Corydalis Thizoma,or Yuanhu in China, is a common herbal drug used for thousands of years as analgesic in Chinese medicine that has been reported to have potential anti-angiogenic effects. In this study, a VEGFR/cell membrane chromatography (VEGFR/CMC) coupled with HPLC- ESI-IT-TOF-MSn system was developed and successfully applied for identifying active components from YuanHu extract acting on VEGFR. We identified tetrahydropalmatine and corydaline as bioactive components with VEGFR activity, thus confirming their inhibitory activity on VEGFR engineered HEK293 cell growth by MTT assay...

Periplocoside A (PSA) has been extracted from the Chinese herbal medicine Periplocasepium Bge to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) via immune regulation. We previously found that PSA exhibits immunosuppressive activity both in vitro and in vivo. Balanced regulation of helper T 17 (Th17)/regulatory T (Treg) cells is the current therapeutic direction for the treatment of RA. The present study investigated the mechanism of PSA in treating collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). The therapeutic effects and potential pharmacological mechanisms of PSA were specifically clarified by examining its effects on CIA in DBA/1 mice...

Breast cancer is the most common carcinoma in women. Comprehensive therapy on breast cancer including surgical operation, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, endocrinotherapy, etc. could help, but still has serious side effect and resistance against anticancer drugs. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) may avoid these problems, in which traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been highlighted. In this section, to analyze the mechanism through which TCM act on breast cancer, we have built a virtual model consisting of the construction of database, oral bioavailability prediction, drug-likeness evaluation, target prediction, network construction...

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used in Chinese society for more than 5,000 years to treat diseases from inflammation to cancer. Here, we report the case of nine living AIDS patients in the age range of 51 to 67 who were treated with either a unique formula of TCM alone from 2001 to 2009 or the TCM from 2001 to 2006 and then switched to occasional antiretroviral therapy. Surprisingly, the viral loads of eight patients were at undetectable levels on June 28, 2016 while the remaining patient had a low viral load of 29 copies/ml...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe, chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with memory and cognition impairment ultimately leading to death. It is the commonest reason of dementia in elderly populations mostly affecting beyond the age of 65. The pathogenesis is indicated by accumulation of the amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in brain tissues and hyperphosphorylation of tau protein in neurons. The main cause is considered to be the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to oxidative stress...

Chinese traditional medicine, Nijutsuto, is used to treat patients with frozen shoulder and osteoarthritis. Herbal medicine is often linked to the development of interstitial lung disease. An 83-year-old Japanese man with osteoarthritis who was on Nijutsuto was admitted to our hospital with dyspnoea and severe cough after 2 weeks from initiation of Nijutsuto. A chest computed tomography scan on admission showed diffuse ground glass opacity with traction bronchiectasis. Thus, he was diagnosed with Nijutsuto-induced interstitial lung disease, and was treated with a high dose of methylprednisolone and cyclophosphamide...
