Purtscher retinopathy (PR) is an occlusive vasculopathy of the retinal microvasculature that classically presents 24-48 hours after compressive chest trauma. Symptoms vary from mild to severe acute visual loss. Characteristic findings on fundus examination such as Purtscher flecken, cotton wool spots, and retinal hemorrhages may also be found. Here, we discuss a case of Purtscher retinopathy due to compressive chest trauma.

Each process step in the manufacture of biological products requires expensive resources and reduces total process productivity. Since downstream processing of biologicals is the main cost driver, process intensification is a persistent topic during the entire product life cycle. We present here one approach for the intensification of bioprocesses by applying on-column virus inactivation using solvent/detergent (S/D) treatment during ion-exchange chromatography. The established purification process of a recombinant protein was used as a model to compare key process parameters (i...

Isolable singlet carbenes are among the most important tools in chemistry, but generally require the interaction of two substituents with the electron deficient carbon atom. We herein report a synthetic approach to monosubstituted phosphinocarbenes via deprotonation of hitherto unknown diprotic terminal methylene phosphonium ions. Two methylene phosphonium salts bearing bulky N -heterocyclic imine substituents at the phosphorus atom were isolated and fully characterized. Deprotonation studies indicate the formation of transient monosubstituted carbenes that undergo intermolecular cycloadditions or intramolecular Buchner ring expansion to afford a cycloheptatriene derivative...

PURPOSE: Purtscher-like retinopathy is a rare and vision-threatening eye disease, which is usually associated with acute pancreatitis, autoimmune diseases, and renal failure. We here reported a case of Purtscher-like retinopathy after dupilumab treatment in atopic dermatitis. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old woman with a history of severe atopic dermatitis developed ocular manifestations after second exposure to dupilumab. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was count fingers at 2 feet in the right eye and 20/133 in the left eye when she referred to our hospital...

The objective of this research is to identify and systematize the medical conditions generated by SARS-CoV-2 on the optic nerve and retina of young, adult, and elderly adults who suffered from COVID-19 in the period 2019-2022. A theoretical documentary review (TDR) was conducted within the framework of an investigation to determine the current state of knowledge of the subject under study. The TDR includes the analysis of publications in the scientific databases PubMed/Medline, Ebsco, Scielo and Google. A total of 167 articles were found, of which 56 were studied in depth, and these evidence the impact of COVID-19 infection on the retina and optic nerve of infected patients, both during the acute phase and in subsequent recovery...

In recent years, research focused on synthesis, characterization, and application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted increased interest, from both an experimental as well as a theoretical perspective. Self-consistent charge density functional tight binding (SCC DFTB) in conjunction with a suitable constrained molecular dynamics (MD) simulation protocol provides a versatile and flexible platform for the study of pristine MOFs as well as guest@MOF systems. Although being a semi-empirical quantum mechanical method, SCC DFTB inherently accounts for polarization and many-body contributions, which may become a limiting factor in purely force field-based simulation studies...

BACKGROUND: We report the first case of Purtscher-like retinopathy in a patient with 17q12 deletion-associated maturity-onset diabetes of the young. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old diabetic Hispanic male with history of cataracts and toe amputations presented with sudden onset of painless bilateral vision loss for 1 week with no associated trauma. Visual acuity was counting fingers at six feet in both eyes. Dilated retinal examination revealed bilateral peripapillary cotton wool spots and intraretinal hemorrhages, and significant subretinal and intraretinal fluid on optical coherence tomography...

Purtscher's retinopathy is a rare angiopathy reported in patients with a history of severe trauma and other systemic diseases. The diagnosis is made on clinical grounds, and the severity varies. A 41-year-old gentleman with underlying poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia was referred to the ophthalmology department for diabetic retinopathy screening. He denied visual complaints. Ocular examination revealed a negative relative afferent pupillary defect with a visual acuity of 6/6 bilaterally...

Purpose: To describe a case of presumed Purtscher-like retinopathy in association with 2 chemotherapies. Methods : A retrospective chart review was performed. Results : A 40-year-old Black woman was diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma with metastasis to the liver. Cotton-wool spots and microaneurysms (dot/blot hemorrhages) were found on a routine examination 1 month after the patient started gemcitabine/paclitaxel. An increase in cotton-wool spots was noticed after she stopped gemcitabine/cisplatin therapy and started 5-fluorouracil/irinotecan/leucovorin therapy...

BACKGROUND: Purtscher retinopathy is a rare occlusive microangiopathy comprising a constellation of retinal signs including cotton wool spots, retinal hemorrhages and Purtscher flecken. While classical Purtscher must be antedated by a traumatic incident, Purtscher-like retinopathy is used to refer to the same clinical syndrome in the absence of trauma. Various non-traumatic conditions have been associated with Purtscher-like retinopathy e.g. acute pancreatitis, preeclampsia, parturition, renal failure and multiple connective tissue disorders...

Purtscher-like retinopathy (PuR) is a rare retinal angiopathy associated with a non-traumatic etiology. Both FBA and PuR can cause profound visual impairments. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 10-year-old male who presented with sudden bilateral painless visual loss due to FBA with concurrent PuR, with notable viral prodrome 1 month prior to presentation...

Purtscher-like retinopathy (PLR) is an uncommon occlusive microangiopathy associated with various systemic conditions. We report a case of PLR related to severe progressive systemic sclerosis (SSc), an autoimmune disease characterized by widespread angiopathy and fibrosis, in a 44-year-old Caucasian male diagnosed with early diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dSSc). Upon ophthalmological examination, pathognomonic fundoscopy abnormalities were found. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), angio-OCT, and visual field results are documented at initial diagnosis and follow-up visits...

Purtscher-like retinopathy, an occlusive microvasculopathy, is a rare and severe ophthalmic complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) characterized by a sudden loss of vision with retinal whitening, cotton wool spots and minimal intraretinal hemorrhage. Recovery in visual acuity is usually poor even with prompt treatment. This case showed a patient with SLE concurrent Purtscher-like retinopathy treated with rituximab and interleukin-2 (IL-2) with good prognosis. A 16-year-old female with a 2-year history of SLE was admitted because of unrelieved disease activity of SLE when treated with a high dose of corticosteroids and immunosuppressants and she further suffered from reduced visual acuity in both eyes...
