The antioxidant interactions between several natural phenolic and non-phenolic compounds (catechin, quercetin, rutin, resveratrol, gallic acid and ascorbic acid) and organic acids (tartaric, citric and dihydroxyfumaric acids) have been investigated through the DPPH method. Main additive and antagonistic interactions have been found for the combinations of catechin, quercetin, resveratrol and gallic acid with tartaric and citric acids; such behavoir can be due to the enhanced stability of the phenolic compounds in the acidic media...

Significant progress has been achieved on radionuclide transport in fractured rocks due to worldwide urgent needs for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). Transport models designed with accurately constrained parameters are a fundamental prerequisite to assess the long-term safety of repositories constructed in deep formations. Focusing on geological disposal systems of HLW, this study comprehensively reviews the behavoir of radionuclides and transport processes in multi-scale fractured rocks...

Subtelomeric deletions represent an important class of abnormalities to be considered when investigating genetic links to intellectual disability (ID). One subtelomeric deletion found on the long arm of chromosome 11q produces a characteristic phenotype that includes ID and is often referred to as Jacobsen syndrome (JBS). Previously, researchers found an inverse relationship between IQ and deletion size. While useful, IQ does not provide a comprehensive picture of the cognitive-behavioral strengths and weaknesses in JBS, nor does it reveal how the profiles evolve as these individuals age...

The desorption kinetics of methanol, ethanol, and water from graphene covered Pt(111) are investigated. The temperature programmed desorption (TPD) spectra for both methanol and ethanol have well-resolved first, second, third, and multilayer layer desorption peaks. The alignment of the leading edges is consistent with zero-order desorption kinetics from all layers. In contrast, for water, the first and second layers are not resolved. At low water coverages (<1 monolayer (ML)) the initial desorption leading edges are aligned but then fall out of alignment at higher temperatures...

The interactions between cancer cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) are important with respect to a number of cell behavoirs, yet remain unclear. In this study, self-assembled monolayers with different terminal chemical groups (hydroxyl (-OH), carboxyl (-COOH), animo (-NH2), mercapto (-SH), and methyl (-CH3)) were employed as substrates for the culture of MCF-7 cells to examine effects on cell behavior. Cell spreading was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, tallin expression by immunofluorescence, proliferation rate by counting cell numbers, cell cycle by flow cytometry, metabolism by high-performance liquid chromatography and cell migration by live cell imaging...

In this contribution the behavior of an elderly couple, recorded by a radio module system in their own home is analyzed. There is an increasing interest in giving elderly people the possibility to live at their own homes as long as possible. Since diseases like dementia are diagnosed through the change of behavior, especially the activities of daily living (ADL), there is a growing need of an objective instrument for measuring behavioral changes. Therefore the Eventlogger was developed and installed for 32 days in a home of an elderly couple...

Low energy properties of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with Fibonacci exchange modulation are studied using the real space renormalization group method for strong exchange modulation. Using the analytical solution of the recursion equation, the true asymptotic behavoir is revealed, which was veiled by the finite size effect in the previous numerical works. It is found that the ground state of this model belongs to a new universality class with a logarithmically divergent dynamical exponent which is neither like Fibonacci XY chains nor like XY chains with relevant aperiodicity...

To investigate the behavoir of TMJ condylar cartilage cells in vitro, the mandibular condylar cartilage cells were harvested from a 5-month-old human fetus by dissection and sequential digestion with 0.25% trypsin and 0.2% collagenase (type II). The isolated cells were cultured in DMEM medium and identified by histochemical and immunohistochemical methods. Cell proliferation, morphology and ultrastructure were observed by phase-contrast microscope, cytologic staining and electronic microscope. In primarily cultured cells, polygonal chondroblast-like cells dominated and they were confirmed by the positive result of immunohistochemical examination for type II collagen and Toludin blue staining...

Regression as a potentially adaptive psychological response is used as a conceptual model to understand a variety of behaviors seen in beginning psychiatric residents on an inpatient service. The behaviors, discussed and illustrated with brief examples, are (1) competition and identification, (2) sexuality, (3) aggression, (4) depression and despair, (5) dependency, and (6) fusion with patients. Factors on an inpatient service that foster regressive behavior in new residents are discussed, and some of the potential resolutions of the behavoirs are proposed...

Negatively valued masculinity (M-) and femininity (F-) personality scales were developed to supplement the positively valued Masculinity (M+) and Femininity (F+) scales of the Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ; Spence & Helmreich). M- consisted of traits that had been judged to be (a) more typical of males than females, (b) undesirable in both sexes, and (c ) agentic or instrumental in content. Two F- scales were developed, both containing stereotypically feminine, undesirable traits, one set of traits referring to communionlike characteristics (Fc-) and the other to verbal passive-aggressive qualities (FVA-)...

This article reviews the literature concerning the behavioral and psychological response of men and their wives to the vasectomy operation when used as a contraceptive technique. The data suggest that two primary changes may frequently be observed postoperatively. Individuals who have experienced anxiety in conjunction with intercourse because of a fear of contraceptive failure or pregnancy tend to report a decline in anxiety and a disinhibition of sexual arousal postoperatively. Also, test results suggest that behavoir patterns within the marital dyad are altered in some cases when the men adopt stereotyped masculine behavior, presumably to deny any suggestion that they are less masculine because of the operation...

The hypothesis that the action of hallucinogenic drugs is mediated by a depression of the activity of brain serotonergic (raphe) neurons was tested by examining the behavioral effects of d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) while studying the activity of raphe neurons in freely moving cats. Although the results provide general support for the hypothesis, there were several important dissociations. (i) Low doses of LSD produced only small decreases in raphe unit activity but significant behavoiral changes; (ii) LSD-induced behavioral changes outlasted the depression of raphe unit activity; and (iii) raphe neurons were at least as responsive to LSD during tolerance as they were in the nontolerant condition...

Pyrroxan (20 mg/kg, i.p.), a new potential antianxiety agent, increased brain norepinephrine (NE) turnover in rats, reflecting a possible central alpha-adrenergic receptor blocking activity. In contrast, chlordiazepoxide (20 mg/kg, i.p.), a widely used antianxiety agent, did not alter the NE turnover. Pyrroxan did not affect overall DA turnover although it did appear to accelerate DA turnover initially. The initial potentiation of DA turnover may indicate a short-lasting blocking action on DA receptors. In comparison, chlordiazepoxide (20 mg/kg, i...
