Taking medical history, physical examination, and performing some in vivo and in vitro tests are necessary for the diagnosis of allergy. Skin prick test (SPT) is considered as the standard method and first-line approach for the detection of allergic sensitization. Although mainly SPT is used for the detection of allergic sensitization, intradermal skin test (IDST) may be necessary, especially in patients with a negative SPT result. IDST is quite safe; however, is nowadays seldom used for detection of inhalant allergy and its value remains controversial...

X-ray tomography is a powerful tool giving access to the morphology of biofilms, in 3D porous media, at the mesoscale. Due to the high water content of biofilms, the attenuation coefficient of biofilms and water are very close, hindering the distinction between biofilms and water without the use of contrast agents. Until now, the use of contrast agents such as barium sulfate, silver-coated micro-particles or 1-chloronaphtalene added to the liquid phase allowed imaging the biofilm 3D morphology. However, these contrast agents are not passive and potentially interact with the biofilm when injected into the sample...

Five new mixed-metal borates, namely, K2BaB16O26, K3CsB20O32, Na2Cs2BaB18O30, Na2Rb2PbB18O30, and Na2Cs2PbB18O30 were synthesized using the high-temperature solution method. Those structures were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and the B-O configurations of them are shown to feature complicated three-dimensional (3D) open-framework structures with different types of channels. For all the five compounds, the frameworks can be reduced into four-connected (4-c) uninodal net with sra-, dia- and nbo-type topology by assigning the [B5O10]5- and [B3O7]5- clusters as basic nodes...

Increased synthesis of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) occurs in prokaryotes and eukaryotes in response to physiological, environmental, and chemical exposures, thus allowing the cell survival from fatal conditions. Hsp70 cytoprotective properties may be clarified by its anti-apoptotic function. Boron has been reported to play an essential role in various organ developments and metabolisms. However, it is not known if boron is also able to modulate the Hsp70. In the present study, the actions of boron on ostrich spleen and expression level of Hsp70 were investigated...

Molecular piezoelectrics are highly desirable for their easy and environment-friendly processing, light weight, low processing temperature, and mechanical flexibility. However, although 136 years have passed since the discovery in 1880 of the piezoelectric effect, molecular piezoelectrics with a piezoelectric coefficient d33 comparable with piezoceramics such as barium titanate (BTO; ~190 picocoulombs per newton) have not been found. We show that trimethylchloromethyl ammonium trichloromanganese(II), an organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectric crystal processed from aqueous solution, has a large d33 of 185 picocoulombs per newton and a high phase-transition temperature of 406 kelvin (K) (16 K above that of BTO)...

The mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier (AAC) is a membrane transporter that exchanges a cytosolic ADP for a matrix ATP. Atomic structures in an outward-facing (OF) form which binds an ADP from the intermembrane space have been solved by X-ray crystallography, and revealed their unique pseudo three-fold symmetry fold which is qualitatively different from pseudo two-fold symmetry of most transporters of which atomic structures have been solved. However, any atomic-level information on an inward-facing (IF) form, which binds an ATP from the matrix side and is fixed by binding of an inhibitor, bongkrekic acid (BA), is not available, and thus its alternating access mechanism for the transport process is unknown...

The leaf spotting diseases in wheat that include Septoria tritici blotch (STB) caused by , Stagonospora nodorum blotch (SNB) caused by , and tan spot (TS) caused by pose challenges to breeding programs in selecting for resistance. A promising approach that could enable selection prior to phenotyping is genomic selection that uses genome-wide markers to estimate breeding values (BVs) for quantitative traits. To evaluate this approach for seedling and/or adult plant resistance (APR) to STB, SNB, and TS, we compared the predictive ability of least-squares (LS) approach with genomic-enabled prediction models including genomic best linear unbiased predictor (GBLUP), Bayesian ridge regression (BRR), Bayes A (BA), Bayes B (BB), Bayes Cπ (BC), Bayesian least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (BL), and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces markers (RKHS-M), a pedigree-based model (RKHS-P) and RKHS markers and pedigree (RKHS-MP)...

In this study, we present a valence states modulation strategy for picomole level assay of Hg(2+) using directional self-assembly of gold nanorods (AuNRs) as signal readout. Hg(2+) ions are first controllably reduced to Hg(+) ions by appropriate ascorbic acid, and the reduced Hg(+) ions react with the tips of the preadded AuNRs and form gold amalgam. Such Hg(+) decorated AuNRs then end-to-end self-assemble into one-dimensional architectures by the bridging effects of lysine based on the high affinity of NH2-Hg(+) interactions...
