We report the syntheses and properties of thienopyrrole based unsymmetrical and extended heteroacenes, which are isoelectronic with heptacene (30π) and nonacene (38π), respectively. Optical and electrochemical properties of these seven and nine rings fused systems are studied. The optoelectronic properties of the syn and anti-isomers of the unsymmetrical heteroacenes are also compared. The influence of the position of the heteroatoms in the fused corona, upon the optical and electrochemical properties, is rationalized based on the contributions from the benzenoid vs...

Research in the field of organic photovoltaics has gained considerable momentum in the last two decades owing to the need for developing low-cost and efficient energy harvesting systems. Elegant molecular architectures have been designed, synthesized and employed as active materials for photovoltaic devices thereby leading to a better molecular structure-device property relationship understanding. In this perspective, we outline new macromolecular scaffolds that have been designed within the purview of each of the three fundamental processes involving light harvesting, charge separation and charge transport...

Amphiphilic molecules self-assemble in solvents because of the differential solvation of the hydrophilic and lipophilic functionalities. Small-molecule surfactants have long been known to form micelles in water that can solubilize lipophilic guest molecules in their water-excluded interior. Polymeric surfactants based on block copolymers are also known to form several types of aggregates in water owing either to the mutual incompatibility of the blocks or better solvation of one of the blocks by the solvent...

A method for the determination of nine heavy rare earth elements in the enriched mixture of thulium oxide ytterbium oxide and lutecium oxide by XRF method has been studied in this poper. The samples were prepared by ashing thin film. This method is characterized as it is low cost, economic and simple in standards preparation, and standards can be easily preserved. The accuracy and precision of the results were satisfactory for the demands of prodnction.

Recently. we proposed the use of a run-only headspace-GC-MS method for the biological monitoring of ppb concentrations of unmodified volatile anaesthetics (isoflurane, sevoflurane and halothane, plus nitrous oxide) in post-shift urine of operating theatre personnel. The adoption of enflurane (a volatile anaesthetic no longer used in clinical practice) as a poper and viable internal standard improves intra-day and inter-day accuracy in halide quantitation, providing a GC-MS reference method useful in the practice of biomonitoring of exposure of operating theatre personnel to modern volatile anaesthetics (isoflurane...

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the UK Shunt Evaluation Laboratory was to perform an independent testing of hydrodynamic performance of hydrocephalus shunts and provide systematic reviewing for neurosurgeons and patients. METHODS: Valves were tested long-term in a computer-controlled rig to evaluate their pressure-flow performance both at baseline and under conditions mimicking phenomena, which may alter CSF drainage in vivo. The operating pressures (Poperating) and hydrodynamic resistances (R) of all types of valves, currently in use in the UK, have been evaluated (Codman: Hakim-Precision, Hakim-Programmable, Uni-Shunt, Accu-flo, Holter...

In a recent placebo-controlled study we demonstrated that capsaicin is an efficacious substance in the treatment of non-allergic non-infectious rhinitis. In this study the therapeutic effect lasted more than 9 months. This effect was not based on modulation of inflammation. To evaluate the effect of repeated application of capsaicin to patients with a nasal allergy to house dust mites (HDM), using the same treatment protocol as recently introduced in the treatment of non-allergic patients. Twenty-six patients with rhinitis, 15 females and 11 males (range: 20-46 years; mean 30...
