BACKGROUND: Andexanet alfa is a Gla-domainless mutant (S195A) factor Xa (GDXa) approved for acute reversal of oral factor Xa inhibitors. Cardiac surgery patients exposed to andexanet before cardiopulmonary bypass often exhibit severe heparin resistance. There is a paucity of data on the effectiveness and optimal dosage of antithrombin use in this setting. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effect of increased heparin with antithrombin levels on attenuating heparin resistance induced by GDXa...

Overall effectiveness of infection in preventing reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 JN.1 variant was estimated at 1.8% (95% CI: -9.3-12.6%), and demonstrated rapid decline over time since the previous infection, decreasing from 82.4% (95% CI: 40.9 to 94.7%) within 3 to less than 6 months, to a negligible level after one year.

BACKGROUND: First-time detected atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with aggravated prognosis in patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Yet, among patients surviving beyond one year after ACS, it remains unclear how the recurrence of AF within the initial year after ACS affects the risk of stroke. METHODS: With Danish nationwide data from 2000 to 2021, we identified all patients with first-time ACS who were alive one year after discharge (index date)...

Cardiovascular complications related to cancer therapies are broad and variable in onset. These complications are the leading cause of non-cancer related morbidity and mortality in childhood cancer survivors and can also impact ongoing cancer treatment. Despite this understanding, dedicated cardio-oncology programs are lacking in pediatric cardiology. In an attempt to respond to these concerns, a risk-stratified, comprehensive cardio-oncology program was established to address the cardiovascular needs including prevention, early diagnosis, and management of patients with and at risk for cardiovascular complications of cancer therapy...

Biocomposites developed using natural fibers serve as a sustainable alternative to synthetic composite materials. However, narrowing the performance gap between synthetic composites and biocomposites requires serious efforts. A promising approach is the modification of natural fibers using various chemical treatments. This paper investigates the potential of tannic acid (TA) treatment as a sustainable approach to enhance mechanical performance and reduce moisture absorption of flax fabric-reinforced biocomposites...

INTRODUCTION: The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a safe technique that entails body reshaping through buttock augmentation using autologous fat transfer. METHOD: Between 2018 and 2022, 3000 patients underwent surgery. Each procedure commenced with the patient in supine position, starting with abdominal liposuction, followed by fat transfer to hips. Subsequently, the patient was repositioned to a prone stance. Liposuction of the back and waist ensued, concluding the surgery with fat transfer to the buttocks...

OBJECTIVE: This article looks at the evaluation of smoke-free (SF) and tobacco-free (TF) university campus policies that ban smoking (and often vaping) both indoors and outdoors. To assess the effectiveness of these policies, we performed a systematic literature review to answer the following questions: what is the effect of SF/TF policies on campus users' behaviors/norms/perceptions around smoking? Are the SF/TF policies an effective measure for reducing smoking among young adults? What methods and indicators can we use to assess the impact of SF/TF campus policies? What is the theoretical model underpinning the influence of SF/TF policies on the behavior of campus users? METHODS: Three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched over the period from January 2005 to December 2022...

A consensus meeting of national experts from all major national hepatobiliary centres in the country was held on May 26, 2023, at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute & Research Centre (PKLI & RC) after initial consultations with the experts. The Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases (PSSLD) and PKLI & RC jointly organised this meeting. This effort was based on a comprehensive literature review to establish national practice guidelines for hilar cholangiocarcinoma (hCCA). The consensus was that hCCA is a complex disease and requires a multidisciplinary team approach to best manage these patients...

The reliability of local intranasal flaps speaks to the robust vascularity of the nose, which these flaps are based on. The goals for lining replacement, as in any other area of head and neck reconstruction, is to use tissue that best matches the qualities of what is being replaced. The goal of this review is to describe the extent to which local tissues can be used and when to consider regional flaps when the extent of a local flap will not provide enough coverage.

Simultaneous distance measurements on two or more optical wavelengths enable dispersion-based correction of deviations that result from insufficient knowledge of the refractive index along the signal propagation path. We demonstrate a supercontinuum-based approach for highly accurate distance measurements suitable for such an inline refractivity compensation. The distance is estimated from the phase delay observations on the intermode beats. We use a supercontinuum (SC) coherently broadened from a 780 nm frequency comb and spanning the spectral range of 570-970 nm...

We report a stable, low loss method for coupling light from silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonic chips into optical fibers. The technique is realized using an on-chip tapered waveguide and a cleaved small core optical fiber. The on-chip taper is monolithic and does not require a patterned cladding, thus simplifying the chip fabrication process. The optical fiber segment is composed of a centimeter-long small core fiber (UHNA7) which is spliced to SMF-28 fiber with less than -0.1 dB loss. We observe an overall coupling loss of -0...
