Despite the Affordable Care Act increasing the number of insured individuals in Michigan, many individuals cannot access care as the state continues to have a provider shortage that is likely to get worse. It is well documented that when individuals lack primary care access, their health suffers. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) could help reduce the state's health care shortage, as the care they provide is safe, cost effective, and high quality. Unfortunately, Michigan's APRN practice restrictions limit these professionals from autonomously providing care to the underserved and rural populations that need them the most...

Healthcare delivery in the Unites States stimulates policy change at a rapid pace. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) is intended to expand access to care and ultimately improve the health of Americans. The Triple Aim, created by The Institute for Healthcare Improvement, delineates policy implications for improving population health, the healthcare experience, and per capita cost. The Quadruple Aim adds a fourth policy implication, for example, addressing the needs of the healthcare provider...

Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are increasing in number and their value is becoming more evident as Texas and the region face a severe shortage of primary care physicians. APRNs can assist in meeting the needs of a growing and complex healthcare system. Increasing the pool of APRNs will allow healthcare providers to improve access to care and deliver quality outcomes. Hospitals and other healthcare providers have been limited in the number of APRN students they could accept for clinical training due to cost...

PURPOSE: This paper celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Western Institute of Nursing, the nursing organization representing 13 states in the Western United States, and envisions a preferred future for nursing practice, research, and education. BACKGROUND: Three landmark calls to action contribute to transforming nursing and healthcare: the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010; the Institute of Medicine report Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health; and the report Advancing Healthcare Transformation: A New Era for Academic Nursing...

UNLABELLED: Literature related to primary care and behavioral health integration initiatives is becoming abundant. The United States' 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act included provisions encouraging increased collaboration of care for individuals with behavioral and physical health service needs in the public sector. There is relatively little known of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses' (APRNs) roles with integrating primary and behavioral healthcare. The goal of this review article is to: (a) define integration of physical and behavioral healthcare and potential models; (b) answer the question as to what are effective evidence based models/strategies for integrating behavioral health and primary care; (c) explore the future role and innovations of APRNs in the integration of physical and behavioral healthcare...

PURPOSE: With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, recommendations of the Future of Nursing Report, and recent regulatory changes by state boards of nursing, registered nurse (RN) roles are expanding. In this article, we advocate for RN prescribing as an expanded role in the United States. METHODS: We reviewed the literature on RN prescribing, the background in both high- and low-resource countries, levels of prescribing, specialized settings for RN prescribing, both RN and patients views/perceptions of prescribing, and evaluation research...

Similar to other states, Georgia is facing workforce challenges within its community mental health system. These issues may be exacerbated as implementation of the Affordable Care Act expands demand for behavioral health services. Georgia's Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities commissioned a needs assessment to examine the shortage of prescribing providers (psychiatrists, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants) in the state's public mental health system. A unique partnership of key stakeholders developed and conducted the mixed-methods needs assessment at six of Georgia's 27 community mental health centers serving more than 40,000 patients annually...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between autonomy and empowerment of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and predictor variables of physician oversight, geographical location, and practice setting. As the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is implemented, these characteristics are vital to understanding how APRNs practice and the relationship of APRNs to other healthcare team members, including physicians. DATA SOURCES: This was a descriptive, correlational survey of APRNs in New Mexico exploring autonomy and empowerment in relation to variables of physician oversight, geographical location, and practice setting...

BACKGROUND: Physician recommendations for cancer screening and prevention are associated with patient compliance. However, time constraints may limit physicians' ability to provide all recommended preventive services, especially with increasing demand from the Affordable Care Act in the United States. Team-based practice that includes advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants (APRN/PA) may help meet this demand. This study investigates the relationship between an APRN/PA visit and receipt of guideline-consistent cancer screening and prevention recommendations...

Beginning in January 2014, millions of Americans will enroll in health insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act. Some of these individuals were obtaining health care in safety net health clinics, emergency departments, or urgent care centers; many were going without needed care and will be new to the health care system. In addition to these newly insured, the ranks of older Americans and persons in need of chronic disease management will be on the rise. The way in which health care is delivered will have to change in order for the health care workforce to meet the demand for their services without sacrificing quality or access...

Interprofessional collaboration was essential for the conduct of research that demonstrated the effectiveness and significance of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in providing care, in reducing health care costs, and in developing innovative models of care for the nation's citizens. If the 2010 Affordable Care Act is to be implemented, APRNs, with their expertise and numbers, are essential to its implementation. Continued interdisciplinary collaboration is needed to expand the scope of APRN state practice regulations, to change reimbursement for APRN services, and to mute opposition to these changes by medical organizations...
