Significance: Laser use has become part of the gold standard of treatment as an effective adjuvant in multimodal therapy for pathologic scarring caused by burns, trauma, acne, and surgery, as well as vascular anomalies. Understanding indications and applications for laser therapy is essential for physicians to improve patient outcomes. Recent Advances: Since the 1980s, the medical use of lasers has continuously evolved with improvements in technology. Novel lasers and fractionated technologies are currently being studied in the hopes to improve treatment efficacy, while reducing complications...

Breast surgery is usually recommended for women who have completed puberty. Indeed, during adolescence the breast is constantly changing, the patient's weight is often unstable, the risk of inflammatory scars (hypertrophic or keloid) is higher and disturbances of areolar sensitivity can affect the patient's quality of sexual life. In addition, the risk of infection is not negligible, especially during an acne outbreak. In case of early implant placement, iterative changes should be planned. Finally, the result obtained is not always stable but above all the lack of psychological maturity and the legal need to obtain the agreement of both parents are obstacles to early surgery...

INTRODUCTION: There is limited basic research on carbon dioxide (CO2) fractional laser, indicating blind spots in CO2 fractional laser treatment of certain diseases. This study aimed to organize previous literature, summarize the current research, and speculate on possible future development. METHODS: We searched document data on fractional CO2 lasers from the Web of Science core collection database and retrieved 928 articles from 2004-2021. CiteSpace software was used to analyze the main institutions, authors, subject hotspots, and research frontiers in global CO2 fractional laser research...

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of sternal keloids, corticosteroid therapy has side effects including abnormal sebum secretion and acne. Relapse of keloids is common after corticosteroid injection in patients with oily skin. To reduce side effects and keloid recurrence, we used a combination of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) and hyaluronic acid (HA) as synergetic management for multiple sternal keloids in patients with oily skin. METHODS: In total, 58 patients with multiple sternal keloids who received monthly steroid injections were retrospectively included...

Despite the rising trend for applying platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the management of various types of scars, there is no convincing evidence supporting its use. This motivated us to review the randomized clinical trials that examine the effectiveness and safety of PRP, alone or in combination with other methods, for the management of atrophic or hypertrophic/keloidal scars. The Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched until September 1st , 2020...

Acne scarring is common and can occur despite effective acne management. Acne scarring patients suffer from significant psychosocial morbidity including depression and suicidality. Despite availability and advancement of therapeutic modalities, treatment for acne scarring is uncommon and often overlooked in the acne patient encounter. The utilization of acne scarring assessment tools and identification of specific acne scar subtypes allow for a tailored therapeutic approach. Part I of this continuing medical education series covers the pathophysiology and morphology of textural and pigmented acne scars, scarring assessment tools and medical treatment options...

Scars are a common disfiguring sequela of various events such as acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, surgery, trauma, and burns, which can lead to serious psychosocial problems with a negative effect on the quality of life. Many conventional approaches have been proposed for the treatment of scars, including surgical techniques, dermabrasion, chemical peels, topical silicone gel, 5-fluorouracile and dermal fillers injection or autologous fat transfer for atrophic scars, and corticosteroids injection for hypertrophic and keloid scars; however, they have sporadic effects...

Acne and rosacea are common inflammatory skin conditions present in numerous racial and ethnic groups. There are distinct differences in clinical presentation, exacerbating factors, potential triggers and consequences of both conditions in individuals with skin of colour (SOC), classified as Fitzpatrick skin types III-VI. For example, acne can be complicated by the development of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring in SOC, and this can influence treatment choice. Although rosacea is reported less frequently in SOC, this may be the result of delayed diagnosis or late presentation due to the difficulty in discerning the classic features of erythema in darker skin tones...

Hidradenomas are relatively rare benign tumors in the dermis that differentiate into eccrine or apocrine sweat glands. They often present as round or oval nodules and vary in color. Generally, they occur in the head and neck region. Keloid scars are often red, elevated lesions that are caused by chronic inflammation in the reticular dermis. These scars demonstrate a preference for high skin-tension sites, including the scapular region. Herein, we describe a case of a dark red hidradenoma on the scapular region with a high incidence of acne surrounding the lesion area that was initially diagnosed as an acne-initiated keloid...

BACKGROUND: A few reports on scar and keloid formation in patients receiving systemic isotretinoin have encouraged a conservative approach in which laser procedures are delayed during and 6 to 12 months after the completion of treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety of laser hair removal with alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG lasers in patients receiving systemic isotretinoin treatment. BACKGROUND: Acne scarring can be divided into 2 types: atrophic and hypertrophic scars. Papular acne scars are commonly encountered, skin-colored papules on the chin and back. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of each acne scar type and to investigate the clinical manifestations of papular acne scars. METHODS: This retrospective study included 416 patients with acne scars. Dermatologists classified the scars into 3 types (atrophic, papular, and keloid type) based on clinical photographs and analyzed the clinical and histologic features of papular acne scars...

Chronic pruritus carries a significant burden of disease and is associated with a negative impact on quality of life. African Americans are disproportionately burdened by chronic pruritic disorders, including but not limited to atopic dermatitis, prurigo nodularis, inflammatory scalp dermatoses, pathologic scarring, and HIV-related dermatoses. Racial differences in skin structure and function may contribute to the pathogenesis of itch in African Americans. Itch perception and response to treatment in African Americans remain understudied and not well understood...

Previous approaches to acne management have focused on the four main factors implicated in acne, namely, androgen-mediated sebogenesis (considered integral to acne), hyperkeratinization, colonization with Cutibacterium acnes, and inflammation related to both innate and adaptive mechanisms. Recent advances have facilitated potential novel approaches to acne management, as the pathophysiology and the immunological aspects related to acne and wound healing have evolved. Particular targets that have been shown to be closely involved in acne pathophysiology and wound healing include interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-17, IL-23, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)...

A case report of massive mandibular keloid with severe infection induced by acne achieved resolution of skin lesions after combined treatment with surgery and high concentration single-dose 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (5-ALA PDT). The patient achieved satisfactory effects, after receiving combined treatment with radiotherapy, secondary healing, intralesional injection of glucocorticoids, and other treatments. The scar didn't exhibit growth in a follow-up check after a year. This case provides evidence that photodynamic therapy is effective in the treatment of massive mandibular keloid with severe infection...
