In 2022/2023, Europe experienced its third consecutive season of high-pathogenicity avian influenza. During this period, the Czech Republic was again severely affected. For the first time, the number of culled birds approached one million, which was three times higher than in previous seasons. In parallel to the outbreaks in poultry, mass die-offs of gulls were also observed. In the present study, we performed whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of 137 H5N1 strains collected in the Czech Republic in 2022/2023 (94...

This study evaluates the accuracy of a newly developed intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation method that applies four different IOL power calculation formulas according to 768 biometric subgroups based on keratometry, anterior chamber depth, and axial length. This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in at Korea University Ansan Hospital. A total of 1600 eyes from 1600 patients who underwent phacoemulsification and a ZCB00 IOL in-the-bag implantation were divided into two datasets: a reference dataset (1200 eyes) and a validation dataset (400 eyes)...

The stereoselective reduction of the steroidal 4-ene-3-ketone moiety (enone) affords the 5β-steroid backbone that is a key structural element of biologically important neuroactive steroids. Neurosteroids have been currently studied as novel and potent central nervous system drug-like compounds for the treatment of, e.g., postpartum depression. As a green methodology, we studied the palladium-catalyzed hydrogenation of steroidal 4-ene-3-ketones in the presence of ionic liquids derived from natural carboxylic acids...

The immune system is integral to cardiovascular health and disease. Targeting inflammation ameliorates adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Atherosclerosis, a major underlying cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD), is conceptualised as a lipid-driven inflammation where macrophages play a non-redundant role. However, evidence emerging so far from single cell atlases suggests a dichotomy between lipid associated and inflammatory macrophage states. Here, we present an inclusive reference atlas of human intraplaque immune cell communities...

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is a slow progressive autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. This condition tends to manifest during adulthood, often around 35 years of age. While LADA can initially be managed by oral medications, eventually the patient will require insulin. We report a case of a 34-year-old woman who was initially treated for type 2 diabetes mellitus but was later diagnosed with LADA.

Nerve injuries pose a drastic threat to nerve mobility and sensitivity and lead to permanent dysfunction due to low regenerative capacity of mature neurons. The electrical stimuli that can be provided by electroactive materials are some of the most effective tools for the formation of soft tissues, including nerves. Electric output can provide a distinctly favorable bioelectrical microenvironment, which is especially relevant for the nervous system. Piezoelectric biomaterials have attracted attention in the field of neural tissue engineering owing to their biocompatibility and ability to generate piezoelectric surface charges...

The coordination chemistry of 2-pyridyl ketoximes continues to attract the interest of many inorganic chemistry groups around the world for a variety of reasons. Cadmium(II) complexes of such ligands have provided models of solvent extraction of this toxic metal ion from aqueous environments using 2-pyridyl ketoxime extractants. Di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime (dpkoxH) is a unique member of this family of ligands because its substituent on the oxime carbon bears another potential donor site, i.e., a second 2-pyridyl group...

Peripheral nerve injury poses a threat to the mobility and sensitivity of a nerve, thereby leading to permanent function loss due to the low regenerative capacity of mature neurons. To date, the most widely clinically applied approach to bridging nerve injuries is autologous nerve grafting, which faces challenges such as donor site morbidity, donor shortages, and the necessity of a second surgery. An effective therapeutic strategy is urgently needed worldwide to overcome the current limitations. Herein, a magnetic nerve guidance conduit (NGC) based on biocompatible biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and 8 wt % of magnetite nanoparticles modified by citric acid (Fe3 O4 -CA) was fabricated by electrospinning...

Copper(II) complexes with an α-diimine show a wide variety of biological activities, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant and anticancer. Crystal structure analysis shows that the formulas of the compounds are [Cu(bipy)(L)(BF4 )] (1) and [Cu(phen)(L)(H2 O)](BF4 )·H2 O (2), with BF4 - as a ligand in complex 1, which is rarely coordinated to metals...
