OBJECTIVE: High sensitive thyroglobulin assays (hsTg) has decreased the need for stimulated Tg measurements in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). However, multiple assays analyzing the same samples may report different values. Accordingly, appropriate assay-specific cut-off levels should be selected in representative patients series. Here we evaluate the role of a new hsTg assay in low to intermediate risk DTC patients and select appropriate assay-specific clinical cut-off limits...

Ceramics based on group IV-V transition metal borides and carbides possess melting points above 3000 °C, are ablation resistant and are, therefore, candidates for the design of components of next generation space vehicles, rocket nozzle inserts, and nose cones or leading edges for hypersonic aerospace vehicles. As such, they will have to bear high thermo-mechanical loads, which makes strength at high temperature of great importance. While testing of these materials above 2000 °C is necessary to prove their capabilities at anticipated operating temperatures, literature reports are quite limited...

Percutaneous image-guided ablation has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of benign osseous lesions and has evolved into the treatment of metastatic lesions for both pain palliation and local tumor control. Ablation is increasingly becoming part of the treatment algorithm of painful bone lesions, requiring multidisciplinary input from radiation, surgical, and medical oncologists. Substantial pain reduction is often possible in those who have failed to benefit from conventional therapies such as systemic and radiation therapy...

Anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX)-loaded photothermal nanocomposite MnFe2O4@mSiO2 with magnetic targeting and T1/T2-weighted dual-mode magnetic resonance imaging of MnFe2O4 core and NIR/pH-coupling sensitive mesoporous silica shell nanocarriers was designed and synthesized successfully. The anticancer drug DOX can be absorbed into mesoporous layer of MnFe2O4@mSiO2 nanocomposite, which shows obvious photothermal/chemo dual-modal synergistic therapies triggered by NIR/pH. Under 808 nm irradiation, MnFe2O4 can transform light into thermo, which can not only ablate tumor cells directly but also promote chemotherapy drugs releasing from mesoporous layer to kill tumor cells...

Smart nanoparticles are increasingly important in a variety of applications such as cancer therapy. However, it is still a major challenge to develop light-responsive nanoparticles that can maximize the potency of synergistic thermo-chemotherapy under light irradiation. Here, spatially confined cyanine-anchored silica nanochannels loaded with chemotherapeutic doxorubicin (CS-DOX-NCs) for light-driven synergistic cancer therapy are introduced. CS-DOX-NCs possess a J-type aggregation conformation of cyanine dye within the nanochannels and encapsulate doxorubicin through the π-π interaction with cyanine dye...

INTRODUCTION: It has been increasingly recognized that the insular cortex plays an important role in frontotemporal epilepsy (FTE) in children. The insula, however, cannot properly by monitored with conventional subdural grids, and open surgical resection of the insula is technically difficult and often associated with significant morbidity. Stereotactically placed insular depth electrodes allow direct and comprehensive monitoring of this region, and can easily be replaced with a laser applicator for minimally invasive treatment via thermo-ablation...

PURPOSE: Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA) has been used to ablate renal neoplasms with good outcome. However, if bowel lies adjacent to a tumor, ablation increases the risk of thermal bowel injury, and the consequences could be fatal. We describe the technique, effectiveness and safety of using thermo-sensitive hydrogel as insulation to displace the bowel away during PRFA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was divided into two main parts: the in vitro and in vivo studies...

Among image-guided thermo-ablative techniques, percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA) is the most widely used technique for the treatment of primary and secondary lung malignancies. Tolerance of PRFA in the lung is excellent. However, relatively little is known about potential rare complications. This article presents both the clinical and imaging features of lung PRFA complications as well as their prevention and management. Complications may be classified in four groups: pleuropulmonary (e.g., bronchopleural or bronchial fistula, delayed abscess or aspergilloma inside post-PRFA cavitations, pulmonary artery pseudo aneurysm, gas embolism and interstitial pneumonia); thoracic wall and vertebral (e...

How to destroy drug-resistant tumor cells remains an ongoing challenge for cancer treatment. We herein report on a therapeutic nanoparticle, aHLP-PDA, which has an acid-activated hemolytic polymer (aHLP) grafted onto photothermal polydopamine (PDA) nanosphere via boronate ester bond, in efforts to ablate drug-resistant tumors. Upon exposure to oxidative stress and/or near-infrared laser irradiation, aHLP-PDA nanoparticle responsively releases aHLP, likely via responsive cleavage of boronate ester bond, and thus responsively exhibits acid-facilitated mammalian-membrane-disruptive activity...

Development of combination photothermal-chemotherapy platform is of great interest for enhancing antitumor efficacy and inhibiting tumor recurrence, which supports selective and dose-controlled delivery of heat and anticancer drugs to tumor. Here, an injectable nanocomposite hydrogel incorporating PEGylated gold nanorods (GNRs) and paclitaxel-loaded chitosan polymeric micelles (PTX-M) is developed in pursuit of improved local tumor control. After intratumoral injection, both GNRs and PTX-M can be simultaneously delivered and immobilized in the tumor tissue by the thermo-sensitive hydrogel matrix...

Phase explosion is a phase change process that occurs during short pulse laser ablation. Phase explosion is a result of homogeneous nucleation of vapor in the superheated melt and results in a rapid transition from a superheated melt to a mixture of vapor and liquid droplets that expand from the surface. The sudden phase transition results in rapid material removal, and if occurring in an ambient gas, causes a shock wave to propagate away from the surface. Measurements of this shock wave are commonly used with the Taylor-Sedov blast wave theory to estimate shock wave pressure and temperature...

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown intriguing applications in biotechnological and biomedical fields due to their unique shape and properties. However, the fact that unmodified CNTs are prone to aggregation, stunts CNTs applications under physiological conditions. In this research, we found that as little as 1/5th the single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) weight of Evans Blue (EB) is capable of dispersing SWCNT as well as facilitating SWCNT functionalization. In view of the binding between EB and albumin, the yielding product (SWCNT/EB) demonstrated extreme stability for weeks under physiological conditions and it can be endowed with a therapeutic ability by simply mixing SWCNT/EB with an albumin based drug...

Surgery can be a highly effective treatment for medically refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The emergence of minimally invasive resective and nonresective treatment options has led to interest in epilepsy surgery among patients and providers. Nevertheless, not all procedures are appropriate for all patients, and it is critical to consider seizure outcomes with each of these approaches, as seizure freedom is the greatest predictor of patient quality of life. Standard anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) remains the gold standard in the treatment of TLE, with seizure freedom resulting in 60-80% of patients...
