BACKGROUND: Current United States Department of Defense (DoD) estimates indicate that women comprise 17% of the total active duty component. Despite this, the specific health needs of service women have often been neglected. The Center for Health Services Research (CHSR) at the Uniformed Services University (USU) has been working to create a portfolio of rapid research synthesis briefs on topics including, but not limited to reproductive health, infertility, pregnancy loss, and contraceptive use among active duty service women...

PROBLEM: Inefficient implementation of evidence-based care garners increasing attention as a source of suboptimal value of clinical care, and integration of quality improvement methodology into clinical practice represents a potential solution. Academic medical centers (AMCs) often have expertise in implementation science, yet it is not leveraged effectively to solve operational inefficiencies or to rapidly implement evidence-based practices (EBPs). APPROACH: To leverage in-house research expertise, the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Medicine and Center for Health Services Research (CHSR) launched a pilot awards program-Value of Innovation to Implementation Program (VI2 P)-across its health system and six health professional colleges...

To investigate the safety and efficacy of cisplatin(CDDP)treatment after carboplatin(CBDCA)hypersensitivity reactions (CHSR)in gynecologic malignancies, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 544 patients who underwent paclitaxel and CBDCA therapy(TC therapy). CHSR was observed in 18 patients. Eight patients were administered weekly paclitaxel and CDDP therapy(wTP therapy)continuously, to confirm that there was no CDDP hypersensitivity followingintravenous administration of 10 mgCDDP. At the onset of CHSR, the patients had received a median of 9 TC therapy cycles, and the median number of CBDCA administrations was 14...

BACKGROUND: Prior health services research (HSR) agendas for children have been published, but major ones are now over 15 years old and do not reflect augmented understanding of the drivers and determinants of children's health; recent changes in the organization, financing, and delivery of health care; a growing emphasis on population health; and major demographic shifts in the population. A policy-relevant research agenda that integrates knowledge gained over the past 2 decades is essential to guide future child HSR (CHSR)...

Irisflorentin is an isoflavone component derived from the roots of Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC. In traditional Chinese medicine, this herb has pharmacological properties to treat inflammatory disorders. Dendritic cells (DCs) are crucial modulators for the development of optimal T-cell immunity and maintenance of tolerance. Aberrant activation of DCs can induce harmful immune responses, and so agents that effectively improve DC properties have great clinical value. We herein investigated the effects of irisflorentin on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated maturation of mouse bone marrow-derived DCs in vitro and in the contact hypersensitivity response (CHSR) in vivo...

The aim of this study was to determine whether the severity of contact hypersensitivity reactions (CHSRs) can be observed by noninvasive in vivo optical imaging of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity and whether this is an appropriate tool for monitoring an antiinflammatory effect. Acute and chronic CHSRs were elicited by application of a 1% trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB) solution for up to five times on the right ear of TNCB-sensitized mice. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC)-treated and sham-treated mice were monitored by measuring ear swelling and optical imaging of MMP activity...

We studied the cytoskeleton heat shock response (CHSR) in normal interphase embryonic (NERF) and postnatal rat fibroblasts (NPRF) using fluorescent microscopy. Incubation of the cells at 43 degrees C resulted in reorganization of the cytoskeleton. CHSR in NERF and in NPRF were similar. Under heat shock, the bundles of actin filaments disassembled, microtubule morphology changed remarkably, and intermediate filaments collapsed around the nucleus. After 30-120 minutes at 43 degrees C, the cells were still capable of regaining the actin cytoskeleton after the temperature returned to normal (37 degrees C)...

This pilot randomized controlled trial in Kazakhstan aimed to adapt and test the feasibility of a couple-based HIV/STI risk-reduction intervention (CHSR) for couples who are injecting drug users (IDUs). The study examined the preliminary effects of the intervention versus an attentional control wellness promotion (WP) condition on HIV risk behavioral outcomes among 40 couples who are IDUs (n = 80 participants). Compared with WP participants, CHSR participants were significantly more likely to increase condom use and decrease unsafe injection acts at the 3-month follow-up...

The characteristics of childhood as a unique developmental stage of life, the continuity of child health with adult health, and a distinctive child health care system justify a separate focus of health services research on children. Child health services research (CHSR) currently lacks the tools necessary to monitor the impact of health system change on children's health and health care and to compare the effectiveness of alternative treatment modalities. There is an urgent need to build the research capacity of this field of inquiry...
