BACKGROUND: With the exception of osteomas, bone neoplasms that originate in the sinonasal cavity are seldom diagnosed on preoperative imaging due to a lack of characteristic radiographic features. Here we described the unusual occurrence of an osteoblastoma in the paranasal sinuses, and we drew focus to its salient imaging features. A highly unique imaging sign was indicated, and its pathologic basis was explained, with concurrent review of the literature. METHODS: Case series and review of the literature...

The case report incorporates a Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination for demonstration of the existence of pre-Descemet's layer (PDL; Dua's layer) overlying a descemetocele and demonstrates predescemetocele as a separate clinical entity. The prospective analysis was done in two cases that had descemetocele, and OCT demonstrated the presence of PDL over an unruptured descemetocele that offers resilience and can be treated with an elective deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty or a penetrating keratoplasty...

We propose the design of switchable plasmonic nanoantennas (SPNs) that can be employed for optical switching in the near-infrared regime. The proposed SPNs consist of nanoantenna structures made up of a plasmonic metal (gold) such that these nanoantennas are filled with a switchable material (vanadium dioxide). We compare the results of these SPNs with inverted SPN structures that consist of gold nanoantenna structures surrounded by a layer of vanadium dioxide (VO2 ) on their outer surface. These nanoantennas demonstrate switching of electric-field intensity enhancement (EFIE) between two states (On and Off states), which can be induced thermally, optically or electrically...

PurposeTo measure the pressure and volume of air required to create a big bubble (BB) in simulated deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) in donor eyes and ascertain the bursting pressure of the BB.Patients and methodsTwenty-two human sclera-corneal discs were used. Air was injected into the corneal stroma to create a BB and the pressure measured by means of a pressure converter attached to the system via a side port. A special clamp was designed to prevent air leak from the periphery of the discs. The pressure at which air emerged in the corneal tissue; the bursting pressure measured after advancing the needle into the bubble cavity and injecting more air; the volume of air required to create a BB and the volume of the BB were ascertained...

PURPOSE: To examine the movement of air injected in the cornea in simulated deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), from the needle tip to the formation of different types of big bubbles (BB) and to ascertain how air travels through the stroma and pre-Descemet's layer [Dua's layer (PDL)] to create a type-1 (air between PDL and deep stroma) and type-2BB (air between PDL and Descemet's membrane). METHODS: Air was injected in 57 sclerocorneal discs and the passage recorded...

The authors aimed to present a deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) surgery case with mixed type bubble demonstrating Dua's layer (DL). This was a reported case of DALK surgery. The authors encountered cornea DL structure at DALK surgery while cleaning the remaining stromal pieces. We also observed perforation in the central part of DL. However, DALK surgery could be completed. It is possible to encounter DL in a DALK surgery performed with mixed type big-bubble.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Corneal triple procedures consist of combined keratoplasty surgery and cataract surgery. Currently, anterior lamellar keratoplasty, endothelial keratoplasty, and conventional penetrating keratoplasty, are very often simultaneously performed with cataract surgery. The present article reviews the recent advances and current developments in corneal triple procedures. RECENT FINDINGS: Many new findings have been reported. Core vitrectomy before host trephination and retroillumination during continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis has enabled us to perform penetrating keratoplasty triple procedures more safely...

PurposeTo define optical coherence tomography (OCT) characteristics of type-1, type-2, and mixed big bubbles (BB) seen in deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty.MethodsHuman sclero-corneal discs were obtained from UK (30) and Canada (16) eye banks. Air was injected into corneal stroma until a BB formed. UK samples were fixed in formalin before scanning with Fourier-domain (FD-OCT). One pair of each type of BB was scanned fresh. All BB obtained from Canada were scanned fresh with time-domain (TD-OCT). For each OCT machine used, type-1 BB from which Descemets membrane (DM) was partially peeled, were also scanned...

PurposeFibrin glue has been used successfully in numerous ophthalmic surgical procedures. Recently, fibrin glue has been used in limbal stem cell transplantation to reduce both operative time and to negate the need for sutures. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of fibrin glue on epithelial cell migration in vitro.MethodsCorneoscleral rims were split to retain the epithelial layer, Bowman's layer, and anterior stroma. Rims were cut into eight equal-sized pieces and were placed directly on culture plates or affixed with fibrin glue...

BACKGROUND: Tissue-engineered extracellular matrix populated with autologous pluripotent cells can result in de-novo organogenesis, but the technique is complex, not widely available, and has not yet been used to repair large oesophageal defects in human beings. We aimed to use readily available stents and extracellular matrix to regenerate the oesophagus in vivo in a human being to re-establish swallowing function. METHODS: In a patient aged 24 years, we endoscopically placed a readily available, fully covered, self-expanding, metal stent (diameter 18 mm, length 120 mm) to bridge a 5 cm full-thickness oesophageal segment destroyed by a mediastinal abscess and leading to direct communication between the hypopharynx and the mediastinum...

PURPOSE: In big bubble (BB), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty intracorneal injection of air separates Descemet's membrane (DM) and the pre-Descemet's layer (Dua's layer [DL]) to create a type 1 BB. We tested the hypothesis that air injection after excision or ablation of DL will fail to produce a BB. METHODS: Nine human sclero-corneal discs were used. Three served as controls. In three, a type 1 BB was created, the bubble wall was excised and more air injected in an attempt to create another BB...
