Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers and has the highest mortality rate worldwide. It is worthwhile to explore the mechanism of gastric cancer progression. An increasing number of studies have found that non-coding RNAs including miRNA and lncRNA play important roles in gastric cancer progression. This review summarized the role of ectopic miRNA in gastric cancer proliferation, growth, migration, invasion and apoptosis. Meantime, aberrantly expressed miRNA also received a great deal of attention as potential biomarker for gastric cancer diagnosis and therapy...

INTRODUCTION: Enterovesical fistulas usually result from diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, or colorectal cancer. A perforated Meckel's diverticulum can exceptionally result in an vesico-diverticulum fistula, as noted in only seven previously reported cases. CASE REPORT: A 35-year old Arabic male, quadriplegic, who presented epigastralgia evolving for a week, associated with abdominal distension and cloudy urine. On examination he was feverish (38.5°C), dehydrated with tenderness in the entire distended abdomen; rectal examination revealed a hypotonic sphincter with no other abnormality...

We report a patient with diffuse peritonitis due to perforation of Meckel's diverticulum. This patient was referred to the operating room and underwent bowel resection segment encompassing the area of the diverticulum and terminoterminal primary enteroanastomosis on two levels with good evolution. The diverticulum complications are often related to the presence of ectopic mucosa, specially the gastric and pancreatic type. Since preoperative diagnosis is difficult and infrequent, in most cases this anomaly is confirmed only during surgery...

Previous studies have identified the odd-skipped related 2 (Osr2) transcription factor as a key intrinsic regulator of palatal shelf growth and morphogenesis. However, little is known about the molecular program acting downstream of Osr2 in the regulation of palatogenesis. In this study, we isolated palatal mesenchyme cells from embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5) and E13.5 Osr2(RFP/+) and Osr2(RFP/-) mutant mouse embryos and performed whole transcriptome RNA sequencing analyses. Differential expression analysis of the RNA sequencing datasets revealed that expression of 70 genes was upregulated and expression of 61 genes was downregulated by >1...

Increasing evidence has demonstrated that miRNAs play a critical role in tumor development and progression. Previous studies have revealed that miR-106a is abnormally expressed in various cancers. However, its function and underlying mechanism in cervical cancer (CC) remains unknown. In this study, we confirmed that the expression of miR-106a was significantly upregulated in both CC cell lines and tissues by qRT-PCR. The increased expression of miR-106a was obviously associated with adverse prognostic features...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a vital role in tumour biological and pathologic processes. In the present study, we aimed to detect the expression and biological role of miR-216b in glioma. Our data showed that miR-216b was significantly downregulated in human glioma tissues and cells. Ectopic expression of miR-216b inhibited the proliferation and invasion of U87 and U251 cells and suppressed the growth of xenograft tumours in vivo. Bioinformatic and luciferase reporter analyses identified Forkhead box protein M1 (FoxM1) as a direct target of miR-216b...

The association of TRIM29 overexpression with cancer progression and poor clinical prognosis has been reported in the context of several types of cancers. In the present study, we investigated the prognostic relevance of TRIM29 and its involvement in the progression of human osteosarcoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate a major role of TRIM29 in osteosarcoma. Our results showed that the expression of TRIM29 in osteosarcoma tissues was much higher than that in normal bone tissues...

Accumulating evidence has revealed that aberrantly expressed long non-coding transcripts are involved in the development and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC). Small nucleolar RNA host gene 3 (SNHG3) is a newly identified lncRNA, and little is known about its clinical significance and biological functions in the development of CRC. In the present study, we found that the expression of SNHG3 was significantly upregulated in CRC, and upregulation of SNHG3 predicted poor prognosis for patients with CRC as determined through analysis of the data obtained from TCGA database...

Acquisition of resistance to paclitaxel is one of the most important problems in treatment of breast cancer patients, but the molecular mechanisms underlying sensitivity to paclitaxel remains elusive. Emerging evidence has demonstrated that microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in regulation of cell growth, migration and invasion through inhibiting the expression of its target genes. In our previous studies, we have shown that microRNA-335 (miR‑335) decreased obviously between paclitaxel-resistant (PR) and parental breast cancer cells through miRNA microarray...

AIM: Presence of fatty pancreas increases the risk of metabolic co-morbidities. Detection and quantification of pancreatic fat is not a routine clinical practice, at least in part because of need to use expensive imaging techniques. We aimed to systematically review common markers of pancreatic fat in blood and to investigate differences in these markers associated with fatty pancreas. METHODS: The search was conducted in three databases (EMBASE, Scopus, and MEDLINE)...

Advanced hysteroscopic surgery (AHS) is a vitally important technique in the armamentarium for the management of many day-to-day clinical problems, such as menorrhagia, surgical excision of uterine myomata and septa in the management of female infertility, hysteroscopic excision of chronically retained products of conception (placenta accreta), and surgical removal of intramural ectopic pregnancy. In today's climate of accountability, it is necessary that gynecologists take a more active role in assuring the quality of their work...

BACKGROUND: Choriocarcinoma of the ovary is rare. This tumor can arise from gestational tissue or pure germ cells of the ovary, the former results in gestational choriocarcinoma. The clinical characteristics and histology of both tumor types are identical, differentiation of these tumors is necessary for effective treatment. One strategy for the differentiation of these tumors types is to identify the presence of paternal DNA by DNA polymorphic analysis. CASE PRESENTATION: In the present case, a 27-year-old patient with a history of amenorrhea, lower abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding received a laparoscopic dissection of cystic mass of the right ovary according to an initial diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy...

Mutations in the X-linked gene Protocadherin-19 (Pcdh19) cause female-limited epilepsy and mental retardation in humans. Although Pcdh19 is known to be a homophilic cell-cell adhesion molecule, how its mutations bring about female-specific disorders remains elusive. Here, we report the effects of Pcdh19 knockout in mice on their development and behavior. Pcdh19 was expressed in various brain regions including the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Although Pcdh19-positive cells were evenly distributed in layer V of wild-type cortices, their distribution became a mosaic in Pcdh19 heterozygous female cortices...
