BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to investigate the cumulative incidence and risk factors of postoperative inguinal hernia (PIH) in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy, i.e., laparoscopic prostatectomy (LRP) and robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RARP). METHODS: This study included 1124 patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy or transurethral resection of bladder tumor from 2011-2016. We compared the cumulative incidence of PIH in the radical prostatectomy groups (460; LRP 341, RARP 119) and the control group (664; transurethral resection of bladder tumor), and we then analyzed the risk factors (age, operative methods, previous abdominal operative history, thickness and width of external oblique muscle and rectus muscle, thickness of abdominal subcutaneous fat layer at Hesselbach's triangle level, body mass index, prostate-specific antigen, operative time, specimen weight, Gleason score, and pathology T-stage) of PIH in the radical prostatectomy groups...

The interaction of pyridoxal isonicotinoyl hydrazone (PIH) and salicylaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone (SIH), two important biologically active chelators, with iron has been investigated by spectrophotometric methods. High iron(III) affinity constants were determined for PIH, logβ2=37.0 and SIH, logβ2=37.6. The associated redox potentials of the iron complexes were determined using cyclic voltammetry at pH7.4 as +130mV (vs normal hydrogen electrode, NHE) for PIH and +136mV(vs NHE) for SIH. These redox potentials are much higher than those corresponding to iron chelators in clinical use, namely deferiprone, -620mV; desferasirox, -600mV and desferrioxamine, -468mV...

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a reactive hypermelanosis that develops following cutaneous inflammation. Common causes of PIH include intrinsic skin conditions (e.g., acne and eczema) as well as external insults to the skin, such as burn injuries and dermatologic procedures. PIH more commonly occurs in individuals with darker skin, for whom it is often a source of significant psychological distress. Several therapeutic modalities are available for the treatment of PIH, including topical agents, chemical peels, and energy-based devices...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Studies have shown that a change in endothelin receptor expression in the artery is related to pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). However, the mechanism underlying this change remains unclear. METHODS: To test whether the distribution of endothelin receptor type-A (ETAR) and type-B (ETBR) plays an important role in PIH, a reduction of uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) rat model was used to mimic some of the features of PIH; the resulting variable endothelin receptor expression was investigated in the media and intima of the aorta...

Introduction: Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) is a versatile peeling agent for treatment of melasma. However, Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is reported to be the most common side-effect associated with TCA peel. Topical Ascorbic Acid (AA) due to its effect as antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor helps to prevent PIH and maintains the response. Aim: To assess the clinical efficacy, safety and reduction in Melasma Quality of Life (MELASQOL) on combining 20% TCA peel with 5% ascorbic acid cream in epidermal melasma...

The picosecond lasers have shown to effectively treat tattoo pigments that are intractable to previous multiple Q-switched (QS) laser treatments. Therefore we hypothesized that a picosecond laser would show better efficacy with minimal adverse events in the treatment of melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) that are difficult to treat with conventional QS lasers. Two patients with melasma and one patient with PIH were treated with a Picosecond 755-nm Alexandrite Laser (Cyanosure, USA). All patients were Korean with skin type IV and no longer responding to QS laser treatments...

During the last decade, multiple animal models have been developed to mimic hallmarks of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) diseases, which include gestational hypertension, preeclampsia (PE), or eclampsia. Converging in vitro, ex vivo, and clinical studies from our group strongly suggested the potential involvement of the new angiogenic factor EG-VEGF (endocrine gland-derived-VEGF) in the development of PIH. Here, we described the protocol that served to demonstrate that maintenance of EG-VEGF production over 11...

Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) remains the main cause of maternal and fatal mortality. Insulin resistance (IR) and autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance are two principal drivers of PIH development. Few previous researches investigated the association between IR and ANS imbalance in Chinese PIH patients. 120 pregnant women were enrolled in our study, sixty healthy pregnant women (control group), fourty one gestational hypertension (GH group) and nineteen preeclampsia patients (PE group). The homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) and markers of ANS (plasma biomarkers and heart rate variability (HRV) components) were collected...

Previous studies provided a strong evidence of the association between environmental exposure to cadmium (Cd) and hypertension in the general population. However, the role of Cd in pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) remains unclear. A total of 5429 pregnant women was selected from a birth cohort in Wuhan, China to investigate the association between Cd exposure and risk of PIH. Among them, 199 (3.7%) women were diagnosed with PIH. The Cd concentrations in maternal urine collected at delivery were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry...
