BACKGROUND: Court-type Thai traditional massage (CTTM) has specific major signal points (MaSP) for treating musculoskeletal conditions. The objectives of this study are to investigate the anatomical surfaces and structures of MaSPs, and to examine blood flow (BF) and skin temperature (ST) changes after applying pressure on the MaSPs on neck, shoulder, and arm areas. METHODS: In the anatomical study, 83 cadavers were dissected and the anatomical surfaces and structures of the 15 MaSPs recorded...

A Gram-stain-positive, catalase-positive, facultatively anaerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, strain NK26-11T, was isolated from soil in Thailand. This strain produced d-lactic acid from glucose homofermentatively, and grew at 20-45 °C and pH 5-8.5. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major respiratory quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7), the DNA G+C content was 42.6 mol%, and the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences analysis, strain NK26-11T was closely related to Bacillus solimangrovi JCM 18994T (93...

Aspergillus terreus was reported as the promising fungal strain for itaconic acid; however, the commercial production suffers from the low yield. Low production yield was claimed as the result of completing the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle towards biomass synthesis while under limiting phosphate and nitrogen; TCA cycle was somewhat shunted and consequently, the metabolite fluxes move towards itaconic acid production route. By regulating enzymes in TCA cycle, it is believed that itaconic acid production can be improved...

Combination of sol-gel chemistry and the electrospinning process leads to unprecedented versatility in the design of nanostructured Magnéli phases. D. Portehault and co-workers demonstrate on page 2654 that adjusting experimental levers, such as the temperature, provides an efficient route for tuning the composition, the crystal structure, the nano-and micro-structures, and the electrical behavior of functional titanium sub-oxide wires.

River Sabarmati is one of the biggest and major river of Gujarat that runs through two major cities of Gujarat, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad and finally meets the Gulf of Khambhat (GoK) in the Arabian Sea. A study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of this river, as it could possibly be one of the major sources for filling up Kalpasar, the proposed man-made freshwater reservoir supposed to be the biggest one in the world. A total of nine sampling stations were established covering 163 km stretch of the river from upstream of Gandhinagar city to Vataman near Sabarmati estuary...

BACKGROUND: Analysis of skeleton is necessary for sex determination. There are several pieces of bone that are used such as pelvic bone and zygomatic arch etc. In the fieldwork of physical anthropologist and forensic physician, the skull or some pieces of the skull can be very useful. In the skull, the mastoid process is a compact and permanent process. Craniometric measurements of mastoid process are interesting parameters to distinguish sex. OBJECTIVE: To study the craniometric measurements of mastoid process of dry skulls in Thais and provide a method for sex determination...

Situs inversus totalis is the complete reversal of positions of major thoracic and abdominal organs. The present study reports the reversed structures and histology of the epithelium of bronchus of a female cadaver 87 years of age, which was found during the dissection in a medical course of gross anatomy. Opening the thoracic cage, the apex of heart was projected to the right side (dextrocardia) while the right and left lungs were alternated. Intra-abdominal organs were also completely alternated, as the liver situated on the left while spleen on the right and the same as the abdominal intestinal tract...

Engineering nanoscale interfaces is a requisite for harnessing electrical and thermal transports within nanostructured materials, especially those destined for thermoelectric applications requiring an unusual combination of low thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity. Nanocomposites open up possibilities in this area, but are still bound to a very narrow range of materials. Here, we report a new approach combining the sol-gel process toward hybrid materials with spark plasma sintering (SPS) to yield functional nanocomposites based on substoichiometric titanium oxides Ti(n)O(2n-1), so-called Magnéli phases...

BACKGROUND: The external laryngeal nerve (ELN) is not routinely identified during thyroid surgery despite clear benefits from doing so. One reason is its anatomical variations, which differ from papers to papers. There were also very few studies of ELN in Thais, especially its relation to inferior constrictor muscle and tip of superior pole of the thyroid gland, which serve as important landmarks when identifying the ELN intraoperatively. OBJECTIVE: To describe the course of ELN and its relations to the inferior constrictor muscle, superior thyroid artery (STA), and tip of superior pole of the thyroid gland in Thais in order to serve as a guide for identification and preservation of the nerve...

Rhizopus oryzae was immobilized on a cotton matrix in a static bed bioreactor. Compared with free cells in a stirred tank bioreactor, immobilized R. oryzae in this bioreactor gave higher lactic acid production but lower ethanol production. The highest lactic acid production rate (2.09 g/L h) with the final concentration of 37.83 g/L from 70 g/L glucose was achieved when operating the bioreactor at 700 rpm and 0.5 vvm air. To better understand the relationship between shear effects (agitation and aeration) and R...

Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) was developed for quantitative determination of hydroxycitric acid and hydroxycitric acid lactone in herbal products of Garcinia atroviridis Griff. Resolution optimization was investigated by varying type, concentration and pH of buffers. Using the pH 9.2 buffer containing 30 mM Na(2)B(4)O(7), 90 mM NaH(2)PO(4) and 0.5 mM tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, baseline resolution (R(s)>1.5) was found for all analytes. Advantages of the developed CZE method include simple sample preparation, fast analysis time within 5 min and high accuracy and precision...

After some general introduction remarks on Indian philosophy, this essay deals with the structure of mind in the Yogacara Buddhist idealist school. Mind can be conceived as having two 'parts': the receptacle consciousness, constituted by the vasanas, or 'marks' left by any individual experience, which 'remains' in the mind in an unconscious state; and the function consciousness, constituted by these same vasanas transforming themselves into conscious ideas and representations, which are either of a cognizing ego or of congnized objects and beings and similar to the experiences that gave rise to them...

Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was developed as a method for quantitative determination of gibberellic acid (GA3) in fermentation broth and commercial products, using 25 mM disodium tetraborate as a buffer at pH 9.2 and 100 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate as a micellar phase. The baseline resolution (Rs of GA3 from other compounds in fermentation broth was achieved with Rs > 2.5. The addition of methanol or acetonitrile in the MEKC buffer did not give a better resolution. Advantages of this MEKC method include high accuracy and precision and no sample preparation except for dilution and filtration...

Increasing numbers of persons in the United States cannot speak, read, write, or understand the English language at a level that permits them to interact effectively. These limitations can hamper encounters between patients and healthcare providers, often leading to misunderstandings as to diagnosis and treatment, which in turn may result in poor patient compliance, unsatisfactory outcomes, and increased costs. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to clinical practice managers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine to assess the needs for language interpretation services and resources among clinical faculty providing healthcare to persons with limited English proficiency (LEP)...
