BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate whether patients with a previous nonresponse to standard of care treatment with ribavirin dosed according to body weight would respond to a high individualized dose of concentration-monitored ribavirin. METHODS: Previous nonresponders to standard of care treatment with peginterferon (peg-IFN) and ribavirin were included. Ribavirin was dosed aiming at a plasma concentration of >15 μmol/L. The initial ribavirin dose was calculated from a formula based on renal function and body weight...

The use of deposited autologous blood instead of allogenic blood is recommended in cases of elective maxillofacial operations if the blood transfusion probability is more than 10%. As an alternative, the controlled intraoperative normovolemic hemodilution and the preoperative use of EPO (Erytropoetin) should be considered. In a retrospective study, we analyzed 438 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery. The perioperative blood loss was determined in order to calculate the transfusion probability in case of the acceptance of 7...

REVIEW
J Hołowiecki
The number of bone marrow transplantation's in autologous settings is recently rising by 20% each year reflecting a great demand. Simultaneously new technics of autologous transplantation are being developed such as APBSCT, transplantation of stem cells after positive purging etc. This progress is very much dependent upon use of recombinant human hematopoietic growth factors (rHu-GF), mainly G-CSF, GM-CSF, erytropoetin and in experimental conditions IL-3, CSF and others. There are two main fields of application of rHu-GF: a) support of hematopoietic reconstitution after transplantation, and b) mobilisation of stem and progenitor cells from bone marrow to the peripheral blood with subsequent harvesting and PBSCT...
