Coronary thrombosis was recognized since 19th century as clinical entity with bad outcomes; only in 1912 it was reported that acute myocardial infarction had to been distinguished from angina pectoris. First diagnostic test was electrocardiogram, while white blood cells count and erythrocytes sedimentation rate were the only available laboratory tests. Late in the 60s and 70s glutammic oxaloacetic and glutamic pyravate transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase were added to biomarkers pool to provide a diagnosis of myocardial infarction related to myocardial cells injury...

Natural tetrapeptide Goralatide (AcSDKP) is a selective inhibitor of primitive haematopoietic cell proliferation. It is not stable in vivo and decomposes within 4.5min when applied to live cells. In this work we developed an analog of Goralatide that exhibits cytotoxicity towards human myeloid HL-60, HEL, Nalm-6 leukemia cells, endothelial HUVEC, glioblastoma U251 and transformed kidney 293T cells. The Goralatide analog showed significant stability in organic solution with no tendency to degrade oxidatively...

Although transplantation is the common treatment for end-stage renal failure, allograft rejection and marked morbidity from the use of immunosuppressive drugs remain important limitations. A major challenge in the field is to identify easy, reliable and noninvasive biomarkers allowing the prediction of deleterious alloreactive immune responses and the tailoring of immunosuppressive therapy in individuals according to the rejection risk. In this study, we first established that the expression of the RC isoform of the CD45 molecule (CD45RC) on CD4 and CD8 T cells from healthy individuals identifies functionally distinct alloreactive T cell subsets that behave differently in terms of proliferation and cytokine secretion...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Observational data indicate that newer vitamin D compounds such as paricalcitol can suppress serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) and reduce proteinuria in patients with CKD. To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of paricalcitol for CKD, we conducted a meta-analysis of the published randomized controlled trials (RCTs). DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and article reference lists were searched for RCTs that compared paricalcitol with placebo in the treatment of patients with stage 2-5 CKD...

To assess the accuracy of the noninvasive tools, fibrotest (FT) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM) for assessing liver fibrosis in kidney-transplant patients with chronic hepatitis virus B (HBV) or C (HCV) infection. Thirty-eight consecutive kidney-transplant patients with HCV (n = 26) or HBV (n = 12) underwent liver biopsies followed by a FT and LSM. Liver biopsies gave the following fibrosis-grade distribution using METAVIR scores: F0/F1, n = 10 (26.9%); F2, n = 14 (36.8%), F3, n = 7 (18.42%); F4, n = 7 (18...

BACKGROUND: We conducted a case-control study to examine the impact of coronal heart disease (CHD) risk factors on calcium oxalate (CaOX) stone formation. METHODS: Variables included body mass index (BMI), current alcohol use, smoking habit, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, and hyperuricemia. Data suf fi cient for analysis were obtained for 181 CaOX stone formers and 187 controls. RESULTS: Seven of 181 stone formers (3...

We have identified a new tyrosine kinase from human breast cancer cells called Rak (a Russian word for cancer) that shares 51% identity with c-Src. Sequencing of the full-length complementary DNA revealed that Rak is a tyrosine kinase with a molecular weight of 54,000 that contains SH2 and SH3 domains, as well as tyrosine residues analogous to the autophosphorylation and regulatory tyrosines of the Src family. Biochemical and site-directed mutagenesis analyses revealed that a carboxy-terminal peptide of p54rak was phosphorylated by a cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase (CSK) and that, as in the Src family, it is the COOH-terminal tyrosine that is phosphorylated by CSK...
