Ultrasonography + dental pulp

Garima Yeluri, C Anand Kumar, Namita Raghav
BACKGROUND: The human tissues continuously undergo modification as deposition of calcium (CA) salts either in an organized or disorganized pattern. The latter pattern usually occurs in the soft tissues such as in arteries, brain, kidneys, lungs, and dental pulp. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the presence of pulp calcification and carotid artery calcification (CDC) as a marker for renal calcification and altered serum biomarkers such as serum CA, phosphorus (P), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)...

The current diversity of opinions in endodontic diagnosis has been a source of interest and academic debate by clinicians and researchers. Currently, no single pulp testing technique can reliably diagnose all pulpal conditions neither it has been proven to be superior in all aspects. Despite improvements of various aspects of this process, there are no historically dramatic changes, or consensus for pulpal status in health or disease in addition to a lack of relative systematic reviews. In this review, the past, present and future most debated and critically questioned issues of endodontic diagnosis are discussed...

INTRODUCTION: The success of endodontic treatment depends on the identification of all root canals. Technological advances have facilitated this process as well as the assessment of internal anatomical variations. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of clinical and radiological methods in locating second mesiobuccal canals (MB2) in maxillary first molars. METHODS: Fifty patients referred for analysis; access and clinical analysis; cone-beam endodontic treatment of their maxillary first molars were submitted to the following assessments: analysis; access and clinical analysis; cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT); post-CBCT clinical analysis; clinical analysis using an operating microscope; and clinical analysis after Start X ultrasonic inserts in teeth with negative results in all previous analyses...

AIM:   To examine whether Doppler ultrasound can detect changes in pulpal blood flow after infiltration anaesthesia. METHODOLOGY:   Changes in pulpal blood flow in maxillary central incisor teeth of 18 patients (mean age 26.7 years, 13 men, five women) after infiltration anaesthesia were examined. Before infiltration anaesthesia, the pulpal blood flow was measured using Doppler ultrasound. A local anaesthetic solution containing 2% lidocaine with 1:80,000 epinephrine was injected into the submucosa above the experimental tooth...

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory response to bacterial plaque in which the anchoring bone and soft tissues supporting teeth are destroyed, resulting in tooth mobility and loss. Dental caries involves the spread of infection from the dentine to the vascular dental pulp and periapical bony tissues, before involvement of adjacent soft tissues and spreading sepsis. Several case-controlled, cross-sectional, and cohort studies report correlation between periodontitis and increased cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and peripheral artery disease, as determined by clinical disease, angiography, ultrasonography, and reduced flow-mediated dilation...

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the difference in pulpal blood flow between vital and root-filled teeth by using ultrasound Doppler imaging. METHODS: To compare the difference in pulpal blood flow between vital and root-filled teeth, 11 patients (mean age, 32.06 years; 3 male, 8 female) who had undergone root canal treatment on the anterior tooth of the maxilla or mandible and had a vital contralateral tooth were examined. Pulpal blood flow measurements were performed on the vital and root canal-treated teeth by using ultrasound Doppler imaging...

Some new means and innovative operative techniques in the field of endodontics are presented that have been developed and perfected over time. Instruments such as the operative microscope, ultrasonography, miniaturised tools for surgery, new materials such as mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) should become part of the daily routine of the endodontist. For example, the operative microscope plays a role in diagnosing pulp damage after removal of deep caries; in orthograde endodontics in diagnosing perforations; alongside ultrasonography in the search for calcified canals, removal of pins (screw-type, fibre, etc...

Dynamic changes of pulpal blood flow (PBF) and gingival blood flow (GBF) induced by intra-venous injection of two kinds of vasoactive drugs were observed in dogs by means of Laser Doppler Velocimetry. Intra-venous injection of norepinephrine caused PBF to increase, corresponding to the blood pressure (BP) increase, while GBF decreased. Orciprenaline sulfate caused PBF to decrease parallel to the BP decrease, as compared with a GBF increase. The effects of these vasoactive drugs lasted longer on GBF than on PBF and BP...

Tooth length determination is a crucial step in endodontic treatment. Until the late 1970s, tooth length determination was based mainly on radiographic interpretation. The advent of apex locators, which identify the difference in the electrical resistance between the root canal and the periodontal membrane, ushered in a new era for measuring tooth length. However, the accuracy of these devices has been questioned. Pertinent literature is discussed with the aim of providing information on the development of the concept, techniques, and devices for tooth length determination...
