Asparagus racemosus Willd. is widely used to combat various diseases owing to its medicinal properties. In this study, arial parts of A. racemosus were investigated for their total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidative potential. A high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method combined with effect-directed-analysis was also developed to screen the antioxidant effects of A. racemosus and quantify biologically active compounds on chromatograms from A. racemosus. Total phenolics (154 mg gallic acid equivalent/g), flavonoid contents (497 mg quercetin/g) and IC50 (15...

A 'twin-graphene' bilayer-based nanoscale capacitor and nanoscale dielectric capacitor are designed using a density functional theory approach including van der Waals dispersion correction. A strong effect on electronic properties is observed for different stacking modes. The AB stacking mode is the most stable one among the considered stacking modes with a band gap of 0.553 eV. Our predicted energy and charge-storage capacities are higher than those of other nanoscale capacitors designed using other two-dimensional carbon allotropes...

Alcohol (ethanol) has been used in medicine since time immemorial. In ophthalmic practice, besides as an antiseptic, it was given as retrobulbar injections to relieve severe ocular pain. Alcohol can be applied topically to the surface of neoplastic or suspicious lesions to kill cells that might desquamate and seed during surgical excision, to treat epithelial ingrowth that can occur following corneal surgeries, particularly laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and to treat superficial infectious keratitis...

INDICATIONS: The aim of excimer laser-assisted deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (excimer-DALK) is, as in mechanical DALK, the treatment of keratectasia (keratoconus and pellucid marginal degeneration), stromal scars or stromal corneal dystrophy. A prerequisite for surgery is the absence of (pre‑) Descemet's scars and an intact endothelium. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: After excimer laser-assisted trephination to 80% of the corneal thickness at the trephination site, intrastromal air injection (so-called big bubble) and lamellar corneal preparation, a lamellar anterior transplantation of the endothelium-free donor tissue is performed...

METHODS: Experimental study with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and block-face SEM of 18 corneal specimens. Fresh human research donor corneoscleral discs (n = 12) were prepared with liquid-bubble technique or examined as untreated controls (n = 3). In addition, Descemet's membrane samples, n = 3, were obtained in DMEK surgery...

PURPOSE: Aging is the most significant risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders that are typified by cognitive deficits. Our recent work utilizing BubR1 hypomorphic (BubR1H/H) mice, an accelerated aging model, has revealed that genetic inhibition of the endogenous Wnt pathway inhibitor secreted frizzled related protein 3 (sFRP3) plays a neuroprotective role. Neuroinflammation has been suggested as a pathological hallmark of age-related neurodegeneration mediating cognitive impairment...

A 62-year-old female developed pseudophakic bullous keratopathy after cataract surgery and underwent Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK). Intraoperatively, a white opacified pre-Descemet's layer was noticed after scoring and removal of trypan blue stained Descemet's membrane (DM), and endothelium complex. It was removed using internal limiting membrane peeling forceps and sent for histopathological evaluation along with DM-endothelium complex and epithelium. Preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative clinical, tomographical, and histopathological data confirmed thickened PDL or Dua's layer...

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this case report is to describe an occurrence of a rare complication of lead extrusion, which was observed 10 months after spinal cord stimulator (SCS) implantation. METHODS: A patient with low back pain and failed back surgery syndrome underwent implantation of a SCS without complications. Ten months after implantation, one SCS lead extruded from her lower back leading to surgical removal of the leads. RESULTS: After identifying the complication of a SCS lead extruding from the patient's back, a surgical revision was performed to remove the SCS leads but retain the implantable pulse generator (IPG) in the gluteal region...

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cell (MSC) therapy is a promising approach for treatment of as yet incurable detrusor underactivity (DUA), which is characterized by decreased detrusor contraction strength and/or duration, leading to prolonged bladder emptying. In the present study, we demonstrated the therapeutic potential of human embryonic stem cell (ESC)-derived multipotent MSCs (M-MSCs) in a diabetic rat model of DUA. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) (50 mg/kg) into 8-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats...

PURPOSE: To examine the optical coherence tomography (OCT) and histologic features of Descemet membrane detachment (DMD) to ascertain the involvement of the pre-Descemet layer (PDL). DESIGN: Retrospective, observational case series. METHODS: Clinical, histopathologic, and OCT features of a cohort of 41 cases with diagnosis of DMD from 4 centers were studied. Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) is the ideal surgery for corneal stromal diseases with a healthy endothelium. This technique offers substantial advantages compared with penetrating keratoplasty, primarily the avoidance of endothelial rejection and longer graft survival. Several DALK techniques have been described and classified into 2 categories, descemetic DALK (dDALK) and predescemetic DALK (pdDALK) depending on whether Descemet membrane-endothelium was thought to be exposed or minimal residual stroma was left behind...

However, the growth factors crucial for SSC self-renewal and the mechanism underlying this process remain unclear. The most widely used methods for transdermal administration of the drugs are hypodermic needles, topical creams, and transdermal patches. The effect of most of the therapeutic agents is limited due to the stratum corneum layer of the skin, which serves as a barrier for the molecules and thus only a few molecules are able to reach the site of action. A new form of delivery system called the microneedles helps to enhance the delivery of the drug through this route and overcoming the various problems associated with the conventional formulations...

Background: Indirect pulp treatment (IPT) is a minimally invasive procedure based on the application of a protective liner on the affected dentin, thereby preserving the pulp vitality. Aim: This study aims to evaluate and compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of IPT when a layer of calcium hydroxide (Dycal), mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), or Biodentine was placed over the affected dentin in primary molars. Materials and Methods: A clinical trial with sample size of 45 primary molars between the age group of 4-9 years, of which 15 teeth were considered, each for Group I (Dycal), Group II (MTA), and Group III (Biodentine)...

A highly unique imaging sign was indicated, and its pathologic basis was explained, with concurrent review of the literature. METHODS: Case series and review of the literature...
