Background/Aims: Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) has been used to diagnose gastrointestinal submucosal tumors (SMTs). Although rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) has been reported to improve the diagnostic accuracy of EUS-FNA for pancreatic lesions, on-site cytopathologists are not routinely available. Given this background, the usefulness of ROSE by endosonographers themselves for pancreatic tumors has also been reported. However, ROSE by endosonographers for diagnosis of SMT has not been reported...

Vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films with controlled thicknesses are deposited on c-cut sapphire substrates with Al-doped ZnO (AZO) buffer layers by pulsed laser deposition. The surface roughness of AZO buffer layers is varied by controlling oxygen pressure during growth. The strain in the VO2 lattice is found to be dependent on the VO2 thickness and the VO2/AZO interface roughness. The semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT) properties of VO2 thin films are characterized and the transition temperature (Tc) is successfully tuned by the VO2 thickness as well as the VO2/AZO interface roughness...

In the last decade, single molecule tracking (SMT) techniques have emerged as a versatile tool for molecular cell biology research. This approach allows researchers to monitor the real-time behavior of individual molecules in living cells with nanometer and millisecond resolution. As a result, it is possible to visualize biological processes as they occur at a molecular level in real time. Here we describe a method for the real-time visualization of SH2 domain membrane recruitment from the cytoplasm to epidermal growth factor (EGF) induced phosphotyrosine sites on the EGF receptor...

Three μ4-O bridged Dy4 squares, {[Dy4(μ4-O)(HL(1))4(H2O)4]2(NO3)3(OH)}·2H2O·2CH3OH (1), [Dy4(μ4-O)(HL(2))4(SCN)2]·2H2O·4CH3OH (2) and [Dy4(μ4-O)(H2L(3))2(SCN)2]·6H2O (3) were assembled by using a Schiff base ligand and its dimerized and reduced congener, respectively. These complexes share a similar μ4-O bridged Dy4 core, while, both the coordination geometry and metal-ligand interactions are slightly changed upon the modulation of the ligands, resulting in distinct single-molecular magnetic (SMM) and single-molecular toroic (SMT) properties...

AIM: To assess the safety and feasibility of laparoscopic and endoscopic co-operative surgery (LECS) for early non-ampullary duodenal tumors. METHODS: Twelve patients with a non-ampullary duodenal tumor underwent LECS at our hospital. One patient had two mucosal lesions in the duodenum. The indication for this procedure was the presence of duodenal tumors with a low risk for lymph node metastasis. In particular, the tumors included small (less than 10 mm) submucosal tumors (SMT) and epithelial mucosal tumors, such as mucosal cancers or large mucosal adenomas with malignant suspicion...

Epitaxial VO2/TiO2 thin film heterostructures were grown on (100) (m-cut) Al2O3 substrates via pulsed laser deposition. We have demonstrated the ability to reduce the semiconductor-metal transition (SMT) temperature of VO2 to ∼44 °C while retaining a 4 order of magnitude SMT using the TiO2 buffer layer. A combination of electrical transport and X-ray diffraction reciprocal space mapping studies help examine the specific strain states of VO2/TiO2/Al2O3 heterostructures as a function of TiO2 film growth temperatures...

A coupled electrochemical process and biological treatment was used to remove a biorecalcitrant antibiotic: sulfamethazine (SMT). The pre-treatment was performed in a home-made flow cell involving graphite felt as a working electrode at potentials of 1 and 1.6 V/SCE; it was followed by a biological process involving activated sludge purchased from a local wastewater treatment plant. Activated sludge cultures of pretreated and non-pretreated sulfamethazine solution were carried out for 3 weeks, and different parameters were monitored, especially TOC and SMT concentration...

Sorption mechanisms of an antibiotic sulfamethazine (SMT) to humin (HM) isolated from a peat soil and its subfractions after sequential treatments were examined. The treatments of HM included removal of ash, O-alkyl carbon, lipid, and lignin components. The HF/HCl de-ashing treatment removed a large amount of minerals (mainly silicates), releasing a fraction of hydrophobic carbon sorption domains that previously were blocked, increasing the sorption of SMT by 33.3%. The de-O-alkyl carbon treatment through acid hydrolysis greatly reduced polarity of HM samples, thus weakening the interaction between sorbents with water at the interfaces via H-bonding, leaving more effective sorption sites...

