OBJECTIVE: To identify the indications for physiotherapy and to evaluate physiotherapy practices in patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU (on mechanical ventilation) or to the ward (spontaneously breathing). METHODS: An online, 50-item survey was completed by physiotherapists who had been treating hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Brazil. RESULTS: Of the 644 physiotherapists who initiated the survey, 488 (76%) completed it. The main reasons for indications for physiotherapy in both settings reported as "very frequently" and "frequently" both in the ICU and the ward by most respondents were oxygenation improvement (> 95%) and prevention of general complications (> 83%)...

BACKGROUND: Over 1.4 million US adults identify as transgender when gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth [1]. Although transgender patients face adverse health outcomes, they remain an understudied population [2]. A 2017 study surveyed 411 practicing clinicians and found that 80% had been involved in treating a transgender patient, but 80.6% had never received training on transgender care [3]. The purpose of this report is to describe prolonged desaturation in one case of a transgender patient who wore a chest binder intraoperatively owing to a lack of preoperative recognition...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review the practice of utilizing lateral stress radiographs (LSRs) to identify occult instability (≥ 10 mm of dynamic displacement on LSRs) of minimally displaced lateral compression type 1 (LC1) pelvic ring injuries and to evaluate for associations between instability and patient demographics, injury characteristics, and hospital course. METHODS: A retrospective review of a prospective registry from 2018 to 2022 identified 151 patients with LC1 injuries...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the patient/injury characteristics and associated hospital course of patients sustaining traumatic pelvic ring injuries after alpine ski and snowboard accidents at a level one trauma center in the Rocky Mountain region. METHODS: Patient/injury characteristics were obtained from patients presenting with pelvic ring injuries after alpine ski (n = 55) and snowboard (n = 9) accidents. Characteristics and outcomes analyzed included mechanism of injury, pelvic ring classification (Young-Burgess and Tile), hospital admission, physical therapy (PT) clearance, ambulation, length of stay, inpatient morphine milligram equivalents (MME), and discharges to rehabilitation facility...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are around 1.7 million beds in certified nursing homes across the United States and approximately 1.3 million residents in long-term and end-of-life care. There could be several factors causing a delayed recovery in such patients, such as decreased ambulation, multiple comorbidities, and polypharmacy. An 83-year-old Caucasian woman sustained a fall resulting in compression fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine. She had multiple comorbidities, including anemia of chronic disease, malnutrition, and a significant weight loss of 30 lbs over the four months prior to hospitalization...

INTRODUCTION: Bone loss is a major issue in patients affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare musculoskeletal disorder, particularly in those treated with glucocorticoids (GCs). We aimed to assess the effectiveness of neridronate in terms of bone mineral density (BMD) changes in this population. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients affected by DMD receiving GCs referred to our outpatient from 2015 to 2020. All patients were treated with an intramuscular (IM) injection of neridronate (25 mg every month)...

Contemporary management of iatrogenic pseudoaneurysms is mostly performed using non-surgical techniques. Herein, we present a rare case of deep femoral artery (DFA) pseudoaneurysm with compression neuropathy, which required open repair. A 67-year-old female patient presented with increasing pain in the right groin, sensory neuropathy of the anteromedial thigh and upper leg, and quadriceps paralysis 4 days after coronary angiography via femoral puncture. Computed tomography angiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm of the DFA...

OBJECTIVES: Inguinal lymph node (ILN) staging and therapeutic procedures are important for the diagnosis and management of suspected Inguinal lymph node metastasis in the setting of penile cancer. Morbidity associated with inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND) and the lack of standardization in its perioperative management are both significant. In this study, we aimed to define current management approaches and potential opportunities for improving outcomes. Knowledge of the prognosis of acute spinal cord injury is critical to provide appropriate information for clients and make the best treatment choices. Acute intervertebral disc extrusions (IVDE) are a common cause of pain and paralysis in dogs with several types of IVDE occurring. Important prognostic considerations are recovery of ambulation, return of urinary and fecal continence, resolution of pain and, on the negative side, development of progressive myelomalacia. Initial injury severity affects prognosis as does type of IVDE, particularly when considering recovery of continence...

INTRODUCTION: The impact of neurological deficits plays a role of inestimable importance in patients with a neoplastic disease. The role of surgery for the management of symptomatic spinal cord compression (SSCC) cannot be overemphasized, as surgery represents often the first and paramount step in patients presenting with motor deficits. The traditional paradigm of simple bilateral laminectomy for the treatment of spinal cord compression has been reviewed. The need to achieve a proper circumferential decompression of the spinal sac has been progressively highlighted in combination with the development of the more comprehensive and multidisciplinary concept of separation surgery...

PURPOSE: Metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC) is a devastating complication of advanced malignancy, which can result in neurologic complications and significant deterioration in overall function and quality of life. Most patients are not candidates for optimal surgical decompression and as a result, receive urgent 3D conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) to prevent or attempt to reverse neurologic progression. Multiple trials indicate that response and ambulatory rates after 3DCRT are inferior to surgery...
