INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to identify whether the incorporation of a combined Patient as teacher (PAT) and arts-based reflection (ABR) program during a surgical clerkship rotation could influence more humanistic perceptions of surgeons, using an innovative evaluation approach. METHODS: A novel, single question evaluation tool was created. Third year medical-students were asked to "list the top 5 attributes of a surgeon, in order of perceived importance" both before and after their surgical clerkship rotations and participation in the PAT/ABR program...

INTRODUCTION: Distress is part of the experiences and care for people with chronic low back pain. However, distress is often pathologised and individualised; it is seen as a problem within the individual in pain and something to be downplayed, avoided, or fixed. To that end, we situate distress as a normal everyday relational experience circulating, affecting, moving in, through, and across bodies. Challenging practices that may amplify distress, we draw on the theorisation of affect as a relational assemblage to analyse physiotherapy clinical encounters in the care of people with chronic low back pain...

INTRODUCTION: Rare diseases are chronic conditions, generally incurable, progressive and disabling, which may result in early death. Access to therapeutic products, both medicines and appropriate medical devices, is essential to prevent the progression of the disease and maintain the patients' quality of life. Pharmacists can be part of health teams, in charge of guiding patients' journey, monitoring pharmacotherapy and identifying risks. This scoping review aims to identify and summarise evidence on the role of pharmacists and its impact in the field of rare diseases...

BACKGROUND: Neuroscientific approaches have historically triggered changes in the conception of creativity and artistic experience, which can be revealed by noting the intersection of these fields of study in terms of variables such as global trends, methodologies, objects of study, or application of new technologies; however, these neuroscientific approaches are still often considered as disciplines detached from the arts and humanities. In this light, the question arises as to what evidence the history of neurotechnologies provides at the intersection of creativity and aesthetic experience...

BACKGROUND: Humanistic care has become an essential quality for modern nurses. However, previous studies have revealed that nursing students lack adequate preparation to meet the needs of patients in intensive care units using a humanistic care approach. OBJECTIVES: To develop a humanistic care digital storytelling programme for intensive care nursing students and assess its acceptance and satisfaction among participants through a satisfaction survey. METHODS: The development of the programme was based on the SHARE framework (S: sense patient's needs; H: help patient out; A: acknowledge patient's feelings; R: respect patient's dignity and privacy; E: explain what is happening) and involved three steps...

BACKGROUND: The elderly admitted to nursing homes have especially suffered the havoc of the COVID-19 pandemic since most of them are not prepared to face such health problems. METHODS: An innovative coordinated on-site medicalization program (MP) in response to a sizeable COVID-19 outbreak in three consecutive waves was deployed, sharing coordination and resources among primary care, the referral hospital, and the eleven residences. The objectives were providing the best possible medical care to residents in their environment, avoiding dehumanization and loneliness of hospital admission, and reducing the saturation of hospitals and the risk of spreading the infection...

Health care should address the holistic gap between health outcomes, spirituality, religion, and humanistic care to optimize patient care. Treating the whole person encompasses both physical and metaphysical elements. Patients want health care professionals to recognize their spiritual and religious preferences, because these matter in their approach to illness, coping, and long-term outcomes.

PURPOSE: Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is a lethal disease that imposes a major burden on patients and healthcare systems. Three structured literature reviews (treatment guidelines, treatment landscape, and human/clinical/patient burden) and one systematic literature review (economic burden) were conducted to better understand the disease burden and unmet needs for patients with late-stage mCRPC, for whom optimal treatment options are unclear. METHODS: Embase® , MEDLINE® , MEDLINE® In-Process, the CENTRAL database (structured and systematic reviews), and the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination database (systematic review only) were searched for English-language records from 2009 to 2021 to identify mCRPC treatment guidelines and studies related to the treatment landscape and the humanistic/economic burden of mCRPC in adult men (aged ≥18 years) of any ethnicity...

Given that many competing theoretical perspectives are effective, I was curious about change processes that are common and unique to each...

BACKGROUND: Exposure to rape, sexual assault and sexual abuse has lifelong impacts for mental health and well-being. Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) are among the most common interventions offered to survivors to alleviate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other psychological impacts. Beyond such trauma-focused cognitive and behavioural approaches, there is a range of low-intensity interventions along with new and emerging non-exposure based approaches (trauma-sensitive yoga, Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memories and Lifespan Integration)...

BACKGROUND: Medication-free treatment within mental health care aims to offer therapeutic support as an alternative to psychotropic medication. Introducing milieu therapy for severely mentally ill persons in a medication-free unit requires significant changes to the traditional medication-based psychiatric setting. The present study examines how milieu therapists experience working with medication-free treatment for people with severe mental health challenges. The research question was "What may be required to succeed with medication-free treatment in milieu therapeutic settings?" METHODS: A qualitative study with four focus groups were conducted with 23 milieu therapists from three inpatient units in two mental health institutions...

The medical humanities, an umbrella term for the fields of ethics, social science, and fine arts, are increasingly recognized as an important component of medical education. Since the Flexner report, the primacy of science and evidence-based medicine has replaced subjectivity and nuance. While this has been critical for standardization of care and patient safety, an exclusive emphasis on science in undergraduate medical education can devalue more humanistic pursuits. Modern medicine is now plagued with burnout, pandemics, and societal ills that permeate into medicine...

(1) Background: Physical literacy is increasing in popularity across the world as a concept central to the promotion of lifelong engagement in physical activity across a multitude of sectors. The education sector has embraced physical literacy as a concept worthy of focus. Physical literacy literature is bold in its claim that physical literacy should be the foundation of physical education. The objective of this paper was to understand the value of physical literacy as the goal of physical education through the lens of the capability approach; (2) Positioning: This research adopted a post-qualitative sensibility whereby knowledge is decentered, favoring the inseparability of ethics, ontology, and knowledge (ethico-onto-epistemology); (3) Discussion: Throughout the discussion, traditional humanist examples are extended to include post-humanism perspectives to offer a more holistic and ecological appreciation of the relationship between capabilities, physical literacy, and physical education, using the ten capabilities of life, bodily health, bodily integrity, senses, imagination and thought, emotions, practical reason, affiliation, other species, play, and control over one's environment; (4) Conclusions: The paper concludes with the recommendation that the capabilities approach offers a valuable framework for the continued justification of physical-literacy-enriched physical education, which, when aligned, can help to shape the opportunities provided for children and young people in support of their holistic development and lifelong engagement in physical activity...

Traditional health sciences (including nursing) paradigms, conceptual models, and theories have relied heavily upon notions of the 'person' or 'patient' that are deeply rooted in humanistic principles. Our intention here, as a collective academic assemblage, is to question taken-for-granted definitions and assumptions of the 'person' from a critical posthumanist perspective. To do so, the cinematic works of filmmaker David Cronenberg offer a radical perspective to revisit our understanding of the 'person' in nursing and beyond...
