BACKGROUND: Kounis syndrome is an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) caused by allergic reactions, including coronary artery spasm (type I) caused by allergies without coronary predisposing factors, pre-existing coronary atherosclerosis, and coronary artery disease. Anaphylaxis leads to plaque rupture or erosion leading to acute myocardial infarction (type II) and acute coronary stent thrombosis (type III). Here we share a case of Kounis syndrome type I caused by an allergy caused by a Cryptopteran bite...

BACKGROUND: Nuts and seeds have been part of diets in most of the world for millenniums, and they have also been consumed in the Nordic and Baltic countries for centuries. Consumption of nuts and seeds is linked with various health outcomes. Therefore, when updating the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR), summarizing the best evidence on key health outcomes from the consumption of nuts and seeds is essential. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the updated evidence on the consumption of nuts and seeds and health outcomes regarded relevant for the Nordic and Baltic countries, as well as their dose-response relationship presented in updated systematic reviews and meta-analyses...

Airway inflammation in asthma has been well recognized for several decades, with general agreement on its role in asthma pathogenesis, symptoms, propensity toward exacerbation, and decline in lung function. This has led to universal recommendation in asthma management guidelines to incorporate the use of inhaled corticosteroid as an anti-inflammatory therapy for all patients with persistent asthma symptoms. However, there has been limited attention paid to the presence and potential impact of systemic inflammation in asthma...

AUDIENCE: This simulation is intended for 4th year medical students. BACKGROUND: Shock is the result of inadequate circulation and failure to perfuse tissues, leading to cellular and organ dysfunction.1 Anaphylactic shock specifically is a type of distributive shock secondary to an IgE (immunoglobulin E) dependent reaction, which can result in respiratory compromise and cardiovascular collapse. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases/Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (NIAID/FAAN) laid out three diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of anaphylaxis...

BACKGROUND: Atopic disease has been associated with immune dysregulation and chronic inflammation, but current practice guideline recommendations do not include the evaluation of inflammatory outcomes among patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between asthma, allergic rhinitis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) using data from the US National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) between 1999-2018. METHODS: We used data from adults in the NHIS (n = 603,140, representing a population of 225,483,286)...

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs discovered in recent years, which are produced by back-splicing involving the 3' and 5' ends of RNA molecules. There is increasing evidence that circRNAs have important roles in cancer, neurological diseases, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and other diseases. In addition, host circRNAs and virus-encoded circRNAs participate in the body's immune response, with antiviral roles. This review summarizes the mechanisms by which host and viral circRNAs interact during the host immune response...

Among the toxic heavy metals, Ni(II) can cause a variety of side effects on human health, such as allergy, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, lung fibrosis, lung, and nasal cancer. It is therefore critical from a public health and environmental perspective to determine and monitor Ni(II) ions in drinking water, foods, and environmental samples. In this study, a novel selective chemosensor (4-[{[4-(3-Chlorophenyl)-1,3-Thiazol-2-yl]Hydrazono}Methyl]phenyl4-methylBenzene Sulfonate (CTHMBS) was developed for the colorimetric detection of Ni(II) in aqueous medium...

Mast cells (MCs) are commonly recognized for their crucial involvement in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, but over time, it has come to light that they also play a role in the pathophysiology of non-allergic disorders including atherosclerosis. The involvement of MCs in the pathology of atherosclerosis is supported by their accumulation in atherosclerotic plaques upon their progression and the association of intraplaque MC numbers with acute cardiovascular events. MCs that accumulate within the atherosclerotic plaque release a cocktail of mediators through which they contribute to neovascularization, plaque progression, instability, erosion, rupture, and thrombosis...

Crocetin is a kind of glycocone naturally occurring in Crocus sativus L.. It is an active metabolite produced by biohydrolysis of Crocus sativus L.. Crocetin has anti-cardiovascular diseases and antioxidant effects, but its anti-allergic effect has not been reported. In this study, the inhibitory effect of crocetin on immunoglobulin E (IgE) - mediated allergic reaction and the mechanism of action were investigated. The passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) was used to elucidate the anti-allergic effects of crocetin in vivo...

This review focuses on the current disparities and gaps in research on the characteristics of the oral ecosystem of denture wearers, making a unique contribution to the literature on this topic. We aimed to synthesize the literature on the state of current knowledge concerning the biological behavior of the different polymers used in prosthetics. Whichever polymer is used in the composition of the prosthetic base (poly methyl methacrylate acrylic (PMMA), polyamide (PA), or polyether ether ketone (PEEK)), the simple presence of a removable prosthesis in the oral cavity can disturb the balance of the oral microbiota...

The recent recognition of a syndrome of tick-acquired mammalian meat allergy has transformed the previously held view that mammalian meat is an uncommon allergen. The syndrome, mediated by IgE antibodies against the oligosaccharide galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), can also involve reactions to visceral organs, dairy, gelatin and other products, including medications sourced from non-primate mammals. Thus, fittingly, this allergic disorder is now called the alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). The syndrome is strikingly regional, reflecting the important role of tick bites in sensitization, and is more common in demographic groups at risk of tick exposure...

UNLABELLED: Immune-mediated acute coronary syndrome, also known as Kounis syndrome (KS), is an underrecognized and challenging diagnosis. In this case report, we present a case of cardiac arrest secondary to iodinated contrast allergy requiring emergent cardiac catheterization and hemodynamic support secondary to type 2 KS. KS necessitates a high index of clinical suspicion by the treating physician in order to address both the hypersensitivity reaction and its cardiac implications. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Kounis syndrome (KS) is a clinically distinct entity from anaphylaxis; managing KS in the same way as anaphylaxis can worsen cardiac demand and ischemia...
