REVIEW
Jeremy Howick, Paquita de Zulueta, Muir Gray
Empathic care benefits patients and practitioners, and empathy training for practitioners can enhance empathy. However, practitioners do not operate in a vacuum. For empathy to thrive, healthcare consultations must be situated in a nurturing milieu, guided by empathic, compassionate leaders. Empathy will be suppressed, or even reversed if practitioners are burned out and working in an unpleasant, under-resourced environment with increasingly poorly served and dissatisfied patients. Efforts to enhance empathy must therefore go beyond training practitioners to address system-level factors that foster empathy...

PURPOSE: To determine how much timesaving and reduction of interruptions reading room assistants can provide by taking over non-image interpretation tasks (NITs) from radiology residents during on-call hours. METHODS: Reading room assistants are medical students who were trained to take over NITs from radiology residents (e.g. answering telephone calls, administrative tasks and logistics) to reduce residents' workload during on-call hours. Reading room assistants' and residents' activities were tracked during 6 weekend dayshifts in a tertiary care academic center (with more than 2...

How students experience the learning process is of great importance because it affects the enthusiasm they feel during this process. Although many studies have been conducted on apprehension, anxiety, and burnout in both teachers and students, few focus on the relationship between these three variables. To this end, the three variables in this review study are first defined. Then, the relationship between EFL learners' apprehension and their anxiety and burnout is discussed. It seems that the more apprehensive and anxious one feels, the more likely they feel burned out...

To examine the mediation effect of burnout on the association between workaholism and tobacco and alcohol use. A total of 2199 workers from the French national electricity company fulfilled an online questionnaire. Smoking status, alcohol use disorder based on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption and workaholism based on the Work Addiction Risk Test were used as binary variables. Burnout was assessed as a continuous variable with the Copenhagen Burn-Out Inventory. Mediation analyses tested the direct effect of the associations between workaholism and each substance use, as well as the indirect effect passing through burnout, while adjusting for sociodemographic factors (gender, age, occupational grade and marital life), work stress using the effort-reward imbalance and overcommitment...

The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in non-cirrhotic livers is rising significantly, but clear risk factors for screening remain elusive. This study sought to characterize non-cirrhotic HCC etiologies. HCC cases from 2009 to 2020 in a Dutch referral center were examined, revealing 371 out of 1654 cases (22%) as non-cirrhotic. Notably, the incidence of non-cirrhotic HCC increased by 61% in the time frame between 2009 and 2020. Interestingly 39% of non-cirrhotic HCC cases had cryptogenic origins. Cryptogenic non-cirrhotic HCC exhibited similarities with non-cirrhotic NAFLD HCC, but displayed advanced tumor stages, lower surgical rates, and a more frequent presence of symptoms, which substantiated in poor survival rates...

In an effort to reduce the flammability of synthetic polymeric materials such as cotton fabrics and polyurethane foam (PUF), hybrid nanocoatings are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly. Multilayered nanocomposites of a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), are paired with two kinds of clay nanoplatelets, montmorillonite (MMT) and vermiculite (VMT). The physical properties such as thickness and mass and thermal behaviors in clay-based nanocoatings with and without incorporation of tris buffer are compared to assess the effectiveness of amine salts on flame retardant (FR) performances...

The consequences of persistent stress can impact individuals' physical and psychological well-being and gradually develop into chronic stress. Mental disorders or symptoms of burn-out syndrome can have severe consequences. Mental disorders leading to work incapacity significantly burden the health system. Prevention interventions can protect against burn-out, depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders...

While biomass holds significance as a resource, its abundance in South Korea is limited. Therefore, in this study analyzed the chemical characteristics of agricultural by-products produced and evaluated their fuel potentiality. To achieve this objective, multivariate analysis was utilized to create biomass clusters with diverse feature. All investigated biomass types showed heating values of at least 12.6 MJ/kg, adhering to South Korea's Bio-solid recovered fuel (SRF) standard, once the moisture content was reduced to 20 % or less...
