BACKGROUND: There is a significant need for a targeted therapy for essential tremor (ET), as medications have not been developed specifically for ET, and the ones prescribed are often not well-tolerated, so that many patients remain untreated. Recent work has shown that, unlike previous experience, kinematically guided individualized botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections provide benefit along with minimal weakness. Ours is the first long-term (96-week) safety and efficacy study of BoNT-A as monotherapy for ET using kinematically driven injection parameters...

Long-term testosterone replacement therapy is mainly monitored by trough levels of serum testosterone (S-T), while urinary testosterone (U-T) is used by forensic toxicology to evaluate testosterone doping. Testosterone in saliva (Sal-T) may provide additional information and simplify the sample collection. We aimed to investigate the relationships between testosterone measured in saliva, serum and urine during standard treatment with 1,000 mg testosterone undecanoate (TU) every 12th week during 1 year. This was an observational study...

OBJECTIVE: Full thickness skin models are comprised of a three dimensional dermal equivalent based on an animal derived collagen matrix that harbours fibroblasts and an epidermal equivalent formed by keratinocytes. The functionality of both equivalents is influenced by many factors, including extracellular matrix composition and resident cell type. Animal-derived collagens differ in amino acid composition and physico-chemical properties from human collagens. This composition could alter the functionality of the dermal equivalent and epidermal morphogenesis with the barrier formation in full thickness models (FTMs)...

Several groups of birds have convergently evolved the ability to swim using their feet despite facing trade-offs with walking. However, swimming relative to terrestrial performance varies across these groups. Highly specialized divers, such as loons and grebes, excel at swimming underwater but struggle to stand on land, whereas species that primarily swim on the water surface, such as Mallards, retain the ability to move terrestrially. The identification of skeletal features associated with a swimming style and conserved across independent groups suggests that the hindlimb of foot-propelled swimming birds has adapted to suit the physical challenges of producing propulsive forces underwater...

This study investigated the fractal dynamic properties of stride time (ST), stride length (SL) and stride speed (SS) during walking on a self-paced treadmill (STM) in which the belt speed is automatically controlled by the walking speed. Twelve healthy young subjects participated in the study. The subjects walked at their preferred walking speed under four conditions: STM, STM with a metronome (STM+met), fixed-speed (conventional) treadmill (FTM), and FTM with a metronome (FTM+met). To compare the fractal dynamics between conditions, the mean, variability, and fractal dynamics of ST, SL, and SS were compared...

Voices convey important social information about an individual's identity, including gender. This is especially relevant to transgender individuals, who cite voice alteration as a primary goal of the gender alignment process. Although the voice is a primary target of testosterone therapy among female-to-male (FTM) trans people, little research has explored the effects of such changes on their psychological well-being. Here, we investigated how FTMs' vocal gender related to their well-being. A total of 77 FTMs (M age = 25...

Background: Mastectomy, referred to here as "Top Surgery," is an important surgical step for female-to-male (FTM) transgender patients. The goal is to excise breast tissue and create a masculine chest contour. Despite the rising demand for Top Surgery, debate still exists regarding how to select the most appropriate surgical technique to optimize aesthetic outcomes safely. Objectives: To determine the safety profile and aesthetic outcome of one surgeon's 15-year FTM Top Surgery experience...

Angiogenesis is a complex, highly regulated process responsible for providing and maintaining adequate tissue perfusion. Insufficient vasculature maintenance and pathological malformations can result in severe ischemic diseases, while overly abundant vascular development is associated with cancer and inflammatory disorders. A promising form of pro-angiogenic therapy is the use of angiogenic cell sources, which can provide regulatory factors as well as physical support for newly developing vasculature. Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSCs) are extensively investigated candidates for vascular regeneration due to their paracrine effects and their ability to detect and home to ischemic or inflamed tissues...

Upregulation of the hepatic endocannabinoid (EC) receptor [cannabinoid receptor-1 (CB1)] and arachidonoylethanolamide (AEA) is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Male mice fed high-fat diet (HFD) ad libitum also exhibit NAFLD, increased hepatic AEA, and obesity. But, preference for HFD complicates interpretation and almost nothing is known about these effects in females. These issues were addressed by pair-feeding HFD. Similarly to ad libitum-fed HFD, pair-fed HFD also increased WT male and female mouse fat tissue mass (FTM), but preferentially at the expense of lean tissue mass...

BACKGROUND: Drawing Archimedes spirals is a popular and valid method of assessing action tremor in the upper limbs. We performed the first blinded comparison of Fahn-Tolosa-Marín (FTM) ratings and tablet measures of essential tremor to determine if a digitizing tablet is better than 0-4 ratings in detecting changes in essential tremor that exceed random variability in tremor amplitude. METHODS: The large and small spirals of FTM were drawn with each hand on two consecutive days by 14 men and four women (age 60±8...

Transsexualism in the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision), Gender Dysphoria in adolescents and adults in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition), is characterized by a marked incongruence between one's experienced gender and biological sex. The etiology is complex, but some hypotheses suggest that Gender Dysphoria (GD) arises from discrepant cerebral and biological sexual differentiation. Increasing evidence supports the idea of genetic vulnerability...

INTRODUCTION: Gender dysphoria is defined as one's belief that his/her body does not reflect his/her true "inner" identification of physical sex and requires medical and/or surgical treatment that will alter his/her body to better reflect what he/she believes is his/her true gender. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to describe current surgical techniques available in genital reconstruction for female-to-male (FTM) and male-to-female (MTF) transgender patients. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed recently published papers concerning the most common procedures in genital reconstruction in FTM transgenders and in MTF transgenders...

We demonstrate the feasibility of estimating clinical tremor scores using an eating utensil with motion-sensing and tremor-cancellation technology in thirteen patients with tremor. Three experts scored hand tremor using the modified Fahn- Tolosa-Marin (FTM) scale. A linear model was trained to estimate tremor severity using the recorded motion signals. The average neurologist FTM score was 1.6±0.7 for PD and 2.6±0.7 for ET patients. The average model score was 1.6±0.7 for PD and 2.6±0.6 for ET. Correlation coefficient between the clinical and model tremor scores was 0...

BACKGROUND: Disease assessment for recurrent glioblastoma (GBM) represents a challenge, especially with the use of antiangiogenic agents. Moreover, validated neuroradiological predictors of outcome are lacking. Recently, the concept of early tumor shrinkage (ETS) has been developed to better assess the ability of treatments in determining a rapid and remarkable tumor response. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of ETS in predicting survival of GBM patients treated with BEV...

BACKGROUND: In computed tomography colonography images, electronic cleansing (EC) is applied to remove opacified residual materials, called fecal-tagging materials (FTM), using positive-contrast tagging agents and laxative to facilitate polyp detection. METHODS: The proposed EC, EC prop , integrates the gradient directional second derivative into material fraction model to preserve submerged soft tissue (ST) under FTM. Three-material fraction model is used to remove FTM and artifacts at air-tagging (AT) layers and T-junctions where air, ST, and FTM material meet simultaneously...

Various techniques have been used to detect crystallization in amorphous solid dispersions (ASD). However, most of these techniques do not enable the detection of very low levels of crystallinity (<1%). The aim of the current study was to compare the sensitivity of second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy with powder X-ray diffraction (XRPD) in detecting the presence of crystals in low drug loading amorphous solid dispersions. Amorphous solid dispersions of the poorly water soluble compounds, flutamide (FTM, 15wt...
