Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in its modern design was first introduced over 25 years ago and approved by the American FDA over ten years ago. This type of prosthesis allows treatment of glenohumeral joint disease among patients with severe rotator cuff deficiency once thought to be inoperable. Modifications to the prosthesis design, along with improved surgical technique, led to better clinical outcomes and lower complication rates, which subsequently led to an increase in the usage of this implant device...

The aim of our study was to evaluate an original surgical technique for the treatment of fifth metacarpal neck fractures: elastic retrograde intramedullary percutaneous pinning (ERIPP). From January 2014 to January 2016, patients with a fifth metacarpal neck fracture with greater than 30° volar displacement and/or clinodactyly were included. All patients underwent an ERIPP procedure. With this technique, K-wires are used as joysticks to assist reduction when the Jahss maneuver is insufficient. Clinical evaluation incorporated the DASH score, range of motion and grip strength at 3months...

Osteochondral allografts are used to treat many different conditions as acute traumatic large-sized lesions, degenerative osteoarthritis, osteochondritis dissecans, avascular necrosis or in case of failure of previous procedures particularly in young patients for whom primary prosthesis is not desirable. Fresh allografts present the advantage of having mature viable hyaline cartilage, not causing donor morbidity, allowing the restoration of even large defects in a single surgical session. Conversely, they could account for risks of disease transmission, immunologic reactions, and for limited availability...

Malunion after forearm fractures are described to appear in 2% to 10% of cases. Reconstructive surgeries ensure adequate anatomical repositioning. Their importance derives from the fact that malunion can often lead to severe pain as well as deformities causing loss of function and aesthetic issues not only in the forearm, but also the wrist and elbow joint. In this paper a clinical case will be presented using a Patient Specific Instrument (PSI) as navigational aid for reconstructive surgery after malunion of a proximal ulnar fracture combined with allograft surgery of the radial head and radial condyle due to chronic traumatic radial head luxation (Monteggia fracture)...

A skeleton with a number of abnormalities is described involving full discussion of alternative diagnoses. In this complex case, the primary diagnosis is of avulsion of the stem of the bifurcate ligament causing a fracture of the anterior process of the calcaneus. The bilateral fracture identified in Skeleton 3A-7 from Site 12, a Capsian site in Algeria, is a result of the feet being inverted and plantar flexed: the fracture is prone to non-union, which is asymmetrical here. There is also a separate anatomical variation of the feet, 3rd cuneiform and 3rd metatarsal coalition, which was not the cause of trauma...

Versatile superstructures composed of nanoparticles have recently been prepared using various disassembly methods. However, little information is known on how the structural disassembly influences the catalytic performance of the materials. Here we show how the disassembly of an ordered porous La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 perovskite array, to give hexapod mesostructured nanoparticles, exposes a new crystal facet which is more active for catalytic methane combustion. On fragmenting three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) structures in a controlled manner, via a process that has been likened to retrosynthesis, hexapod-shaped building blocks can be harvested which possess a mesostructured architecture...

Because of the complex fracture morphology and vulnerable soft tissue coverage, fractures of the tibial pilon are difficult to treat. Complications are more common than in bi- or trimalleolar fractures. The surgeon has to know about the special risks of these injuries to avoid complications. Early complications are soft tissue necrosis, persisting fragment dislocations after surgery, loss of reposition and deep wound infection. The surgeon has to be aware of early signs of compartment-syndrome and chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS)...

Evaluating the risk of falling of a geriatric rheumatic patient plays an essential role not only in planning and carrying out the physiotherapeutic process. The consequences of falls may be different and, although they do not always result in serious repercussions such as fractures or injuries, it is sufficient that they generate the fear of falling and cause a significant reduction in physical activity. Assessing functional capacity to define the risk of falling is of utmost importance in the case of patients after joint arthroplasty surgeries...
