Background: Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is the treatment of choice for end stage liver disease. Many studies show an inverse relationship between the number of procedures and operative mortality. Objective: The objective of the study is to show the results of our center and determine if it can have comparable results to high volumen centers. Method: This is a retrospective study which analyzed the information of patients with OLT at our institution from 1985 to December 31, 2012...

Eggs are a highly nutritive food. They contain high quality protein and several nutrients with potential health benefi ts. Nevertheless, the appearance of cardiovascular disease as an important public health issue, with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide, along with the identifi cation of high blood cholesterol levels as a risk factor for this disease, was responsible for the advice to limit dietary cholesterol (and, therefore, eggs) that was promoted by health care professionals and institutions during the 70s...

Methods: randomized controlled clinical trial at a Primary Health Care Service, involving three groups: EG (educative session and test demonstration), BG (recall ribbon) and standard intervention (card containing the return appointment - graphical reminder), called comparative group here (CG). To select the sample, the following was established: having started sexual activity and undergoing the pap smear during the study, resulting in 775 women...

OBJECTIVE: To describe the physiological pattern of gestational plasma volume adjustments in normal singleton pregnancy and compare this with the pattern in pregnancies complicated by pregnancy-induced hypertension, pre-eclampsia or fetal growth restriction. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis of the current literature on plasma volume adjustments during physiological and complicated pregnancies. Literature was retrieved from PubMed (NCBI) and EMBASE (Ovid) databases...

BACKGROUND: Main causes of death in chronic Chagas' cardiomyopathy (CChC) are progressive congestive heart failure and sudden cardiac death. Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) have been proved an effective therapy to prevent sudden death in patients with CChC. Identification of predictors of sudden death remains a challenge. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether surface fragmented ECG (fQRS) helps identifying patients with CChC and ICDs at higher risk of presenting appropriate ICD therapies...

Many words have more than one meaning, and these meanings vary in their degree of relatedness. In the present experiment, we examined whether this degree of relatedness is influenced by whether or not the two meanings share a translation in a bilingual's other language. Native English speakers with Spanish as a second language (i.e., English-Spanish bilinguals) and native Spanish speakers with English as a second language (i.e., Spanish-English bilinguals) were presented with pairs of phrases instantiating different senses of ambiguous English words (e...

Somewhat more than 5 million foreigners reside in Spain; they make up 11.3% of the total population, their presence implies an increase in the cultural diversity of the people who make use of public health services. By means of a descriptive quantitative study which used interviews, we have been able to discover the attitudes towards immigration which nursing professionals in the three public hospitals in the province of Almeria hold; and to analyze whether or not significant differences exist among them. After analyzing the results of more than 200 questionnaires collected, we can conclude that there are few clearly positive or negative attitudes while almost 75% of this sample show moderate attitudes and there are no statistically significant differences based on work place; therefore, we can suppose that the percentage of foreigners attended to does not determine the attitude toward immigration by personnel in each hospital...
