AIM: Conduction of vasomotor responses may contribute to long-term regulation of resistance artery function and structure. Most previous studies have addressed conduction of vasoactivity only during very brief stimulations. We developed a novel setup that allows the local pharmacological stimulation of arteries in vitro for extended periods of time, and studied the conduction of vasomotor responses in rat mesenteric arteries under those conditions. METHODS: The new in vitro set up was based on the pressure myograph...

I first met Ulf Svante von Euler when he came to Belgrade, in 1968, to attend an international symposium on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Medical Faculty. I was at that time a graduate student at the Medical Faculty in Sarajevo, and a new researcher. I had finished medical school in Belgrade and had worked for two years as a physician in the northern part of Serbia. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of sudden death in the world. The etiology of sudden cardiac death involves a wide range of diseases, but seldom pericardial cysts. A pericardial cyst is an uncommon cyst usually located in the middle mediastinum and rarely in the posterior part. They are usually harmless and asymptomatic. Here, we present a case of a 63-year-old woman who presented with dyspnea and hoarseness, but died suddenly after a CT scan was attempted. The detailed forensic pathologic and histologic examination revealed a pericardial cyst located in the posterior mediastinum...

Quantifying the amount of cortical bone loss is one variable used in histological methods of adult age estimation. Measurements of cortical area tend to be subjective and additional information regarding bone loss is not captured considering cancellous bone is disregarded. We describe whether measuring bone area (cancellous + cortical area) rather than cortical area may improve histological age estimation for the sixth rib. Mid-shaft rib cross-sections (n = 114) with a skewed sex distribution were analyzed...

Advances in technologies including development of smartphone features have contributed to the growth of mobile applications, including dating apps. However, online dating services can be misused. To support law enforcement investigations, a forensic taxonomy that provides a systematic classification of forensic artifacts from Windows Phone 8 (WP8) dating apps is presented in this study. The taxonomy has three categories, namely: Apps Categories, Artifacts Categories, and Data Partition Categories. This taxonomy is built based on the findings from a case study of 28 mobile dating apps, using mobile forensic tools...

Self-driving vehicles (SDVs) promise to considerably reduce traffic crashes. One pressing concern facing the public, automakers, and governments is "How safe is safe enough for SDVs?" To answer this question, a new expressed-preference approach was proposed for the first time to determine the socially acceptable risk of SDVs. In our between-subject survey (N = 499), we determined the respondents' risk-acceptance rate of scenarios with varying traffic-risk frequencies to examine the logarithmic relationships between the traffic-risk frequency and risk-acceptance rate...

Somnophilia, the desire to have sex with an unconscious, sleeping, or comatose person who is unable to respond, is a sexual paraphilia that is seldom reported. The underlying desire is often overshadowed by the act of sexual violation and when using GHB or GBL to induce unconsciousness, as in the case presented here, the victim might not even be able to recall, for certain, that they have been sexually violated. A case study is offered of a somnophile who adulterated drinks to render young men unconscious, so he could rape them in that state, before progressing to administering drugs anally on the pretext of applying lubrication to the anus to facilitate sexual intercourse...

BACKGROUND:  Contact dermatitis (CD) is a frequently occurring medical condition, for which Vinca minor (VM) is one of the recommended homeopathic medicines. However, the symptoms indicating this medicine have not yet been assessed systematically. Likelihood ratio (LR), based on Bayesian statistics, may yield better estimation of a medicine's indication than the existing method of entry of symptoms into materia medica and repertories. METHODS:  We investigated LRs of four CD symptoms of VM: (1) great sensitiveness of skin, with redness and soreness from slightest rubbing; (2) weeping eczema with foul, thick crusts; (3) itching amelioration in open air; and (4) CD of scalp...

INTRODUCTION:  West syndrome (WS) is a devastating epileptic encephalopathy with substantial mortality. After a study by Riikonen in 1996, further data on mortality and prognostic factors for survival has been scarce. We aimed to study mortality in patients with WS and identify prognostic factors for survival. METHODS:  We performed a single-center retrospective study in a tertiary referral clinic (Erasmus University Hospital/Sophia Children's Hospital). This study obtained data from deceased patients regarding the age of death and cause of death...

Congenital myasthenic syndromes (CMS) are neuromuscular transmission disorders caused by mutations in genes encoding neuromuscular junction proteins. CMS due to choline acetyltransferase (CHAT) gene is characterized by episodic apnea. We report a case of a 12-month-old female patient presented with recurrent episodic apnea carrying a mutation in CHAT gene, p.I336T. Furthermore, we describe the genetic and clinical findings in 44 CMS patients due to CHAT mutations in the literature up to date. Episodes of apnea and respiratory insufficiency are the hallmarks of CHAT mutations...

Most studies concerning to tendon healing and incorporation into bone are mainly based on animal studies due to the invasive nature of the biopsy procedure. The evidence considering tendon graft healing to bone in humans is limited in several case series or case reports, and therefore, it is difficult to understand the healing process. A computerized search using relevant search terms was performed in the PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases, as well as a manual search of reference lists. Searches were limited to studies that investigated tendon graft healing to bone by histologic examination after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with hamstring...

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has gained growing popularity over the last decades. The posterior tibial slope (PTS) has been shown to play a significant role for knee biomechanics and is thought to be crucial for clinical function of the UKA. We evaluated the clinical outcome at mid-term follow-up after UKA. Furthermore, the reconstruction of the individual PTS was analyzed. A total of 91 consecutive patients undergoing medial UKA for osteoarthritis were included. Patients were contacted by telephone for a survival analysis at a minimum of 30 months after surgery...

BACKGROUND Increasing the success rate of in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) is a duty of clinicians that has made many seek a variety of protocols. This study was undertaken to use a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to define the alterations of follicular fluid (FF) lipid metabolites in patients undergoing progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) compared with short-term protocol, revealing potential correlations between the differentially expressed lipids and ameliorative clinical outcomes...

OBJECTIVE: Introduction:The level of people's health and its preservation is a medical problem that requires the optimal solution and the need to improve the management of the system of measures to achieve the goal. According to specialists, the health of Ukrainian people is accompanied by high mortality, significant parameters of disability and morbidity and a decrease in the average life expectancy. Diseases that lead to such negative medical and social and socio-economic consequences are so-called "illnesses of a way of life" or "diseases of civilization"...

Protection of maternal health as well as protection of fetal and newborn health is a strategic objective in all countries. It ensures the formation of healthy generation as the basis of gene pool preservation and further development of the nation. It is known that the progress of critical conditions in newborns is different from classical concepts. Аnatomicofunctional features of the newborns (especially premature newborns), the effect of prenatal pathological factors are provocative and background factors of the multiorgan failure syndrome begining in these patients, which probably affects frequency of appearance of this syndrome, the mechanisms of development, clinical manifestations, the final of the disease and makes doctors to consider newborns in critical conditions as high-risk group for multiorgan failure syndrome appearance...

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: The number of elderly people in society is increasing. Alike in all European countries, ageing population in Ukraine is observed, which affects the structure and dynamics of morbidity and mortality of the population towards the increase of chronic non-communicable diseases, which is the epidemic of the 21st century civilization. In 2010 in Ukraine, the proportion of people over the age of 60 was 20.6% of the total. The prevalence of all diseases among the elderly in 2010 amounted to 283522,8, and among the general population - 186746,4...
