We present the case of a patient with severe postoperative scarring from surgical treatment for gastroschisis, with the intestine located immediately under the dermal scar. Although many patients are unsatisfied with the results of scar repair treatment, few reports exist regarding severe or difficult cases involving the surgical repair of postoperative scar contracture. We achieved an excellent result via simulation involving graph paper drawings that were generated using computed tomography images as a reference, followed by dermal scar deepithelialization...

BACKGROUND: Jeju Island is geographically and socioeconomically distinct from the mainland of South Korea. Thus, the presentation and management of non-melanocytic skin cancers (NMSC) of the head and neck may differ from those in other regions of the country. We compared the clinical characteristics and treatment modalities of NMSC on Jeju Island with the findings of similar regional studies. METHODS: Patient data, including age, sex, diagnosis, tumor site, treatment, and recurrence, were obtained from the medical and pathology records of patients diagnosed with NMSC between January 2010 and June 2015...

Background/Aims: Colonoscopy can detect precancerous lesions, which can subsequently be removed and reduce incidences of and mortality from colorectal cancer (CRC). However, recently published data have highlighted a significant rate of CRC in patients who previously underwent colonoscopy. Among many reasons, incomplete resection has been considered as a significant contributor. However, to date, there have only been a few studies regarding incompletely resected polyps, especially advanced colorectal adenoma (ACA)...

Objective: To discuss the imaging findings and clinicopathological features of the intramural gastric metastasis (IGM) of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods: The imaging findings of 11 patients with IGM confirmed by surgical pathology were reviewed retrospectively, and compared with clinicopathological features. Of the 11 cases, eight underwent upper gastrointestinal radiography, ten underwent contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans and one underwent plain CT scanning. Results: In all 11 cases, the primary cancer was located in the middle or lower thoracic esophagus, and nine of 11 had lymph nodes metastasis...

Objective: To investigate the clinical significance of detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood from patients with osteosarcoma (OS) using the iFISH (immunofluorescence and fluorescence in situ hybridization) method. Methods: The live cells recovery rate of immune-magnetic beads was evaluated by live-cell fluorescent tracer technology. The expression of CD45 and CK18 on the cell surface of HOS and HepG2 cells was measured by flow cytometry. And the chromosome aneuploidy was detected by centromeric FISH probe CEP8...

Divergence insufficiency is acquired esotropia at distance fixation with symptomatic uncrossed diplopia but fusion at near. It can be divided into two forms: primary isolated form and secondary form associated with neurologic abnormalities, also called divergence palsy. The clinical features of divergence insufficiency include small esotropia only at distance but orthotropia or small esophoria at near, comitant deviation at lateral gaze, reduced divergence fusion, full abduction and normal saccadic velocities in abduction...

The core goal of "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for National Eye Health (2016 to 2020)" is to obtain eye health. At present, there are still several problems hampering Chinese eye health management system development, including the lack of top policy design, system protection and financial investment, weak support from primary health care institutions, other medical disciplines and social forces, and insufficient digital information. To achieve effective eye health management, it is necessary to address the sustainability of eye health management, the integrity of eye health digital information data and the feasibility of eye health payment...

Background The indication for surgery is justified by an expected improvement for the patient. To evaluate the probability and extent of individual postoperative patient benefit, the surgeon needs to elaborate numerous parameters of potential relevance for the outcome beyond his key competence, that is the technical dimension of the operation. Despite the highest medical standards, individual postoperative satisfaction with surgery is highly variable, even in cases with a technically good result. The aim of the present study was to investigate the individual predictability of postoperative pain and satisfaction in patients with elective musculoskeletal surgery...

Purpose: To quantitatively evaluate the superficial microvasculature in the macular and peripapillary areas in glaucomatous and healthy eyes using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). Methods: We enrolled 26 eyes of medically managed primary open-angle glaucoma patients and 27 eyes of healthy subjects were enrolled in this prospective study. Measurements of OCT-A vessel density were acquired both in the macular and peripapillary areas. We compared vessel density values, the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cpRNFL), the ganglion cell complex (GCC), and standard automated perimetry (SAP) parameters across study groups...

BACKGROUND: Only an insignificant quantum of data exists on the prevalence of primary headaches among those living in Kuwait. We aimed to determine the prevalence of primary headaches among the Kuwaiti population. METHODS: This community-based study included Kuwaiti population aged 18-65 years. Using systematic random sampling, data was collected by the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap and Impaired Participation questionnaire. Responses to the diagnostic questions were transformed into diagnoses algorithmically to confirm the diagnosis of primary headache...

BACKGROUND: To investigate the dependency of the one-year recovery in gait after total hip arthroplasty on age and preoperative conditions. METHODS: Longitudinal retrospective study on 20 elderly patients with unilateral total hip arthroplasty consequent to hip osteoarthritis, assessed by gait analysis before surgery (T0), 2weeks (T1), 6 (T2) and 12months (T3) post-surgery. A set of variables assessing primary gait deviations and compensatory mechanisms were extracted from gait analysis data...

Ellen Verolme, Arjan Mieremet
Forensic investigations are primarily meant to obtain objective answers that can be used for criminal prosecution. Accident analyses are usually performed to learn from incidents and to prevent similar events from occurring in the future. Although the primary goal may be different, the steps in which information is gathered, interpreted and weighed are similar in both types of investigations, implying that forensic techniques can be of use in accident investigations as well. The use in accident investigations usually means that more information can be obtained from the available information than when used in criminal investigations, since the latter require a higher evidence level...