A new class of steroidal therapeutics based on phylogenetic-guided design of covalent inhibitors that target parasite-specific enzymes of ergosterol biosynthesis is shown to prevent growth of the protozoan-Trypanosoma brucei, responsible for sleeping sickness. In the presence of approximately 15±5μM 26,27-dehydrolanosterol, T. brucei procyclic or blood stream form growth is inhibited by 50%. This compound is actively converted by the parasite to an acceptable substrate of sterol C24-methyl transferase (SMT) that upon position-specific side chain methylation at C26 inactivates the enzyme...

Understanding the properties of solvent-swollen block copolymer (BCP) microdomains is important for better solvent-based control of microdomain morphology, orientation, and permeability. In this study, single-molecule tracking (SMT) was explored to assess the permeability and transverse width of individual cylindrical microdomains in solvent-swollen polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) films. PS-b-PEO films comprising shear-elongated cylindrical PEO microdomains were prepared by sandwiching its benzene or tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution between two glass substrates...

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation is the only curative option for patients with decompensated cirrhosis; however, many patients die while awaiting transplantation. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) has shown promising results in improving outcomes in patients with advanced liver disease. We evaluated the efficacy of GCSF in patients with decompensated cirrhosis in an open-labeled randomized-controlled trial. METHODS: Consecutive patients with decompensated cirrhosis were randomized to receive either GCSF 300 μg twice daily for 5 days plus standard medical therapy (SMT) (GCSF+SMT group) or SMT alone (SMT alone group)...

Typically, balance training has been used as an intervention paradigm either as static or as reactive balance training. Possible differences in functional outcomes between the two modalities have not been profoundly studied. The objective of the study was to investigate the specificity of neuromuscular adaptations in response to two balance intervention modalities within test and intervention paradigms containing characteristics of both profiles: classical sensorimotor training (SMT) referring to a static ledger pivoting around the ankle joint vs...

Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) creates health benefits for some while for others, no benefit or even adverse events. Understanding these differential responses is important to optimize patient care and safety. Toward this, characterizing how loads created by SMT relate to those created by typical motions is fundamental. Using robotic testing, it is now possible to make these comparisons to determine if SMT generates unique loading scenarios. In 12 porcine cadavers, SMT and passive motions were applied to the L3/L4 segment and the resulting kinematics tracked...

Instruction and Objectives. Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) alleviates sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and it may improve cardiac function in SDB patients. Because large randomized controlled trials directly evaluating the impact of NPPV on cardiac function are lacking, we conducted a meta-analysis of published data on effectiveness of NPPV in improving cardiac function in patients with chronic heart failure regardless of SDB presence. Methods. Controlled trials were identified in PubMed, OVID, and EMBASE databases...

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) has been attributed with substantial non-specific effects. Accurate assessment of the non-specific effects of SMT relies on high-quality studies with low risk of bias that compare with appropriate placebos. PURPOSE: This review aims to characterize the types and qualities of placebo control procedures used in controlled trials of manually applied, lumbar and pelvic (LP)-SMT, and to evaluate the assessment of subject blinding and expectations...

As a strongly correlated metal oxide, VO2 inspires several highly technological applications. The challenging reliable wafer-scale synthesis of high quality polycrystalline VO2 coatings is demonstrated on 4" Si taking advantage of the oxidative sintering of chemically vapor deposited VO2 films. This approach results in films with a semiconductor-metal transition (SMT) quality approaching that of the epitaxial counterpart. SMT occurs with an abrupt electrical resistivity change exceeding three orders of magnitude with a narrow hysteresis width...

In this paper, Fe3O4-Mn3O4/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) hybrid was synthesized through polyol process and impregnation method and used as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) in aqueous solution. The hybrid catalyst had higher catalytic efficiency compared with Fe3O4-Mn3O4 and Mn3O4 as catalyst for degradation of SMT. The effects of pH value, H2O2 concentration, catalyst dosage, initial SMT concentration and temperature on SMT degradation were investigated. The removal efficiency of SMT was about 98% at following optimal conditions: pH=3, T=35°C, Fe3O4/Mn3O4-RGO composites=0...

A 78-year-old woman who had recurrent right lower abdominal pain for about 1 year underwent computed tomography (CT) because of a follow-up observation 1 year after right breast cancer surgery. CT revealed a tumor in the colon. The patient was referred to our hospital for detailed examinations. An abdominal CT showed a low-density tumor of approximately 30 mm in the ascending colon, and the CT density inside the tumor was same as that of fatty tissues. A subsequent colonoscopy showed a submucosal tumor (SMT) in the proximal ascending colon developing from the terminal ileum...
