BACKGROUND: Phyllodes tumor is a rare breast mass. Most phyllodes tumors are benign, but occasionally some show malignancy. Even if the tumors are benign, they can easily show recurrence. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 48-year-old Asian woman, who had previously undergone a tumorectomy of her left breast 12 years before, with a pathological diagnosis of fibroadenoma. Five years after the initial tumorectomy, the patient presented with an abnormally enlarged left breast...

Intraparenchymal leiomyoma of the breast are among benign non-epithelial tumors with the lowest incidence. Although it displays a benign histology, it may be confused with malignant lesions and create diagnostic confusion. In this paper, we report a 44-year-old woman with a painless mass with a diameter of 1.5 cm in the upper medial quadrant of her right breast. The lesion was removed surgically. The lesion's histologic examination and immunohistochemical analysis revealed a smooth muscle tumor of the breast...

PURPOSE: T helper cells play essential roles in anti-tumor immune response. However, the postoperative changes of peripheral T cell subsets and their clinical significance in breast cancer patients remain largely unknown. METHODS: We evaluated the perioperative changes of T lymphocyte subsets in invasive breast cancer (IBC) patients and breast fibroadenoma (BF) patients preoperatively (preop) and 6, 24, 72 hours postoperatively (POH6, POH24, and POH72). Proportions of CD3, CD4, CD8, T helper (Th) 1, Th2, Th17 cells, regulatory T cells (Treg), and CD4(+)/CD8(+), Th1/Th2 ratio were detected by flow cytometry...

Purpose: Our study investigated whether any sonographic findings could be useful for differentiating between small triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and fibroadenoma. Methods: This retrospective study was approved by our Institutional Review Board, which waived the requirement for patient consent. From January 2009 to December 2010, the sonographic features of 181 pathologically proven TNBC tumors and 172 fibroadenomas measuring less than or equal to 2 cm in the longest dimension were reviewed and analyzed according to the fifth edition of the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) lexicon...

Chest wall hemangiomas are rare tumors that may originate within the soft tissue or from the ribs. Intramuscular hemangioma is infrequent, representing less than 1 % of all hemangiomas, and the localization in the chest wall is even less frequent. They are typically cutaneous in location, large, and poorly circumscribed and can be locally destructive. We present a case of a 34-year-old lady presented with firm lump 3 × 3 cm in left upper and inner quadrant of left breast well defined borders, non-pulsatile and restricted mobility...

Many investigators have examined the functions of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in cancer biology and its anti-neoplastic features in cancer models. The goal of this research is to assess the association of the immunohistochemical expression of AMPK in human mammary tumours with the clinical data of breast cancer patients. 449 cases of previously diagnosed breast cancer, and 27 tissue samples of fibroadenomas and normal breast were utilized for detection of AMPK expression using tissue microarrays and immunohistochemistry...

Mammary-like glands are a normal anatomical component of the anogenital region. The tumors occurring in them morphologically mimic the similar diseases of the breast. The paper presents a case of vulvar fibroadenoma with leaf-like outgrowths and apocrine metaplasia in a 38-year-old female patient. It describes the clinical and morphological characteristics of fibroadenomas and benign phyllodes tumors in the anogenital region.

Pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia (PASH) is a breast stromal change, histologically characterized by anastomosing, slit-like spaces lined by slender myofibroblasts and surrounded by dense collagenous stroma. Mass forming cases clinically and radiologically simulate fibroadenoma. A middle aged women presented with unpalpable breast nodule discovered on ultrasound examination. The ultrasound characteristics were typical for fibroadenoma, while fine-needle aspiration cytology was inconclusive. The histological examination of the lumpectomy specimen showed fibroadenoma with peculiar stromal alteration consistent with pseudoangiomatous stromal hyperplasia...

Fibroadenomas are benign lesions of breast commonly found in young age group. These focal tumours contain both mesenchymal and glandular tissue. Giant juvenile fibroma of breast is rare variant of fibroadenoma found usually in less than 20 years of age. They present with rapid enlargement of single or multiple, discrete, painless large nodule of breast. A 14-years-old premenarche girl presented with large bilateral breast lumps for two months. FNAC showed features of juvenile fibroadenoma. Breast conserving surgical excision of lumps was performed and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of juvenile fibroadenoma...

