Understanding the complex vascular anatomy of the lesser pelvis is vital in diagnostics and management of numerous pathologies in gynaecology, urology, orthopaedics and general surgery. The following case reports describes an unusual, undescribed branching pattern of the internal iliac artery with additional specific branches, as well as an unprecedented supernumerary internal iliac vein. Both clinical significance and embryology of the case are discussed.

This study aims to compare surgical outcomes and in-hospital cost between robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), laparoscopic and open approaches for benign gynaecology, colorectal and urological patients and to explore the association between cost and surgical complexity. This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients undergoing RAS, laparoscopic or open surgery for benign gynaecology, colorectal or urological conditions between July 2018 and June 2021 at a major public hospital in Sydney. Patients' characteristics, surgical outcomes and in-hospital cost variables were extracted from the hospital medical records using routinely collected diagnosis-related groups (DRG) codes...

INTRODUCTION: the use of endoscopy in the surgical management of a wide range of ailments has revolutionised the practice of surgery. Endoscopy however has been underutilised in developing nations. Optimal training exposure during the residency training program is considered as very crucial to the improvement of endoscopy practice in this region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception and endoscopy training exposure of resident doctors in gynaecology, general surgery and urology in four residency training centres in Abuja...

This study aims to examine changes in QoL trajectories following RAS across different surgical specialities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted for patients undergoing urologic, cardiothoracic, colorectal or benign gynaecological RAS, between June 2016 and January 2020 at a tertiary referral hospital in Australia...

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic exenteration (PE) is a complex multivisceral surgical procedure indicated for locally advanced or recurrent pelvic malignancies. It poses significant technical challenges which account for the high risk of morbidity and mortality associated with the procedure. Developments in minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approaches and enhanced peri-operative care have facilitated improved long term outcomes. However, the optimum approach to PE remains controversial. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines to identify studies comparing MIS (robotic or laparoscopic) approaches for PE versus the open approach for patients with locally advanced or recurrent pelvic malignancies...

Around 500,000 Danes are suffering from urinary incontinence, and stress urinary incontinence and urgency urinary incontinence, alone or mixed, are the most common types. Diagnostic workup is similar for all types of urinary incontinence (men and women) and can be done by the GP. Most conservative interventions can be commenced by the GP. In complicated or treatment-resistant cases and when surgery is needed, referral to a urologic or gynaecological department can be necessary, as argued in this review.

BACKGROUND: One of the few remaining important issues in urological and gynaecological surgery relates to fistulas between the urinary tract and the vagina. Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) and ureterovaginal fistulas (UVF) are defined as abnormal connections between the urinary tract, on the one side, and the female genital system, on the other. CASE PRESENTATION: This study is about an unreported and undescribed case of 24 year old female who presented with the complaints of continuous urinary incontinence for 18 months following total abdominal hysterectomy...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the short-term risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) associated with procedures performed at outpatient specialised hospital clinics. METHODS: In this case-crossover, population-based study, we identified first-time AMI cases aged ≥40 years via patient registries and linked them to their surgical intervention in Norway (2008-2016) and Sweden (2001-2014), respectively. The number of individuals with AMI who underwent procedures 0-7 days (hazard period) prior to the AMI diagnosis was compared with cases who were exposed 29-36 days (control period) before the AMI...

Previous studies have predominantly focused on training methods and design and subsequent assessable performances and outcomes in the operating room, which only covers some aspects of training engagement and transfer of training. Changing medical practice has been a constant process based on many scientific findings for years. In the oncology community, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), one of the major annual conferences, presented the latest updates on practice-changing in cancer. At the recent meeting of 2022, held this year on June 2-6, researchers presented essential findings in urological, gynecological, and breast cancer management. In urological cancer, olaparib + abiraterone was demonstrated thru the PROpel trial to benefit in first-line treatment mCRPC regardless of the HRR stratification factor, along with the adjuvant therapy everolimus, for fully resected RCC in the EVEREST trial...

Ureteral injury is one of the major complications related to colorectal and gynaecologic procedures. Injuries are sometimes identified intraoperatively, but the diagnosis of ureteral injury is often delayed. Ureterocolic fistula is a relatively rare condition and mostly due to obstructing calculi, diverticular disease of the colon, radiotherapy, cancer, or trauma. Here in, we present a boy with an iatrogenic left ureterocolic fistula following multiple colonic surgeries that were complicated by an un-noticed left ureteric injury...

Laparoscopy is an imaging technique that enables minimally-invasive procedures in various medical disciplines including abdominal surgery, gynaecology and urology. To date, publicly available laparoscopic image datasets are mostly limited to general classifications of data, semantic segmentations of surgical instruments and low-volume weak annotations of specific abdominal organs. The Dresden Surgical Anatomy Dataset provides semantic segmentations of eight abdominal organs (colon, liver, pancreas, small intestine, spleen, stomach, ureter, vesicular glands), the abdominal wall and two vessel structures (inferior mesenteric artery, intestinal veins) in laparoscopic view...

Although uncommon, vaginal fibroepithelial polyps can present as prolapsing vaginal tissue, causing discomfort and anxiety. Surgical excision of the polyps can provide a minimally invasive solution. In this case, we describe a nulliparous female in late adolescence who presented for evaluation of tissue protruding through the vagina. On exam, a 5×4 cm fibroepithelial polyp was extending from the distal posterior vagina on a broad stalk. Successful transperineal surgical excision was performed. Fibroepithelial polyps, although uncommon, can be a cause for prolapsing vaginal tissue and should be part of the differential diagnosis, especially in patients who have no risk factors for pelvic organ prolapse...
