This manuscript describes the direct detection of mesteroloe sulfo-conjugated metabolites by liquid chromatography/quadrupole/time of flight mass spectrometry (LC/Q/TOFMS) with special focus on evaluation of their retrospective detectability and their structure elucidation. A comparison of their long-term detectability, with the mesterolone main metabolite (1α-methyl-5α-androstan-3α-ol-17-one) excreted in glucuronide fraction and detected by gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (GC/HRMS), is also presented...

INTRODUCTION: Testosterone treatment has evolved rapidly over the past 25 years as new, more effective and convenient methods have become available. This study reports experience with seven different methods, introduced on the market in the UK. AIM: To establish the symptom response when testosterone treatment was initiated on the basis of clinical features and symptoms of androgen deficiency, and the resulting endocrine, biochemical and physiological responses...

Infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) is a worldwide problem affecting both freshwater and seawater fish. Vaccines developed against IPNV are not as efficient in the field as they are in tests. Moreover, research in the development of vaccines against IPNV has often shown that vaccines can stimulate the immune response of fish antibodies but do not protect efficiently against IPNV. In fact, sometimes dead infected fish show high antibody titers against IPNV. This suggests that the magnitude of total antibodies stimulated by the vaccine is not necessarily related to the level of protection against IPN, suggesting that a new method is needed to evaluate vaccine stimulation of the immune system...

Mesterolone (1alpha-methyl-5alpha-androstan-17beta-ol-3-one) is a synthetic anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) with reported abuses in human sports. As for other AAS, mesterolone is also a potential doping agent in equine sports. Metabolic studies on mesterolone have been reported for humans, whereas little is known about its metabolic fate in horses. This paper describes the studies of both the in vitro and in vivo metabolism of mesterolone in racehorses with an objective to identify the most appropriate target metabolites for detecting mesterolone administration...

Poliovirus-infected cells contain a previously unrecognized particle which appears to be an intermediate in virion synthesis and therefore has been named proviron. It sediments at about 125S, contains the three procapsid proteins, VP-0, VP-1, and VP-3, and has 35S viral RNA. It is disrupted both by sodium dodecyl sulfate and EDTA but the RNA resists digestion by ribonuclease. Pulsechase experiments and studies employing the virus-specific inhibitor, guanidine, all indicate that the proviron is formed by combination of newly made RNA with the procapsid...

Sterile semen of three brothers was investigated biochemically. Most strikingly was the strong similarity of both the amino acid and the carbohydrate composition of the semen. Inside the spermatozoa much more fructose and glucose was present than normally is found. It could be shown that in the seminal plasma peptides and proteins were present all containing more or less beta-alanine and all able to bind glucose and fructose. After incubation with labelled glucose it was evident that inside the spermatozoa enzymes requried for formation of lactic acid were lacking or inactive...

42 subfertile patients with normal levels of plasma testerone (26 subnormal, suffering from oligospermia) have been treated with a combination of clomiphene citrate (50 mg Clomid daily) and mesterolon (50 mg Proviron daily) over a period of at least 3-6 months. The treatment resulted in pregnancy in 6 cases and in a significant improvement of the sperm count in 16. In 7, however, whilst the sperm count improved the qualitative results were unsatisfactory as many sperms were immature. Restricted spermatogenesis and a sperm count below 5 million/ml must be considered unfavourable but does not constitute a counter-indication to the combined therapy...

42 subfertile male ambulatory patients were treated with Proviron. Moderate oligoastheno-teratozoospermia was the most common injury in sperm analysis. The treatment did not change the amount of plasma FSH, testosterone or prostate phosphatase. Acid phosphatase and citric acid of semen showed an increased activity with mesterolone treatment. The amount of fructose decreased, it is probably due to the increased number of spermatozoa, which need more fructose for their metabolism respectively. The sperm of 93% of the patients improved or stayed unchanged...
