The question of whether the universe is expanding or contracting serves as a model for current questions facing the medical humanities. The medical humanities might aptly be described as a metamedical multiverse encompassing many separate universes of discourse, the most prominent of which is probably bioethics. In this paper, understood as a contribution to a theoretical pathology, the necessity and urgency of a medical metatheory are explained on the basis of intensive and extensive developments of medical knowledge. These developments have extended beyond the limits of medicine modelled after the experimental and clinical paradigms, making it imperative to include the social and valoric dimensions within medicine and not as an addition to its traditional goals. The metamedicine so created, it is suggested, should develop a dialogic model in which, without having to postulate isomorphisms or correlations, the dilemmas posed by ethos, psyche and soma are confronted as discourses of a human science...

The concept of metamedicine is analogous to the concept of metaphysics. According to Kants perception, medicine has its origin in the human mind ("Gemüt") which is the source of all kinds of arts. Controversally to Kant, Fichte established I and non-I as a subject-object relationship. School philosophy, psychology and biology tend to banish the "subject" into mysticism but it comes up again in modern physics. Medicine as "art of healing" can only happen between subjects (physician and patient). Considering "metamedical" points of view, it cannot exist without the I/you respectively the you/I relationship...
