At the outbreak of World War II (WWII), anesthesiology was struggling to establish itself as a medical specialty. The battlefield abruptly exposed this young specialty to the formidable challenge of mass casualties, with an urgent need to provide proper fluid resuscitation, airway management, mechanical ventilation, and analgesia to thousands. But while Europe was suffering under the Nazi boot, anesthesia was preparing to rise to the challenge posed by the impending war. While war brings death and destruction, it also opens the way to medical advances...

The involvement of brainstem noradrenergic system in thermoregulation during exercise was evaluated by assessing the neuronal activation of A1, A2, locus coeruleus (LC) during exercise. Male Wistar rats weighing 280-330 g were used in the present study. Ninety minutes after exercise bout until fatigue, animals were anaesthesiated and brain removed and processed immunohistochemically for Fos protein and tyrosine hydroxylase in A1, A2 and LC and for Fos in POA subregions. Core and tail temperature were recorded during all running period by telemetry system...

Cardiac arrest is one of the major causes of death and disability. The aim of the study was to identify dynamic time-dependent metabolomic changes reflected in rat plasma induced by cerebral ischemia and reperfusion with the focus on the protective effect of ischemic preconditionig. Global cerebral ischemia in rats was induced by the four-vessel occlusion. Blood plasma was collected in three reperfusion times: an early post-acute 3 hr, then 24 hr, as an incipient time for delayed neuronal death induction and 72 hr as prolonged reperfusion period...

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of hip dislocations after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is 2-4% in Denmark. Patients with a dislocated THA are often elderly citizens with comorbidities and severe pain in the pre-reposition phase. Evidence as to which method of anaesthesia and airway management is best for hip relocation is lacking. The aim of this study was to determine how anaesthesiologists in Denmark provide anaesthesia for relocation of THAs, and if a local guideline is available. METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed by e-mail to all members of the Danish Association of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care and the Danish Society of Young Anaesthesiologists...

BACKGROUND: The safety of anticoagulation interruption in patients requiring surgical or invasive procedures remains unclear. We thus performed a systematic review and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomized studies (NRS). METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and Central databases were searched to March 2017 without date or language restrictions. We considered RCTs and NRS comparing anticoagulation interruption with any anticoagulation (continuation or heparin bridging) in adult surgical patients taking oral anticoagulation...

The decision to publish the journals Der Schmerz and Narkose und Anaesthesie in 1928 was an important step towards the professionalization of anaesthesiology in Germany. The appearance of both journals, which for economic reasons merged into Schmerz - Narkose - Anaesthesie 1 year later, was initiated and vehemently supported by Jewish physicians. As editors and co-editors they were deeply involved with the editorial tasks of the journals for years from the early beginnings. When the National Socialistic Party took over the government in Germany many of the Jewish colleagues were forced to quit their editorial tasks, were eliminated and replaced by "Arians", they were persecuted and often arrested, forced to emigrate or decided to commit suicide due to inhumane personal circumstances...

The frequency of operative interventions, performed according to the "one-day" stationary technology is raising every day. The patients are choosed in accordance with conventional methods, while somatic state of a patient and the further operation volume playing the leading role. But in 30% of patients in the early postoperative period and in 10.4% in the late postopeartive period the high psychic functions disorders occur, which are called postoperative cognitive dysfunction. The investigation is devoted to studying of character and speed of restoration of psychophysiologic functions after application of various general anaesthesy in conditions of the "one-day" stationary...

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is now commonly performed for chronic rhinosinusitis therapy. The surgery is necessary when symptoms of sinusitis persist after maximal medical treatment. Apart from anatomic and technical issues the main difference between adult and pediatric FESS is related to postoperative care. In earlier reports a second-look endoscopy in general anaesthesia was recommended to inspect, debride and clean the operative site in young patients...

Several common situations in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) farming, such as air exposure, crowding and the use of anaesthetics, have been demonstrated to be stressful. In the present study, these conditions were simulated in the laboratory, after which head-kidney natural cytotoxic cell (NCC) activity was evaluated. For this, several specimens were air exposed for 2 min, returned to the aquarium and sampled from 0 to 4 days after exposure. NCC activity was significantly lower on the day following air-exposure compared with the control (rested fish) but not at any other time studied...

Of Prostin 15 M-1 ml. (250 mg Carboprost) were used deeply muscular, intracervical or intramyometrial, by 51 patients with postpartal hypotony. The most common risk factors associated with the development of postpartal haemorrhage are PIH, prolonged labour, the general anaesthesis and higli multiparity. Kerathoprosthesis application is limited to strictly definite indications such as: after a severe corneal scald, after repeated graft rejections or temporarily just before the intricate eye operation to expose the posterior segment. Considerable progress in this province has been observed since PMMA were introduced. Recently a new successful method of "champagne cork" kerathoprosthesis, described firstly by Worst, has been reported. It is designed as a reverse cone and in comparison with other models provides significantly wider range of vision and simultaneuosly better visibility of fundus, which are the main advantages of this prosthesis...

BACKGROUND: Autofluorescence bronchoscopy (AB) enhances the bronchoscopist's ability to diagnose bronchial preneoplastic lesions and early cancer. We undertook a study to assess its feasibility and performance under local anaesthesia on a real ambulatory mode. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients at very high risk for lung cancer were prospectively studied by AB under local anaesthesia, without any sedation. Lidocaine doses, time, oxygen saturation, peak expiratory flow (PEF) and the number of cough episodes were measured...
