Significant concerns have been raised over antibiotics pollution in aquatic environments in recent years. In this study, sorption of sulfamethazine (SMT) by novel graphene oxide-coated biochar nanocomposites (GO-BC) based on graphene oxide (GO) with bamboo sawdust biochar (BC) was investigated. In comparison with the original BC, the sorption capacity of GO-BC for SMT increased by 1.14 times. Sorption of SMT onto GO-BC was proved to be dominantly by chemisorption, and Freundlich isotherm described the sorption adequately...

The purpose of this study was to compare the immediate change in temporal summation of heat pain (TSP) between spinal manipulation (SMT) and spinal mobilization (MOB) in healthy volunteers. Ninety-two volunteers (24 males; 23.8 ± 5.3 years) were randomized to receive SMT, MOB or no treatment (REST) for one session. Primary outcomes were changes in TSP, measured at the hand and foot, immediately following the session. A planned subgroup analysis investigated effects across empirically derived TSP clusters. PRIMARY OUTCOME: There were no differences in the immediate change in TSP measured at the foot between SMT and MOB, however both treatments were superior to the REST condition...

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic local gastric resection has become the standard form of surgery for gastric submucosal tumors (SMTs) and is currently being actively selected for these cases. However, total gastrectomy or proximal gastrectomy is performed when tumors are adjacent to the cardia of stomach. Unfortunately, these procedures are highly invasive and can cause marked decreases in activities of daily living. We perform a single-incision laparoscopic intragastric surgery (sLIGS), which are both minimally invasive and offers improved cosmetic outcomes, to treat SMT located adjacent to the esophagogastric junction (EGJ)...

Because an esophageal submucosa tumor (SMT) may be malignant despite its small size, a safe endoscopic resection method is needed in some small SMTs. Conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) may be simple, but incomplete pathologic resection margin status is common. We aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of 2 kinds of EMR techniques (conventional EMR and EMR with band ligation device) and to evaluate the factors associated with incomplete pathologic resection. We evaluated the medical records of 36 patients...

It is known that autonomic modulation is responsive to ovarian hormone levels and that estrogen increases nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. However, little is known about the interaction of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms with autonomic modulation, oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk in females. This study aimed to investigate cardiovascular, autonomic and oxidative parameters after selective NOS inhibition. A spectral analysis of systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and heart rate variability (HRV) was performed...

Epstein-Barr Virus-associated smooth muscle tumor (EBV-SMT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor typically seen in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of EBV-SMT and associated granulomatous inflammation in the liver of a 32-year-old man with history of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). To our knowledge, an association of these two lesions has not been previously reported. We review the literature and discuss pathogenesis, differential diagnosis and immunohistochemical (IHC) stains helpful for the diagnosis of this rare entity...

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) resembling submucosal tumor (SMT; CRC/SMT) is very rare. Because its biopsy is challenging, accurate preoperative diagnosis is also very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman with a high serum carcinoembryonic antigen level underwent a computed tomography colonoscopy, which showed extrinsic rectum compression. A coronal magnetic resonance image showed a 4-cm low-intensity tumor between her rectum and sacrum. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) showed a 30-mm low-echoic lesion originating from the rectum...

Ten to 15% of mothers experience postpartum depression (PPD). If untreated, PPD may negatively affect mothers' and infants' mental health in the long term. Accordingly, effective treatments are required. In the present study, we investigated the effect of detached mindfulness (DM) and stress management training (SMT) as adjuvants, compared to pharmacologic treatment only, on symptoms of depression in women with PPD. Forty-five primiparae (mean age: M = 24.5 years) with diagnosed PPD and treated with an SSRI (citalopram; CIT) took part in the study...

Speed performance during gait initiation is known to be dependent on the capacity of the central nervous system to generate efficient anticipatory postural adjustments (APA). According to the posturo-kinetic capacity (PKC) concept, any factor enhancing postural chain mobility and especially spine mobility, may facilitate the development of APA and thus speed performance. "Spinal Manipulative Therapy High-Velocity, Low-Amplitude" (SMT-HVLA) is a healing technique applied to the spine which is routinely used by healthcare practitioners to improve spine mobility...

Self-medication theory (SMT) posits that individuals exposed to trauma and resulting posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSD) are at risk for heavy drinking and associated negative consequences. Close peer alcohol use is also a powerful predictor of alcohol involvement in college, particularly influencing those with greater negative affect. As individuals with PTSD may rely on peers for support, peer drinking behaviors are possibly putting them at further risk for greater alcohol use and resulting consequences...

Objectives: The purposes of this study were to (1) determine whether disclosure of having received a placebo treatment following participation in a randomized manual therapy trial resulted in changes in negative mood or attitudes towards health care and the provider and (2) examine the association between changes in mood or attitude and changes in clinical outcomes over the two-week study period. Methods: Participants with low back pain (N = 110) were randomly assigned to receive a spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), a standard placebo SMT in which participants were aware of a chance of receiving a placebo, an enhanced placebo SMT in which participants were instructed 'the manual therapy technique you will receive has been shown to significantly reduce low back pain in some people,' or no treatment...

A comparative study of amyloid properties of the aggregates of smooth muscle titin (SMT) from chicken gizzard was carried out. These aggregates were formed in two solutions: 0.15 M glycine-KOH, pH 7.2-7.4 (SMT(Gly)) and 0.2 M KCl, 10 mM imidazole, pH 7.0 (SMT(KCl)). Electron microscopy data showed that SMT aggregates has an amorphous structure in both cases. The results of atomic-force microscopy demonstrated slight differences in morphology in two types of aggregates. The SMT(Gly) aggregates were represented as branching chains, composed of spherical aggregates approximately 300-500 nm in diameter and up to 35 nm in height...

Solid sampling and analysis methods, such as laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), are challenged by matrix effects and calibration difficulties. Matrix-matched standards for external calibration are seldom available and it is difficult to distribute spikes evenly into a solid matrix as internal standards. While isotopic ratios of the same element can be measured to high precision, matrix-dependent effects in the sampling and analysis process frustrate accurate quantification and elemental ratio determinations...

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) of knee is a common joint disease. It is associated with reduced knee joint stability due to impaired quadriceps strength, pain, and an altered joint structure. There is altered muscle activation in knee OA patients, which interferes with normal load distribution around the knee and facilitates disease progression. AIM: Our primary aim was to determine activation patterns of the muscles i.e., quadriceps and hamstrings in knee OA patients during walking...
