A case is presented of a neonate born at 32 weeks of gestation with intra-uterine growth retardation. The renal scan performed at 31 weeks showed oligohydramnios but normal kidneys. The neonate was oliguric from birth and required early peritoneal dialysis. Her urine showed heavy proteinuria, and the plasma albumin was very low. Post-natal ultrasonography showed large bright kidneys with reduced corticomedullary differentiation but no dysplastia; arterial and venous flow was normal on Doppler ultrasound...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

CONTEXT: Concept maps have been used to promote meaningful learning and critical thinking. Although these are crucially important in all disciplines, evidence for the benefits of concept mapping for learning in medicine is limited. METHODS: We performed a randomised crossover study to assess the benefits of online testable concept maps for learning in pathology by volunteer junior medical students. Participants (n = 65) were randomly allocated to either of two groups with equivalent mean prior academic performance, in which they were given access to either online maps or existing online resources for a 2-week block on renal disease...

BACKGROUND: Kidney disease is under-documented in physician notes. The use of template-guided notes may improve physician recognition of kidney disease early in training. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether a computerized inpatient renal template note with clinical decision support improves resident knowledge and documentation of kidney disease. METHODS: In this prospective study, first year medical residents were encouraged to use the renal template note for documentation over a one-month period...

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a traditional lecture-based curriculum versus a modified "flipped classroom" curriculum of cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal physiology delivered to first-year graduate students. Students in both courses were provided the same notes and recorded lectures. Students in the modified flipped classroom were required to watch the prerecorded lectures before class and then attend class, where they received a quiz or homework covering material in each lecture (valued at 25% of the final grade) followed by a question and answer/problem-solving period...

Presentation of the Nephrology Quiz and Questionnaire has become an annual tradition at the meetings of the American Society of Nephrology. It is a very popular session judged by consistently large attendance. Members of the audience test their knowledge and judgment on a series of case-oriented questions prepared and discussed by experts. They can also compare their answers in real time, using audience response devices, with the answers of program directors of nephrology training programs in the United States acquired through an Internet-based questionnaire...
