Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is the third leading cause of death in the US, and is associated with periodic exacerbations, which account for the largest proportion of health care utilization, and lead to significant morbidity, mortality, and worsening lung function. A subset of patients with COPD have frequent exacerbations, occurring 2 or more times per year. Despite many interventions to reduce COPD exacerbations, there is a significant lack of knowledge in regards to their mechanisms and predisposing factors...

Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), a brominated flame retardant with the largest production volume worldwide, is employed as a reactive and additive flame retardant, and also as an intermediate in the production of other retardants. The constant release of TBBPA into the environment has attracted increasing attention to its potent health effects. To date, the vast majority of health-related research on TBBPA has focused on oral exposure. This study aims to explore the excretion characteristics of TBBPA in living organisms following inhalation exposure...

BACKGROUND: Edentulism has been associated with poorer health outcomes in geriatric populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March 2006 and June 2008, oral health screening examinations were completed for 584 residents of 10 nursing facilities in four eastern Iowa counties...

BACKGROUND: Tooth loss is an indication of the oral health of a population, and the possible effects of oral health on general health of the elders has been reported. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken among 392 consenting elders in Idikan, Ibadan, Nigeria. Information on socio-demographic characteristics, causes and effects of tooth loss was obtained using a pretested semistructured questionnaire...

INTRODUCTION: Limited data are available on the real-world effectiveness of newer oral disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in multiple sclerosis. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively compare the real-world effectiveness of dimethyl fumarate (DMF), fingolimod, teriflunomide, and injectable DMTs in routine clinical practice based on US claims data. METHODS: Patients newly-initiating DMF, interferon beta (IFNβ), glatiramer acetate (GA), teriflunomide, or fingolimod in 2013 were identified in the Truven MarketScan Commercial Claims Databases (N = 6372)...

Statins are the most widely prescribed medications worldwide for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. They inhibit the activity of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl co enzyme A reductase (HMG-R) an enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis in higher organisms and in isoprenoid biosynthesis in some bacteria. We hypothesized that statins may influence the microbial community in the gut through either direct inhibition or indirect mechanisms involving alterations to host responses. We therefore examined the impact of rosuvastatin (RSV) on the community structure of the murine gastrointestinal microbiota...

INTRODUCTION: Levels of oral health and economic status are unequally distributed throughout the population. Inequality has multiple causes and that the effect of Socio Economic Status (SES) and demographic factors, on oral health is mediated through several factors. Association between cognitive ability and oral health had been demonstrated in older age groups but adolescents and younger adults have received relatively little attention in this field. AIM: To establish the role of cognitive ability as a determinant of SES and oral health status among adolescent college students of Benagluru, Karnataka, India...

This study examined the association between Latino acculturation indicators (language and citizenship/nativity status) and periodontitis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2012. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were performed and all analyses were adjusted for the complex survey design. Results showed that 63.2% of participants had periodontitis: 9.4% mild, 37.9% moderate, and 16% severe. Language was significantly associated with periodontitis after adjusting for age, educational level, gender, usual source of care, flossing, smoking, and glycohemoglobin level (P = ...

PURPOSE: Despite the prevalence of oral disease, the subject of oral health historically has been absent from medical education. We have developed an interprofessional curriculum in collaboration with our school of dentistry to teach oral health in the primary care setting to physician assistant (PA) students. The goal was to create and assess the impact of a curricular model that would be adaptable to various academic settings. METHODS: A blend of classroom, clinical skills lab, observations in the dental clinic, and observed structured clinical examinations was used to teach oral health to first-year (didactic year) PA students...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this case-control study was to evaluate the association between parent/caregivers' illness perception and early childhood caries (ECC). METHODS: Parent/caregivers of children younger than six years old were recruited at the dental clinic of an urban children's hospital between June 2013 and September 2015. Cases were caregivers of ECC children; controls were caregivers of children without ECC. Caregivers completed the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised for Dental (IPQ-RD) assessing cognitive (identity, consequences, control, timeline, illness coherence, cause) and emotional representations of dental caries...

In all 50 states, physicians and dentists are required to report suspected cases of abuse and neglect to social service or law enforcement agencies. The purpose of this report is to review the oral and dental aspects of physical and sexual abuse and dental neglect and the role of physicians and dentists in evaluating such conditions. This report addresses the evaluation of bite marks as well as perioral and intraoral injuries, infections, and diseases that may be suspicious for child abuse or neglect. Physicians receive minimal training in oral health and dental injury and disease and, thus, may not detect dental aspects of abuse or neglect as readily as they do child abuse and neglect involving other areas of the body...
