables the possibility to assess, quantitatively, whether the corresponding fragment multipoles can be interpreted as observable quantities associated to a system's moiety...

Recent experimental evidence suggests that diamines can enhance atmospheric new particle formation more efficiently compared to monoamines such as dimethylamine. Here we investigate the molecular interactions between sulfuric acid (sa) and the di- amine putrescine (put) using computational methods. The molecular structure of up to four sulfuric acid molecules and up to four putrescine molecules were obtained at the ωB97X-D/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. We utilized a domain local pair natural orbital coupled cluster method - DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ - to obtain highly accurate binding energies of the clusters...

The classical semi-quantitative Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel (RRK) theory was used for the calculation of the internal energy dependent reaction rate coefficient of the collision-induced dissociation (CID) reaction in tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The survival yield (SY) was determined by the reaction rate equation for the unimolecular dissociation of the precursor ion. The parameters of the rate equation and the RRK model were approximated based on the instrumental conditions. We used the RRK equation for the description of the basic behavior of the fragmentation reactions and for the estimation of the internal energy of the precursor ion...
