The diagnosis of an osteochondroma in the short bones of the extremities is atypical and the presentation in infancy is unusual. A 3-month-old female presented for evaluation of radial deviation of the right index finger present since birth. Radiographs showed a broad-based osseous outgrowth with the usual features of an osteochondroma arising from the base of middle phalanx. Initial corrective surgery at 22 months was followed by recurrence of the lesion. Another resection at 4 years confirmed a final diagnosis of BPOP (bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation)...

BACKGROUND: Iodine nutrition is critical for fetal neurodevelopment in the first trimester of pregnancy, a period associated with dramatic changes in thyroid function. The aim of this study was to evaluate iodine nutritional status and thyroid function reference ranges in the first trimester in Taiwan. METHODS: Pregnant women aged 20 years and above in the first trimester were recruited in Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan from March 2019 to July 2022. Each participant provided a spot urine sample for measurement of urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and a blood sample for check-up of thyroid function and thyroid autoantibodies...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential impacts of optimizing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapid antigen test (RAT) self-testing diagnostic accuracy information. DESIGN: Online randomized experiment using hypothetical scenarios: in scenarios 1 to 3 (RAT result positive), the posttest probability was considered to be very high (likely true positives), and in scenarios 4 and 5 (RAT result negative), the posttest probability was considered to be moderately high (likely false negatives)...

PURPOSE: The effectiveness of prospective motion correction (PMC) is often evaluated by comparing artifacts in images acquired with and without PMC (NoPMC). However, such an approach is not applicable in clinical setting due to unavailability of NoPMC images. We aim to develop a simulation approach for demonstrating the ability of fat-navigator-based PMC in improving perivascular space (PVS) visibility in T2 -weighted MRI. METHODS: MRI datasets from two earlier studies were used for motion artifact simulation and evaluating PMC, including T2 -weighted NoPMC and PMC images...

INTRODUCTION: Myopia is causing a major public health concern, with its prevalence increasing globally. This study aimed to discuss posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) research publication trends and hotspots over the past 20 years. METHODS: Bibliometric analysis was performed using the Web Science Core Collection to investigate posterior-chamber pIOL research publication trends. The extracted records were analyzed, and a knowledge map was built using VOSviewer v...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: No recovery related surveillance system exists but given the evidence of effectiveness and growing supply, a house- and resident- level recovery house (RH) surveillance system could be beneficial for data collection on recovery support service (RSS) engagement, and retention; for improved standardization of RH programs and services; and for identification of outcomes associated with long-term recovery. METHODS: This study aimed to explore current data collection practices at the resident- and house- level through qualitative focus interviews of RH representatives...

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common inflammatory skin disease caused by delayed hypersensitivity to chemical and biotic contact allergens. ACD significantly affects the patients' quality of life negatively impacting both occupational and non-occupational settings. Patch testing is the gold standard diagnostic in vivo test to precise the ACD etiology and to correctly perform prevention. According to the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) legislative decree no. 178 of 29th May 1991, allergens are defined as medicines and therefore they are subject to strict regulation...

PURPOSE: Widening the availability of fetal MRI with fully automatic real-time planning of radiological brain planes on 0.55T MRI. METHODS: Deep learning-based detection of key brain landmarks on a whole-uterus echo planar imaging scan enables the subsequent fully automatic planning of the radiological single-shot Turbo Spin Echo acquisitions. The landmark detection pipeline was trained on over 120 datasets from varying field strength, echo times, and resolutions and quantitatively evaluated...

PURPOSE: MRI using 3D stack-of-spirals (SoS) readout on a high-performance gradient system is subject to strong second-order, spatially varying concomitant fields, which can lead to signal dropout and blurring artifacts that become more significant at locations farther from the gradient isocenter. A method for compensating for second-order concomitant fields in 3D axial SoS image reconstruction is described. METHODS: We retrospectively correct for second-order concomitant field-induced phase error in the 3D SoS data by slice-dependent k-space phase compensation based on the nominal spiral readout trajectories...

PURPOSE: CEST can image macromolecules/compounds via detecting chemical exchange between labile protons and bulk water. B1 field inhomogeneity impairs CEST quantification. Conventional B1 inhomogeneity correction methods depend on interpolation algorithms, B1 choices, acquisition number or calibration curves, making reliable correction challenging. This study proposed a novel B1 inhomogeneity correction method based on a direct saturation (DS) removed omega plot model. METHODS: Four healthy volunteers underwent B1 field mapping and CEST imaging under four nominal B1 levels of 0...

PURPOSE: Breast density is a significant risk factor for breast cancer and can impact the sensitivity of screening mammography. Area-based breast density measurements may not provide an accurate representation of the tissue distribution, therefore volumetric breast density (VBD) measurements are preferred. Dual-energy mammography enables volumetric measurements without additional assumptions about breast shape. In this work we evaluated the performance of a dual-energy decomposition technique for determining VBD by applying it to virtual anthropomorphic phantoms...

INTRODUCTION: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is fundamental to improve the outcomes of a life-threatening event. The correct knowledge of first aid actions to provide may guarantee the victim's survival. This study was aimed at evaluating the competence about cardiopulmonary resuscitation and its predictors in a sample of Italian undergraduate students. METHODS: Information on socio-demographic characteristics, first aid training, knowledge of stroke and heart attack symptoms and perceived ability to provide first aid, were collected through a web-based questionnaire...
