BACKGROUND: It is not known how widely used in Italy an incremental start to in peritoneal dialysis (Incr-PD) is. METHODS: By analyzing the peritoneal dialysis (PD) censuses conducted by the PD Study Group (GSDP-SIN) for the years 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 in all the Centers performing PD in Italy, the use of Incr-PD, i.e. continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) with 1 or 2 exchanges/day or automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) with 3-4 sessions/week, was examined among incident PD patients...

OBJECTIVE: There are few reports describing sleep disturbance (SD) in children on automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), and they are mostly based on the application of questionnaires. As far as we know, only two studies used polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard for the diagnosis of SD. This is the first study assessing SD in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on APD in our country. METHODS: This was an observational and descriptive study. Children up to 18 years of age who had undergone APD for a minimum of three months were considered eligible...

Binding of drug molecules to plasma proteins is an important parameter in assessing drug ADME properties. Plasma protein binding (PPB) assays are routinely performed during drug discovery and development. A fully automated PPB assay was developed using rapid equilibrium dialysis (RED) device and Tecan workstation coupled to an automated incubator. The PPB assay was carried out in unsealed RED plates which allowed the assay to be fully automated. The plasma pH was maintained at 7.4 during the 6-h dialysis under 2% CO2 condition...

A 57-year-old man on dialysis presented with fever due to Pseudomonas septicemia. Workup revealed very high triglycerides and serum ferritin levels. A bone marrow examination showed hemophagocytosis. A diagnosis of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) was made and steroids were started. He was put on automated peritoneal dialysis. Patients' condition continued to deteriorate and he succumbed to his illness. This case illustrates the development of HLH secondary to infections which are increasingly being recognized in the literature...

♦ Background: The use of pH-neutral peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids low in glucose degradation products (GDP) may better preserve the peritoneal membrane and have fewer systemic effects. The effects of conversion from conventional to neutral-pH, low-GDP PD fluids in prevalent patients are unclear. Few studies on the role of neutral-pH, low-GDP PD have studied residual renal function, ultrafiltration, peritonitis incidence and technique failure, transport characteristics, and local and systemic markers of inflammation in prevalent PD patients...

Primary hyperoxaluria is the underlying cause of oxalosis and is a life-threatening autosomal recessive disease, for which treatment may require dialysis or dual liver-kidney transplantation. The most common primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) is caused by genetic mutations of a liver-specific enzyme alanine:glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGT), which results in the misrouting of AGT from the peroxisomes to the mitochondria. Pharmacoperones are small molecules with the ability to modify misfolded proteins and route them correctly within the cells, which may present an effective strategy to treat AGT misrouting in PH1 disorders...

There are few methods available for injectable liposome production under good manufacturing practices (GMP). Injectable liposome production processes under GMP generally consist of liposome formation, size homogenization, organic solvent removal, liposome concentration control and sterilization. However, these complicated and separate processes make it difficult to maintain scalability, reproducibility and sterility. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel one-step in-line closed liposome production system that integrated all production processes by combining the in-line thermal mixing device with modified counterflow dialysis...

BACKGROUND: Criteria for how to assess removal rate of inorganic phosphorous (iP) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) and whether iP removal differs between different PD modalities are debated. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 73 prevalent patients on continuous ambulatory PD (n = 16), continuous cyclic PD (n = 8) or automated PD (n = 49) with mean age 54 (range, 18-87) years, 46 males, underwent standard peritoneal equilibration test (PET) and 24-hour collection of dialysate with measurements of iP, urea and creatinine in all samples and bags...

OBJECTIVES: In Taiwan, peritoneal dialysis (PD) and haemodialysis are fully accessible to patients with end-stage renal disease. However, the usage of PD is considered low in Taiwan. Since 2005, 4 major policies have been implemented by Taiwan's Ministry of Health and Welfare, namely a multidisciplinary predialysis care programme and usage increasing the PD incidence as a key performance indicator (KPI) for hospital accreditation, both of which were implemented in 2006; reimbursement of the glucose-free dialysate, icodextrin that was implemented in 2007; and insurance reimbursement for renting automated PD machines that was implemented in 2008...

Early innovations in the delivery of peritoneal dialysis (PD) markedly improved its acceptability and lowered peritonitis rates. The standard osmotic agent was, and continues to be dextrose, an agent that is not ideal as it is readily absorbed. The development of icodextrin-containing dialysis fluid has allowed a long dwell time to provide more effective ultrafiltration. The development of a smaller, more easily used automated cycler, led to an increase in the proportion of patients on the cycler as opposed to CAPD...

Since 2009, the peritoneal dialysis (PD) registry has been carried out as part of the annual nationwide survey conducted by the Statistical Survey Committee of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy with the cooperation of the Japanese Society for Peritoneal Dialysis. In this study, the current status of PD patients is reported on the basis of the results of the survey conducted at the end of 2013. The subjects were PD patients who lived in Japan and participated in the 2013 survey. Descriptive analysis was performed for various items including the current status of the combined use of PD and another dialysis method such as hemodialysis (HD) or hemodiafiltration (HDF), the method of exchanging dialysate, the use of an automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) machine, and the incidences of peritonitis and catheter exit-site infection...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The use of electronic alerts (e-alerts) may increase the detection rate of acute kidney injury (AKI) since they are sensitive to small changes in serum creatinine. Our aim was to follow-up a cohort of patients presenting to hospital from the community with AKI (community-acquired AKI [c-AKI]), detected through the use of e-alerts, and describe their short-term outcomes regardless of whether they were subsequently admitted to hospital. METHODS: Blood samples for all hospital attenders from the community either to the Accidents and Emergency department or one of the acute care areas of the hospital during a 6-month period (November 1, 2013-April 30, 2014) were screened for presence of c-AKI using a locally developed e-alerts system based on Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria...

Sample preparation is the bottleneck of many analytical methods, including ion chromatography (IC). Procedures based on the application of membranes are important, yet not well appreciated means for clean-up and analyte preconcentration of liquid samples. Filtration, ultrafiltration, the variety of dialysis techniques, i.e. passive dialysis, Donnan dialysis and electrodialysis, as well as gas-diffusion are being reviewed here with respect to their application in combination with IC. Instrumental aspects including hardware requirements, configuration of membrane separation units and membrane characteristics are presented...

Two patients with end-stage-renal-disease on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) presented with pleural effusions. The aspirated fluid was categorised as transudate, based on alkaline pH, low protein and lactic dehydrogenase level. A striking feature of the pleural fluid was, its very high glucose content that resulted from translocation of dextrose containing peritoneal dialysate into the pleural space via a pleuroperitoneal connection. One patient was transferred to hemodialysis, which led to complete resolution of pleural effusion...

BACKGROUND: South Asian countries have a population of 1.7 billion and are classified as low-middle to poor income nations. Their health care systems cannot presently meet the growing need for renal replacement therapy (RRT), provided as haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis (PD). Most patients cannot afford the treatment and quickly default. Furthermore, most of the population is located in rural areas, where there are few treatment centres; therefore, there is a huge gap between those treated and those in need...

Operative mortality of Stanford type A aortic dissection( AAD) repair with previous cardiac surgery is high, especially with previous coronary artery bypass grafting. We report an extremely rare case of AAD related to the PAS-Port system. A 68-year-old male patient on dialysis was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of AAD. Half a year before he had undergone off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting using PAS-Port system for a proximal anastomosis of a vein graft. Urgent graft replacement of the ascending aorta was performed, and the proximal anastomotic site of the vein graft was attached to the prosthetic graft...
