A diverse spectrum of pathologically distinct, nonneoplastic, proliferative conditions of the kidneys and urinary tract demonstrate a expansile growth pattern similar to that of neoplasms. The renal pseudotumors include myriad causes of infections as well as rare noninfectious causes such as sarcoidosis, amyloidosis, and immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD). Rare entities such as cystitis cystica, endometriosis, nephrogenic adenoma, and pseudosarcomatous myofibroblastic proliferation and distinct types of prostatitis comprise tumefactive nontumorous disorders that affect specific segments of the urinary tract...

The two primary nephron-sparing interventions for treating renal masses such as renal cell carcinoma are surgical partial nephrectomy (PN) and image-guided percutaneous thermal ablation. Nephron-sparing surgery, such as PN, has been the standard of care for treating many localized renal masses. Although uncommon, complications resulting from PN can range from asymptomatic and mild to symptomatic and life-threatening. These complications include vascular injuries such as hematoma, pseudoaneurysm, arteriovenous fistula, and/or renal ischemia; injury to the collecting system causing urinary leak; infection; and tumor recurrence...

Small solid renal masses (SRMs) are frequently detected at imaging. Nearly 20% are benign, making careful evaluation with MRI an important consideration before deciding on management. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common renal cell carcinoma subtype with potentially aggressive behavior. Thus, confident identification of ccRCC imaging features is a critical task for the radiologist. Imaging features distinguishing ccRCC from other benign and malignant renal masses are based on major features (T2 signal intensity, corticomedullary phase enhancement, and the presence of microscopic fat) and ancillary features (segmental enhancement inversion, arterial-to-delayed enhancement ratio, and diffusion restriction)...

Wunderlich syndrome (WS), which was named after Carl Wunderlich, is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by an acute onset of spontaneous renal hemorrhage into the subcapsular, perirenal, and/or pararenal spaces, without a history of antecedent trauma. Patients may present with a multitude of symptoms ranging from nonspecific flank or abdominal pain to serious manifestations such as hypovolemic shock. The classic symptom complex of flank pain, a flank mass, and hypovolemic shock referred to as the Lenk triad is seen in a small subset of patients...

Amniotic fluid (AF) is an integral part of the fetal environment and is essential for fetal growth and development. Pathways of AF recirculation include the fetal lungs, swallowing, absorption through the fetal gastrointestinal tract, excretion through fetal urine production, and movement. In addition to being a marker for fetal health, adequate AF is necessary for fetal lung development, growth, and movement. The role of diagnostic imaging is to provide a detailed fetal survey, placental evaluation, and clinical correlation with maternal conditions to help identify causes of AF abnormalities and thereby enable specific therapy...

The approach to imaging a patient with kidney failure continues to evolve. Overstatement of the risk of iodinated contrast material-induced (ie, contrast-induced) acute kidney injury and new guidelines for administration of gadolinium-based contrast media affect screening and the choice of contrast material. Treatment of kidney failure requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. Pretransplant imaging includes assessment for the feasibility of performing a transplant and evaluation for underlying malignancy and peripheral vascular disease...

We describe an inquiry activity that aims to develop students' ability to interpret findings that span whole body systems and so encourage the integration of knowledge. The scenario we choose was the physiological challenge posed by diarrhea and the physiological mechanisms that underpin oral rehydration therapy. Before the staff-facilitated inquiry activity, students engage with an online information resource and complete a formative, but mandatory, prelaboratory quiz. These tasks encourage students to develop some mastery of the relevant physiology before the timetabled inquiry activity...

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care ultrasound is becoming a ubiquitous diagnostic tool, and there has been increasing interest to teach novice practitioners. One of the challenges is the scarcity of qualified instructors, and with COVID-19, another challenge is the difficulty with social distancing between learners and educators. The purpose of our study was to determine if ultrasound-naïve operators can learn ultrasound techniques and develop the psychomotor skills to acquire ultrasound images after reviewing SonoSim® online modules...

OBJECTIVE: To survey OB-GYNs regarding their practice patterns and perspectives when it comes to using magnesium sulfate (magnesium) in the prevention of eclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional web-based 18-item survey given to 564 practicing OB-GYNs in the Pregnancy-Related Care Research Network. The survey used clinical scenarios to look at provider practices for preventing eclampsia in patients who have preeclampsia and relative contraindications to magnesium...

Introduction: Metabolic acidosis is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening condition encountered in the inpatient and emergency department setting. Metabolic acidoses due to renal failure, bicarbonate losses, or lactic acidosis are common conditions, and the appropriate medical management of each is relevant to any inpatient medical provider. Therefore, we created a learning activity that utilizes blackboard-style videos followed by an interactive case-based learning session to help the medical student recognize, diagnose, and manage common causes of metabolic acidosis...
