BACKGROUND: Tobacco use causes over eight million global deaths annually, with seven million directly attributed to tobacco use and 1.2 million to second hand smoke (SHS). Smoke-free environments are crucial to counter SHS. Although India banned smoking in public places in 2008, SHS exposure remains high. Studies have noted that limiting smoking in workplaces, restaurants, etc., helps to reduce overall smoking and reduce SHS exposure. Under this background, the study explores the linkages between smoke-free workplaces and living in smoke-free homes in India...

BACKGROUND: Children with medical complexity (CMC) comprise 1% of the paediatric population, but account for over 30% of health service costs. Lack of healthcare integration and coordination for CMC is well-documented. To address this, a deep understanding of local contextual factors, experiences, and family-identified needs is crucial. The aim of this research was to investigate the lived experiences of CMC, their families, and healthcare staff, focusing on understanding the dynamics of care coordination and the challenges faced in providing integrated care, in order to inform the development of effective, family-centred models of care...

Protected areas (PAs) are effective in mitigating human pressures, yet their future pressure alleviating effects remain unclear. In this study, we employed the ConvLSTM model to forecast the future human footprint and analyzed human pressure trends using Theil-Sen median and Mann-Kendall tests. We further evaluated the mitigating effects of PAs within their buffer zones (1-10 km) and the contributions of different IUCN categories of PAs to mitigating human pressure using linear regression models. The results indicate that by 2035, the average human pressure value is expected to increase by 11%, with trends exhibiting a polarized pattern...

RBC transfusions are a vital clinical therapy to treat anemic patients. The in vivo assessment of red blood cell (RBC) quality post-transfusion is critical to ensuring that the introduction of new RBC products meet established regulatory and clinical quality requirements. Although in vitro quality control testing is routinely performed by blood manufacturers, it is crucial that in vivo tests are performed during the evaluation and regulatory process of new RBC products. This article reviews existing in vivo techniques, like chromium-51 labelling and biotinylation, for determining the circulation and survival of RBCs, and advocates for a move to radiation-free methods...

Research in surgery faces intrinsic difficulties such as the lack of reproducibility of surgical operations, self-referring surgeons, decentralized data. Establishing a community of qualified researchers across surgeons is crucial. Clinical networks have been proposed as solutions to many challenges in surgical research, yet their implementation remains uncommon, especially for surgical trialists. The extent of literature produced by networks remains unclear, but fostering such collaborations could enhance the overall quality of surgical research...

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is crucial for significant weight reduction and treating obesity-related issues. However, the impact of gastrojejunostomy (GJ) anastomosis diameter on weight loss remains unclear. We investigate this influence on post-RYGB weight loss outcomes. A systematic search was conducted. Six studies met the inclusion criteria, showing varied GJ diameters and follow-up durations (1-5 years). Smaller GJ diameters generally correlated with greater short-to-medium-term weight loss, with a threshold beyond which complications like stenosis increased...

In the realm of medicinal chemistry, the primary objective is to swiftly optimize a multitude of chemical properties of a set of compounds to yield a clinical candidate poised for clinical trials. In recent years, two computational techniques, machine learning (ML) and physics-based methods, have evolved substantially and are now frequently incorporated into the medicinal chemist's toolbox to enhance the efficiency of both hit optimization and candidate design. Both computational methods come with their own set of limitations, and they are often used independently of each other...

Despite evidence demonstrating the risks of developing diabetes mellitus because of SARS-CoV-2, there is, however, insufficient scientific data available to elucidate the relationship between diabetes mellitus and COVID-19. Research indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with persistent damage to organ systems due to the systemic inflammatory response. Since COVID-19 is known to induce these conditions, further investigation is necessary to fully understand its long-term effects on human health. Consequently, it is essential to consider the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic when predicting the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the future, especially since the incidence of diabetes mellitus was already on the rise before the pandemic...

INTRODUCTION: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) presents substantial challenges in patient care due to its intricate multisystem nature, comorbidities, and global prevalence. The heterogeneity among patient populations, coupled with the absence of FDA-approved diagnostics and therapeutics, further complicates research into disease etiology and patient managment. Integrating longitudinal multi-omics data with clinical, health, textual, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical data offers a promising avenue to address these complexities, aiding in the identification of underlying causes and providing insights into effective therapeutics and diagnostic strategies...

Early induced therapeutic hypothermia represents the cornerstone treatment in neonates with probable hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The selection of patients for treatment usually involves meeting criteria indicating evidence of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia and the presence of moderate or severe encephalopathy. In this review, we highlight the variability that exists between some of the different regional and national eligibility guidelines. Determining the potential presence of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia may require either one, two or three signs amongst history of acute perinatal event, prolonged resuscitation at delivery, abnormal blood gases and low Apgar score, with a range of cutoff values...

De novo drug design aims to generate molecules from scratch that possess specific chemical and pharmacological properties. We present a computational approach utilizing interactome-based deep learning for ligand- and structure-based generation of drug-like molecules. This method capitalizes on the unique strengths of both graph neural networks and chemical language models, offering an alternative to the need for application-specific reinforcement, transfer, or few-shot learning. It enables the "zero-shot" construction of compound libraries tailored to possess specific bioactivity, synthesizability, and structural novelty...
