OBJECTIVES: Genetic polymorphism of viral receptors is relevant to risks of HIV-1 infection, while it is still under debated whether the polymorphism of SDF1, a unique ligand for HIV-1 coreceptor CXCR4, is associated with HIV susceptibility and AIDS disease progression. Therefore, we provided an updated quantitative assessment by meta-analysis from 16 case-control and 7 cohort studies. METHODS: Articles reporting the relationship between SDF1 polymorphism and HIV susceptibility or AIDS progression were retrieved from PubMed, Embase and Ovid electronic databases up to Apr 2017...

This work studied the effect of protein malnutrition on the hemato-immune response to the respiratory challenge with Streptococcus pneumoniae and evaluated whether the dietary recovery with a probiotic strain has a beneficial effect in that response. Three important conclusions can be inferred from the results presented in this work: a) protein-malnutrition significantly impairs the emergency myelopoiesis induced by the generation of the innate immune response against pneumococcal infection; b) repletion of malnourished mice with treatments including nasally or orally administered Lactobacillus rhamnosus CRL1505 are able to significantly accelerate the recovery of granulopoiesis and improve innate immunity and; c) the immunological mechanisms involved in the protective effect of immunobiotics vary according to the route of administration...

The atypical chemokine receptor CXCR7 binds the chemokines CXCL12 and CXCL11. The receptor is widely expressed and was shown to tune CXCR12-induced responses of CXCR4. Here, the function of CXCR7 was examined at late stages of human B-cell maturation, when B cells differentiate into Ab-secreting plasmablasts. We identified two populations of CXCR7(+) cells in tonsillar lymphocytes, one being presumably memory B cells or early plasmablasts (FSC(low) CD19(+) CD38(mid) ) and the other being plasmablasts or early plasma cells (FSC(high) CD19(+) CD38(+) )...

Tumor progenitor cells represent a population of drug-resistant cells that can survive conventional chemotherapy and lead to tumor relapse. However, little is known of the role of tumor progenitors in prostate cancer metastasis. The studies reported herein show that the CXCR4/CXCL12 axis, a key regulator of tumor dissemination, plays a role in the maintenance of prostate cancer stem-like cells. The CXCL4/CXCR12 pathway is activated in the CD44(+)/CD133(+) prostate progenitor population and affects differentiation potential, cell adhesion, clonal growth and tumorigenicity...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: CXCL12/CXCR4 is expressed in many kinds of tumors, which is associated with tumor proliferation and invasion. This study was to investigate the expression of CXCL12/CXCR4, and explore its correlation to prognosis and clinicopathologic factors of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: The expression of CXCL12/CXCR4 protein in 186 specimens of ESCC was assessed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The positive rates of CXCL4 and CXCR12 protein in ESCC tissues were 67...

Although intrapulmonary progenitor cells are traditionally believed to be the source for regenerating cells in response to lung injury, recent mounting evidence indicates that a significant proportion of the mesenchymal cells involved in this repair/remodeling process may be derived from extrapulmonary sources, such as the recently described circulating fibrocyte as well as other bone marrow-derived progenitor cells. Studies tracking CD34 and/or CD45 markers of fibrocytes show their presence in injured murine lung tissue...
