BACKGROUND: CD5-positive (CD5(+) ) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is characterized by frequent central nervous system recurrence and a predominant activated B-cell-like nature. Primary DLBCL in sanctuary sites (DLBCL-SS) also demonstrates these features, and >70% of patients harbor myeloid differentiation primary response 88 (MYD88) (L265P) and CD79B mutations. The objective of the current study was to elucidate a possible relationship between CD5(+) DLBCL and DLBCL-SS. METHODS: MYD88, CD79B, CD79A, and caspase recruitment domain family member 11 (CARD11) mutations were examined in samples from 40 patients with CD5(+) DLBCL...

This study aimed to evaluate the adverse effects of the insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) on male spermatogenesis, steroidogenesis, and DNA damage in sexually mature and immature rats. Forty male rats (mature and immature) were equally divided into four groups: two mature and two immature groups. IMI groups of both ages were orally administered IMI in corn oil at a concentration of 1 mg/mL for kg BW/day, whereas their respective controls were orally administered corn oil only (1 mL/kg of body weight) daily for 65 days...

Central nervous system (CNS) relapse of aggressive B-cell lymphoma is a rare but serious complication with poor survival. Different approaches have been used to define risks factors for CNS relapse and establish prophylactic measures. Although patients with low or intermediate risk of CNS relapse should not undergo special diagnostic or therapeutic measures, CNS MRI as well as cytology and flow cytometry of the cerebrospinal fluid are suggested for high-risk patients (and patients with testicular involvement) at diagnosis, and prophylactic high-dose methotrexate in patients without proven CNS involvement...

Seminomatous germ cell tumours characteristically affect men in their second-to-fourth decades, presenting as a testicular mass. Metastases when present are usually seen in para-aortic lymph nodes. These tumours are difficult to diagnose clinically and histologically when the presentation is unusual. We describe a seminoma presenting in a 61-year-old male as an inguinal mass with associated lymphadenopathy resembling lymphoma. Past medical history included ipsilateral cryptorchidism and orchidopexy. The tumour responded well to conventional chemotherapy...

We investigated the protective and antioxidative effects of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in streptozotocin STZ-induced diabetic rats. STZ-diabetic rats were exposed daily to treatments with SeNPs and/or insulin and then the effect of these treatments on the parameters correlated to oxidative damage of the rat testes were assessed. Biochemical analysis revealed that SeNPs are able to ameliorate the reduction in the serum testosterone caused by STZ-induced diabetes. Furthermore, SeNPs could significantly decrease testicular tissue oxidative stress markers, namely lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of our study was to characterize the causes of death among cancer patients as a function of objectives: (I) calendar year, (II) patient age, and (III) time after diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: US death certificate data in SEER Stat 8.2.1 were used to categorize cancer patient death as being due to index-cancer, non-index-cancer, and non-cancer cause from 1973 to 2012. In addition, data were characterized with standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), which provide the relative risk of death compared to all persons...

Testicular natural killer/T-cell lymphoma is a rare aggressive extranodal lymphoma associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection. Time to diagnose is crucial as the disease is rapidly progressive and fatal. Early suspicion is documented by imaging studies and testicular biopsies which are key factors for diagnosing testicular natural killer/T-cell lymphoma. However, no reports have described the results of imaging studies. In this paper, contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), fluorine-18-fuorodexoyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography ((18)F-FDG PET/CT) and tumor biopsies were all diagnostic of testicular natural killer/T-cell lymphoma...

BACKGROUND: In a large number of patients with multiple gastrointestinal adenomatous polyps, no causal germline mutation can be found. Non-genetic factors may contribute to the development of adenomatous polyps in these unexplained polyposis patients. In the development of gastrointestinal cancer, prior exposure to abdominal radiotherapy has been identified as such a factor, as it increases the gastrointestinal cancer risk in cancer survivors. A relationship of radiotherapy with intestinal polyposis, however, has not yet been described...

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a major public health issue and represents a significant economic burden to health care systems worldwide. The objective of this analysis was to estimate phase-specific, 5-year and lifetime net costs for the 21 most prevalent cancer sites, and remaining tumour sites combined, in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We selected all adult patients diagnosed with a primary cancer between 1997 and 2007, with valid ICD-O site and histology codes, and who survived 30 days or more after diagnosis, from the Ontario Cancer Registry (N = 394,092)...

The addition of rituximab has improved outcomes in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), however, there remains limited information on the impact of rituximab in those with testicular involvement. All patients with diffuse large cell lymphoma and testicular involvement treated with curative intent were identified in the British Columbia Cancer Agency Lymphoid Cancer Database. In total, 134 patients diagnosed between 1982 and 2015 with diffuse large cell lymphoma involving the testis were identified: 61 received CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone)-like chemotherapy and 73 received CHOP plus rituximab (R-CHOP)...

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) accounts for 30-40% of all lymphoma subtypes. More than half of DLBCLs are estimated to arise from extranodal sites, and are called extranodal DLBCLs. Generally, the outcomes of extranodal DLBCL are not different from those of nodal DLBCL. To our knowledge, this report is the first to discuss the concept and the cell of origin of extranodal DLBCL, with the significance of the presence/absence of each involvement site in determining the outcome. Second, the evidence of clinical manifestation and outcomes of several extranodal DLBCLs requiring treatments other than R-CHOP, which is the current standard therapy for this malignancy, are discussed...

Lymphoproliferative malignancies constitute a wide spectrum of haematological malignancies and their prevalence is widely increasing. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas and Hodgkin disease, frequently involve extranodal soft tissue structures in the head and neck, thorax and abdomen. These malignancies may involve virtually any type of soft tissues to any extent; hence many different imaging manifestations are possible which may mimic other disorders. The imaging characteristics of extranodal lymphomatous soft tissue involvement are described and classified here according to the site of involvement in 6 cases (primary diseases with orbital, muscle, extra testicular, scalp, sinonasal and pachymeningeal/dural involvement)...

Primary Testicular Lymphoma (PTL) is a rare intermediate to high grade tumour, diffuse large cell being the most common type. Unlike nodal Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), testicular DLBCL has a less aggressive course and better prognosis. Metastasis is uncommon in testicular DLBCL. Commonly involved sites are contralateral testes, Waldeyer's ring, skin, lung, Central Nervous System (CNS) and prostate, however the kidneys, liver, bone marrow, pleura and bones are more rarely involved. We report a case of testicular DLBCL which has metastasized to skin and bone marrow with an aggressive clinical course in a year, in-spite of combined modality of therapy given to the patient...