AIMS: To validate the Singapore nomogram for outcome prediction in breast phyllodes tumours in a large cohort of Singaporean patients, as previous validation studies were conducted on small numbers of patients. We also investigate the association of fibroadenomas and phyllodes tumours within a subset of our cohort. METHODS: Histological parameters, surgical margin status and clinical follow-up data of 259 women diagnosed with phyllodes tumours were analysed. Patients with concurrent malignant or premalignant disease were excluded from the validation to minimise confounding influences...

Extramedullary lymphoma infiltration of the breast by lymphoblastic lymphoma is very rare and most cases are of B-cell lineage; T-cell neoplasms represent less than 10% of all breast lymphomas. Here, we report one patient with lymphoblastic lymphoma and one patient with leukemia, who have similar lesions in breasts with different ultrasound elastography findings. Ultrasound-guided tru-cut biopsies were performed and the first lesion was confirmed as lymphoma infiltration and the second as fibroadenoma. In cases of breast mass presence in patients with a history of hematologic malignancies such as lymphoma or leukemia, breast infiltration should be kept in mind...

Fibroepithelial lesions of the breast comprise a morphologically and biologically heterogeneous group of biphasic tumors with epithelial and stromal components that demonstrate widely variable clinical behavior. Fibroadenomas are common benign tumors with a number of histologic variants, most of which pose no diagnostic challenge. Cellular and juvenile fibroadenomas can have overlapping features with phyllodes tumors and should be recognized. Phyllodes tumors constitute a spectrum of lesions with varying clinical behavior and are graded as benign, borderline or malignant based on a set of histologic features according to recommendations by the World Health Organization (WHO)...

Isolated amyloidomas derived from insulin are extremely rare, and there is only one reported case to date of insulin-derived amyloidoma in the breast. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman reporting a lump in the right breast. It was clinically assessed as a probable fibroadenoma but was removed surgically given the size of the lesion. On histological analysis, the lesion had features consistent with amyloid. Further investigations showed the amyloid to be derived from insulin. The lump was removed in its entirety, and the patient made a full recovery...

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate miR-126-3p expression in stroma and tumor cells of basal-like breast cancer tissues, in an effort to elucidate the potential effect of miR-126-3p on tumor microenvironment and progress of basal-like breast cancer. METHODS: Expression levels of miR-126-3p in 33 paired basal-like breast cancer tissues were assayed by real-time quantitative PCR. Tumor cells and normal epithelial cell were isolated from ten paired basal-like breast cancer tissues and matched adjacent tissues, separately, using laser capture microdissect(LCM)-based PCR method...

OBJECTIVE: The differential diagnosis of fibroadenoma (FA) and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) has been problematic in fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAC) because it has been difficult to differentiate between the "large epithelial clusters" associated with FA and those associated with DCIS. The purpose of this study was to prospectively validate the usefulness of immunocytochemical staining using cocktail antibody targeting p63/CK14 in the differential diagnosis of FA and DCIS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients diagnosed as having an uncertain malignant potential (indeterminate) for breast cancer on the basis of a FNAC finding were selected randomly: ten patients with FA and ten with DCIS...

Biological tissue has a complex structure and exhibits rich spectroscopic behavior. There has been no tissue model until now that has been able to account for the observed spectroscopy of tissue light scattering and its anisotropy. Here we present, for the first time, a plum pudding random medium (PPRM) model for biological tissue which succinctly describes tissue as a superposition of distinctive scattering structures (plum) embedded inside a fractal continuous medium of background refractive index fluctuation (pudding)...

Phyllodes tumour of the breast, earlier called cystosarcomaphyllodes, is a rare fibroepithelial breast neoplasm that occurs in all age groups from adolescents to elderly. Phyllodes tumour occurring during pregnancy and associated with lactating breast is extremely rare. Giant phyllodes tumours or giant fibroadenomas are those measuring more than 10 cms in diameter and weighing more than 500 gm. Phyllodes tumour typically exhibits an exclusive intracanalicular growth pattern of fibroepithelial cells with classical, deep leaf-like stromal projections into dilated lumens from which its name "phyllodes" is derived...

Pleomorphic adenoma is a common tumor encountered in major salivary gland and very rarely seen in breast. This matrix producing tumor can be confused with fibroadenoma, phyllodes tumor and metaplastic carcinoma on fine needle aspiration cytology(FNAC). Pre-operative diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma helps in preventing surgical over or under treatment of the disease. We present an extremely rare case of pleomorphic adenoma of breast diagnosed on FNAC with histopathological confirmation.
