In Japan, we are permitted to own fire arms only for hunting and clay pigeon shooting, but gunshot wound victims have neen rarely seen due to the strict laws against owing guns, and the lack of related crimes. Therefore, surgeons should be familiar with ballistics, practical gunshot wound management, and the possibility of delayed lead poisoning ssociated with bullet residue. A 69-year-old man was brought to our hospital because he was accidentally shot by his companion's shotgun during hunting. On admission, although he had stable vital sign and multiple gunshot wounds on his right forearm and femur, chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) revealed a few of bullets and its flagments on his back, into spleen and pericardium...

The activities of the Bambino Gesù Paediatric Clinical and Surgical Centre Takeo in Cambodia started in May 2006, after the signature of a formal agreement between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the hospital. The paediatric centre is currently composed of an out-patients section with diagnostic ultrasound facilities and an obstetrics and gynaecology section, 3 consulting rooms, 20 beds for clinical activities, 13 beds for surgery, 7 beds for the paediatric intensive care unit, 2 dressing rooms, 1 out-patients sterile section, a library for off- and on-line consultation, a playroom and laundry facilities, and an administration office...

Beading and Boxing of impression is taught in most dental colleges. The boxing procedure is crucial step to preserve the details of the final impression especially of the vestibular area. This article describes an alternative beading-boxing procedure that is compatible with all impression materials, is efficient, simple, inexpensive, and practicable. Use of commercially available instant adhesive around the border to act as a joining agent between elastic impressions and beading wax or bead made up of base plate wax is advocated in this technique...

To evaluate the null hypothesis of no difference in degree of pain or stiffness between patients with partial- and full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff, we measured pain and stiffness in a cohort of consecutive patients who underwent arthroscopy for rotator cuff-related conditions. Pain was measured with a visual analogue scale, and range of motion was measured with a goniometer. Included in the study were 410 shoulders (410 patients), of which 214 had no tear, 66 had articular-sided partial-thickness tears, and 83 had single-tendon full-thickness tears...

Discovery, evaluation, and understanding the biological relevance of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their associated phenotypes is relevant to many applications, including human disease diagnostics, pathogen detection, and identification of genetic traits impacting agricultural practices, both in terms of food quality and production efficiency. Validation of putative SNP associations in large-scale cohorts is currently impeded by the technical challenges and high cost inherent in analyzing large numbers of samples using available SNP genotyping platforms...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL
R G C Pennington, N J Bottomley, D Neen, H C Brownlow
PURPOSE: To determine whether increasing age is associated with increased radiological features of osteoarthritis of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) in a general population, and whether clinical symptoms correlate with radiological features. METHODS: Anteroposterior and axillary shoulder radiographs of 240 patients aged 20 to 80 years were randomly selected. The presence of stigmata of osteoarthritis of the ACJ including sclerosis, cysts, lysis, and osteophytes were recorded, and the width of the ACJ was measured...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective case controlled study to compare the clinical and radiographic performance of Healos soaked in bone marrow aspirate (BMA) to iliac crest autograft when used in lumbar spinal fusion. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the null hypothesis: Healos used with BMA is not an effective alternative to iliac crest autograft in lumbar spine fusions. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Healos (a Type 1 collagen/hydroxyapatite matrix) is osteoconductive and when soaked for at least 20 minutes in BMA becomes osteoinductive...

AIM: To test the observation that the incidence of trampoline related pediatric fractures is increasing-both nationally and in a large district general hospital. METHOD: A retrospective analysis was undertaken of patient records establishing mechanism of injury of pediatric fractures over three consecutive summers from 2000-03. Theatre records of fractures treated operatively were used as the initial data source. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in trampoline related injuries was discovered...

Haplotype-based methods offer a powerful approach to disease gene mapping, based on the association between causal mutations and the ancestral haplotypes on which they arose. As part of The SNP Consortium Allele Frequency Projects, we characterized haplotype patterns across 51 autosomal regions (spanning 13 megabases of the human genome) in samples from Africa, Europe, and Asia. We show that the human genome can be parsed objectively into haplotype blocks: sizable regions over which there is little evidence for historical recombination and within which only a few common haplotypes are observed...

Adaptive behaviour of 58 male mice of BALB/c line was studied (10 experimental sessions) in a multialternative maze (180 positive decisions) at various levels of alimentary excitation, after 0--12--24--36 hours of starvation. It has been found that such characteristics of the brain integrative activity as power, speed and rate of the development of motor information processing (estimated by dynamics of formation of correct decisions) are in direct dependency on the level of alimentary excitation. The suggestion is discussed that the level of concrete physiological neens represents both an "energiator" of the brain activity and its directing and organizing determinant...

Twenty-one patients of laryngeal cancer (T2, T3) were treated with Twice-A-Day fractionation radiotherapy (TADF) between April, 1986 and December, 1987. Tumor control and mucosal reaction were evaluated to compare with effects between TADF and Conventional fractionation radiotherapy (CF). Methods of TADF were 1.2-1.5 Gy per fraction, two fractions per day with a minimum interval of 6 Hr., 5 days a week and 66-72 Gy for total dose. In CF, they were 1.8-2.0 Gy per fraction, one fraction per day, 5 days a week and 60-70 Gy for total dose...
