Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), derived from multidetector row CT (MDCT), has a high spatial resolution and has recently been applied to various organs. One of the severe limitations common to CBCT and MDCT is metal artifacts. In particular, streak metal artifacts (SMAs) between multiple metal materials often hinder diagnosis. However, no studies have quantitatively compared the strength of SMAs in MDCT and CBCT. Nomura et al. reported an evaluation method specialized in SMAs of CBCT using the Gumbel distribution (GD), which can also be applied to SMAs of MDCT (Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol 131: 494-502, 2021, https://doi...

PURPOSE: Recurrence is a known complication to inguinal herniotomy with an incidence of 10 to 15 percent (Hernia Surge Group in Hernia 22:165, 2018). Previous studies have shown that direct hernia or large defects are risk factors for postoperative seroma formation (Morito et al. in Surg Endosc https://doi.org/10.1007/s00464-021-08814-2 , 2021). These types of defects are often closed during open herniotomy (Rosenberg et al. in Dan Med Bull 58: C4243, 2011). This is not routine during laparoscopic surgery...

BACKGROUND: CMS Hospital Quality Star ratings reflect the quality of care given to patients. It is hypothesized that increased Star-rating is associated with higher cost and that the value proposition is diminished. METHODS: This study used the Florida AHCA inpatient dataset, CY2019. Partial colectomy was selected as a representative inpatient surgical procedure. Analysis was performed on this data to compare high and low Star-rated hospitals. RESULTS: Total costs were equivalent among all Star levels on initial analysis...

The majority of long coronavirus disease (COVID) symptoms are not specific to COVID-19 and could be explained by other conditions. The present study aimed to explore whether Danish individuals with a perception that they suffer from long COVID have antibodies against the nucleocapsid antigen, as a proxy for detecting previous infection. The study was conducted in February and March 2021, right after the second surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark. All members of the social media group on Facebook "Covidramte med senfølger" ("long COVID sufferers'') above the age of 17 years and living in Denmark were invited to participate in a short electronic questionnaire about long COVID risk factors and symptoms...

This systematic review evaluates the role of methotrexate (MTX) as an adjunctive intravitreal agent for the prevention and treatment of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Articles investigating the use of MTX in ≥5 patients with PVR or high risk of PVR were identified via searches of OVID MED-LINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. Eight studies and 240 eyes were included. Patients received an average 2.2 MTX injections with doses ranging from 250 to 400 µg. After 10 months of follow-up in the three controlled trials, there was an 80% retinal re-attachment rate and 0...

The predictive properties of four definitions of a frailty risk score (FRS) constructed using combinations of nursing flowsheet data, laboratory tests, and ICD-10 codes were examined for time to first intensive care unit (ICU) transfer in medical-surgical inpatients ≥50 years of age. Cox regression modeled time to first ICU transfer and Schemper-Henderson explained variance summarized predictive accuracy of FRS combinations. Modeling by age group and controlling for sex, all FRS measures significantly predicted time to first ICU transfer...

Although the practice of using rapid-acting subcutaneous insulin for the management of mild-to-moderate diabetic ketoacidosis is becoming increasingly popular, the continuous insulin infusion remains widely utilized, and its real-world applicability and safety on a medical surgical unit (Med Surg) and observation level of care are unclear. We assessed whether a continuous insulin infusion protocol for mild-to-moderate diabetic ketoacidosis on Med Surg/observation level of care over a 6.5-year period was associated with adverse outcomes...

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo syndrome is a transient stunned myocardium that typically involves the apical and mid-ventricular segments. A variant, called Inverted Takotsubo, concerns the basal and mid-ventricular segments. CASE SUMMARY: We present a ruptured ectopic pregnancy that was responsible for a catecholamine surge, which led to this stress-induced cardiomyopathy. Transthoracic echocardiography showed mid-basal segments akinesia and hypercontractility of the apical segments...

Multiple case reports and case series report a surge in opportunistic infections like aspergillosis, mucormycosis, and reactivation of cytomegalovirus infection in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) patients. To determine the efficacy of modern survival analysis methods for predicting sepsis onset in ICU, emergency, medical/surgical, and TCU departments. We performed a retrospective analysis on ICU, med/surg, ED, and TCU cases from multiple Mercy Health hospitals from August 2018 to March 2020. Patients in these departments were monitored by the Mercy Virtual vSepsis team and sepsis cases were determined and documented in the Mercy EHR via a rule-based engine utilizing clinical data. We used survival-based modeling methods to predict sepsis onset in these cases...

This study assesses a plausible correlation between a dust intrusion episode and a daily increase in COVID-19 cases. A surge in COVID-19 cases was observed a few days after a Middle East Dust (MED) event that peaked on 25th April 2020 in southwest Iran. To investigate potential causal factors for the spike in number of cases, cross-correlations between daily combined aerosol optical depths (AODs) and confirmed cases were computed for Khuzestan, Iran. Additionally, atmospheric stability data time series were assessed by covering before, during, and after dust intrusion, producing four statistically clustered distinct city groups...
