Dengue virus three, Chikunguya and Zika have entered the national territory through the south of the country. Cases and outbreaks of yellow fever have now been identified in the Americas where it threatens to expand. Although Mexico has a robust epidemiological surveillance system for vector-borne diseases, our country must be alert in case of its possible introduction into the national territory. The Zika virus (ZIKV), a flavivirus related to yellow fever, dengue, and West Nile, originated in the Zika forest in Uganda and was discovered in a rhesus monkey in 1947. The disease now has "explosive" pandemic potential, with outbreaks in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas. To date, the CDC has issued travel alerts for at least 30 countries and territories in Latin America, the Caribbean, Polynesia, and Cape Verde in Africa.

During an epidemic of Chikunguya fever in Ibadan 16 strains of Chikungunya virus were recovered from children reporting sick with fever at the University College Hospital and Oluyoro Catholic Hospital Outpatient Clinic. Twelve strains were obtained from children within the 1-4 year age group, two from 5-10 year group and one each from less than one-year age group, and 10-15 year age group. A retrospective survey for neutralising antibodies to Chikungunya shows a significantly higher proportion of children were positive for Chikungunya N antibodies just after the 1969 epidemic than in 1974 just before the epidemic, with resultant pooling of Chikungunya seronegative children who are susceptible to infection...
