BACKGROUND: Shigellosis remains one of the global causes of morbidity and mortality. However, the global emergence of antibiotic resistance has become the leading cause of treatment failure in shigellosis. This review aimed to provide an updated picture of the antimicrobial resistance rates in Shigella species in Iranian pediatrics. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science until 28 July 2021. The meta-analysis was performed by computing the pooled using a random-effects model with Stata/SE software, v...

Phytoremediation has been a potential solution for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water. Here, we evaluated the toxicological safety of ciprofloxacin-contaminated water treated by 96 h with Salvinia molesta. The Neotropical catfish Rhamdia quelen was used as a model, and the potential of the phytoremediation technique for mitigating the drug accumulation in the fishes was also studied. Fish exposed to Cipro (1 and 10 µg·L-1 ) in untreated water showed toxic responses (alteration of hematological, genotoxicity, biochemical, and histopathological biomarkers) and accumulated Cipro in their muscles at concentrations high for human consumption (target hazardous quotient > 1)...

Severe ocular infections by Acanthamoeba sp. lead to keratitis, resulting in irreversible vision loss in immune-compromised individuals. When a protozoal infection spreads to neural tissues, it causes granulomatous encephalitis, which can be fatal. Treatment often takes longer due to the transition of amoeba from trophozoites to cyst stages, cyst being the dormant form of Acanthamoeba . A prolonged use of therapeutic agents, such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro), results in severe side effects; thus, it is critical to improve the therapeutic efficacy of these widely used antibiotics, possibly by limiting the drug-sensitive protozoal-phase transition to cyst formation...

This study was designed to investigate the impacts of Doxo alone and in combination with Cipro on the hepatic and cardiac CYP1A2, CYP2J3, and CYP3A1 mRNA levels. We also aimed to analyze the cardiac function by perfusing isolated rat hearts. Rats were given Doxo and/or Cipro in chronic (3-week) and acute (single-day) dosing schedules. Cardiac CYP2J3, CYP3A1, and CYP1A2 gene expression levels were measured by quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Cardiac functions of the isolated hearts were evaluated by using the Langendorff technique...

Persian Buttercup ( Ranunculus asiaticus L.; 2x=2n=16; estimated genome size: 7.6Gb) is an ornamental and perennial crop native of Asia Minor and Mediterranean basin, marketed both as cut flower or potted plant. Currently new varieties are developed by selecting plants carrying desirable traits in segregating progenies obtained by controlled mating, which are propagated through rhizomes or micro-propagated in vitro . In order to escalate selection efficiency and respond to market requests, more knowledge of buttercup genetics would facilitate the identification of markers associated with loci and genes controlling key ornamental traits, opening the way for molecular assisted breeding programs...

In the year 2020, Italy faced a pandemic due to the virus SARS-CoV-2 for short COVID-19. Following this pandemic, a national lockdown period was imposed and throughout the year 2020 various measures were taken by the government to limit the mobility of people and contain the mortality associated with COVID-19. In Italy, pandemic measures led to a reduction in anthropogenic activities and provided an unprecedented opportunity to evaluate the possible effects that restrictions on anthropogenic activities may have on the air quality...

In the last few decades, pharmaceuticals, credited with saving millions of lives, have emerged as a new class of environmental contaminants. These compounds can have both chronic and acute harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems and consequently on human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of extremely sensitive, portable, and low-cost devices to perform analysis. In the present review article, recent reports on the application of various voltammetric and photo-electrochemical techniques using different electrode materials for the determination of antibiotic Ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) are reported...

Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) water contamination is a global concern, having reached disturbing concentrations and threatening the aquatic ecosystems. We investigated the physiological responses and Cipro-phytoremediation capacity of one floating (Salvinia molesta D.S. Mitchell) and one submerged (Egeria densa Planch.) species of aquatic macrophytes. The plants were exposed to increased concentrations of Cipro (0, 1, 10, and 100 µg.Cipro.L-1 ) in artificially contaminated water for 96 and 168 h. Although the antibiotic affected the activities of mitochondrial electron transport chain enzymes, the resulting increases in H2 O2 concentrations were not associated with oxidative damage or growth reductions, mainly due to the activation of antioxidant systems for both species...

Postoperative restenosis in patients with external ear canal (EEC) atresia or stenosis is a common complication following canaloplasty. Our aim in this study was to explore the feasibility of using a three dimensionally (3D)-printed, patient-individualized, drug ((dexamethasone (DEX)), and ciprofloxacin (cipro))-releasing external ear canal implant (EECI) as a postoperative stent after canaloplasty. We designed and pre-clinically tested this novel implant for drug release (by high-performance liquid chromatography), biocompatibility (by the MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay), bio-efficacy (by the TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha)-reduction test (DEX) and inhibition zone test (for cipro)), and microbial contamination (formation of turbidity or sediments in culture medium)...

For the first time, CA was blended with polyethylene oxide (PEO) using acetone and formic acid. Methylene blue (MB) was incorporated into monolayered random CA/PEO nanofibers. They had a diameter of 400-600 nm, were hydrophilic, and generated reactive oxygen species upon irradiation. Thus, they mediated antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation (aPDI) against isolated biofilm-forming Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa...
