Characterizing the nano-bio interface has been a long-standing endeavor in the quest for novel biosensors, biophotovoltaics, and biocompatible electronic devices. In this context, the present computational work on the interaction of two peptides, A6K (Ac-AAAAAAK-NH2) and A7 (Ac-AAAAAAA-NH2) with semiconducting TiO2 nanoparticles is an effort to understand the peptide-metal oxide nanointerface. These investigations were spurred by recent experimental observations that nanostructured semiconducting metal oxides templated with A6K peptides not only stabilize large proteins like photosystem-I (PS-I) but also exhibit enhanced charge-transfer characteristics...

Community-acquired meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is becoming an important public-health problem. This study attempted to investigate S. aureus and MRSA colonization in nasal swabs obtained from 843 patients without a history of hospitalization at the time of hospital admission and from 72 health-care workers chosen for comparison. Of the patients, S. aureus was detected in 218/843 (25.9%) and MRSA in 17/843 (2.0%). Of the health-care workers, S. aureus was detected in 15/72 (20.8%) and MRSA in 10/72 (13...

Regions flanking the translation initiation site (TIS) are thought to play a crucial role in translation efficiency of mRNAs, but their exact sequence and evolution in eukaryotes are still a matter of debate. We investigated the context sequences in 20 nucleotides around the TIS in multi-cellular eukaryotes, with a focus on two model plants and a comparison to human. We identified consensus sequences aaaaaaa(A/G)(A/C)aAUGGcgaataata and ggcggc(g/c)(A/G)(A/C)(G/C)AUGGCggcggcgg for Arabidopsis thaliana and Oryza sativa, respectively...

Carnitine octanoyltransferase (COT) produces three different transcripts in rat through cis- and trans-splicing reactions, which may lead to the synthesis of two proteins. Generation of the three COT transcripts in rat does not depend on sex, development, fat feeding, the inclusion of the peroxisome proliferator diethylhexyl phthalate in the diet or hyperinsulinemia. In addition, trans-splicing was not detected in COT of other mammals, such as human, pig, cow and mouse, or in Cos7 cells from monkey. Rat COT exon 2 contains two purine-rich sequences...

Carnitine octanoyltransferase (COT) produces three different transcripts in rat through cis- and trans-splicing reactions, which can lead to the synthesis of two proteins. The occurrence of the three COT transcripts in rat has been found in all tissues examined and does not depend on sex, fat feeding, peroxisome proliferators or hyperinsulinaemia. Rat COT exon 2 contains a putative exonic splicing enhancer (ESE) sequence. Mutation of this ESE (GAAGAAG) to AAAAAAA decreased trans-splicing in vitro, from which it is deduced that this ESE sequence is partly responsible for the formation of the three transcripts...

Several fowlpox virus (FPV) DNA fragments were selected by differential hybridization using cDNA of transcripts that were strongly transcribed early and/or later after infection of QT-35 cells. The EcoRI L fragment contained three strongly transcribed FPV genes: L1L, a late 1452 bp partial (amino end) ORF; L2R, an early/late 522 bp ORF; and L3R, a late 948 bp ORF. The protein products of L1L, L2R and L3R shared homology with the products of vaccinia virus (VV) genes H4L (RAP94), H5R (Ag35) and H6R (topoisomerase), respectively, suggesting a conservation of gene structure and order between VV and FPV...
