Microbial conversion of agri-food waste to valuable compounds offers a sustainable route to develop the bioeconomy and contribute to sustainable biorefinery. Clostridium tyrobutyricum displays a series of native traits suitable for high productivity conversion of agri-food waste, which make it a promising host for the production of various compounds, such as the short-chain fatty acids and their derivative esters products. In this study, a butanol synthetic pathway was constructed in C. tyrobutyricum , and then efficient butyl butyrate production through in situ esterification was achieved by the supplementation of lipase into the fermentation...

Bud sport is a common and stable somatic variation in perennial fruit trees, and often leads to significant modification of fruit traits and affects the breeding value. To investigate the impact of bud sport on the main metabolites in the fruit of white-fleshed loquat, we conducted a multi-omics analysis of loquat fruits at different developmental stages of a white-fleshed bud sport mutant of Dongting loquat (TBW) and its wild type (TBY). The findings from the detection of main fruit quality indices and metabolites suggested that bud sport resulted in a reduction in the accumulation of carotenoids, fructose, titratable acid and terpenoids at the mature stage of TBW, while leading to the accumulation of flavonoids, phenolic acids, amino acids and lipids...

OBJECTIVES: During fasting, liver pivotally regulates blood glucose levels through glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. Kidney also produces glucose through gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenic genes are transactivated by fasting, but their expression patterns are chronologically different between the two organs. We find that renal gluconeogenic gene expressions are positively correlated with the blood β-hydroxybutyrate concentration. Thus, we herein aim to investigate the regulatory mechanism and its physiological implications...

In the severe pollution area of nanoplastics (NPs) and cadmium ions (Cd2+ ), the joint effects of their high environmental concentrations on primary producers may differ from those of low environmental doses. Thus, we investigated the physiological changes, cell morphology, molecular dynamic simulation, phenotypic interactions, and metabolomics responses of C. pyrenoidosa to high environmental concentrations of NPs and Cd2+ after 12-d acclimation. After 12-d cultivation, mono-NPs and mono-Cd2+ reduced cell density and triggered antioxidant enzymes, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production, and cell aggregation to defend their unfavorable effects...

PURPOSE: Diarrhea is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. After including sapovirus to the viral gastroenteritis screening of our institution's laboratory, we noticed an increase in sapovirus infections among kidney transplant recipients. Therefore, we assumed former gastrointestinal tract infections with unidentified pathogens could have been caused by sapovirus. To better understand the characteristics of a sapovirus infection in a high-risk group we initiated this study...

BACKGROUND: L-Tryptophan (L-Trp), an essential amino acid, is the only amino acid whose level is regulated specifically by immune signals. Most proportions of Trp are catabolized via the kynurenine (Kyn) pathway (KP) which has evolved to align the food availability and environmental stimulation with the host pathophysiology and behavior. Especially, the KP plays an indispensable role in balancing the immune activation and tolerance in response to pathogens. SCOPE OF REVIEW: In this review, we elucidate the underlying immunological regulatory network of Trp and its KP-dependent catabolites in the pathophysiological conditions by participating in multiple signaling pathways...

Resembling the natural extracellular matrix (ECM), hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dressings have been extensively explored as suitable candidates for burn wound treatment. However, native HA hydrogel's limitations, such as low mechanical strength, rapid degradation, and uncontrollable drug delivery, hinder its efficacy, especially for full-thickness burns requiring injectable hydrogels with robust antibacterial and angiogenic capabilities...

Nutriose is a dextrin-based soluble fiber prepared from starch. Cereals such as maize, wheat, and barley are the primary sources of nutrients for commercial production. Nutriose is resistant to digestion by human enzymes in the stomach and small intestine. It is mostly undamaged when it enters the colon after traveling through the digestive tract, where it generates shortchain fatty acids (SCFAs) as byproducts. These SCFAs, which include butyrate, propionate, and acetate, have a number of health advantages...

BACKGROUND: A balanced intake of protein and constituent amino acids (AAs) requires adjustments to total food intake (protein leverage; PL); and (ii) food selection to balance deficits and excesses (complementary feeding). We provided mice with choices of Casein and Whey, two protein sources that are complementary in AA balance, across a range of protein concentrations (P%) of digestible energy (DE). OBJECTIVES: We determined whether: PL operates similarly for Casein and Whey; one protein source is preferred at control P%; the preference changes as P% falls; and whether AA intakes under control and low P% levels identify AAs that drive changes in protein selection...

In recent years, the fungal disease 'pepper stem rot', contracted from the soil-borne pathogen sclerotium rolfsii, has been increasing year by year, causing significant losses to the pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) industry. To investigate the infection mechanism of stem rot, the fungus S. rolfsii was used to infect the roots of pepper plants, and was found to affect root morphology and reduce root activity, which subsequently inhibited root growth and development. With fungal infestation, its secretions (oxalic acid, PG and PMG enzyme) were able to break normal tissues in the stem base and induced the burst of the active oxygen, which leads to injury aggravation...
